VGC 21 Urshifu-S [QC 2/2] [GP 1/1]

[OVERVIEW]

Urshifu-S is blessed with an amazing combination of STAB moves, a great Attack stat, and a good Speed tier that outspeeds many important Pokemon such as Kyogre, Groudon, and Dialga. Additionally, its Dark typing and access to Sucker Punch allow it to answer Calyrex-S effectively. Unseen Fist makes Urshifu very hard to check defensively by allowing it to hit through Protect, forcing the opponent to deal with it offensively. This allows it to thrive late-game when the opponent has already used up their Dynamax. However, Urshifu-S is held back by its low Special Defense and weaknesses to Flying- and Fairy-type attacks from the likes of Yveltal, Zapdos, and Xerneas. It also suffers from a lack of flexibility, making it quite predictable; notably, it generally does not want to Dynamax, as it loses out on Wicked Blow's critical hits and Close Combat's Base Power.

[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Wicked Blow
move 2: Close Combat
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Detect / Poison Jab
item: Focus Sash / Choice Band / Black Glasses
ability: Unseen Fist
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
* Wicked Blow's ability to bypass screens, Intimidate, and defense boosts from Max Steelspike make Urshifu-S very hard to slow down. It is also a great tool against Pokemon such as Solgaleo and Necrozma-DM.

* Close Combat hits Dark- and Fighting-types such as Incineroar and Hitmontop that resist Wicked Blow.

* Sucker Punch is excellent for removing faster threats, most notably OHKOing even a Dynamaxed Calyrex-S.

* If Choice Band is not being used, Detect is preferred as the last move for protecting Urshifu-S from damage and conserving momentum, and it is run over Protect to bypass Imprison users such as Indeedee-M. With Choice Band, Poison Jab is used in order to deal heavy damage to the aforementioned Fairy-types.

* Focus Sash is the most common item, mitigating Urshifu-S's poor bulk. However, Choice Band is worth considering because it makes Wicked Blow absurdly powerful, having a good chance to OHKO restricted Pokemon like Kyogre and Necrozma-DM. Black Glasses is an option for boosting the power of Wicked Blow without the restrictions of Choice Band.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Iron Head is an option over Poison Jab to have a better Max Move. However, it fails to hit Tapu Fini and, as mentioned above, Urshifu usually does not want to Dynamax anyway. A Choice Scarf allows Urshifu to outspeed faster Pokemon such as Calyrex-S and Choice Scarf Kyogre, but this set is weak and very susceptible to being KOed quickly. U-turn can be used on the Choice Band set for pivoting, but it is generally not worth using over Sucker Punch or Poison Jab.

[OVERVIEW]

Urshifu is blessed with an amazing combination of STAB moves, a great Attack stat, a good speed tier that outspeeds many restricted pokemon (I'm guessing you're looking at the base 90 speed tier, so mention a few of those explicitly). Additionally its , a Dark typing along with access to sucker punch which allows it to check Calyrex-S effectively. along with an amazing signature move and ability which allows it to be a decent offensive threat in the metagame. (Make this line about how Unseen Fist makes it very difficult to check defensively, and therefore most of the time it needs to be overpowered offensively). However, Urshifu is held back by its relative special frailty alongside its weakness to common max moves such as Max Knuckle and Max airstream which makes it susceptible to many faster relevant pokemon that use these moves such as Yveltal, Kartana, Zapdos and Thundurus. On top of this, Urshifu also struggles with certain Fairy-types like Xerneas, Whimsicott and Tapu Fini due to the fact that they resist both of its STAB moves, forcing it to rely on the weaker Poison Jab. low Special Defense and weaknesses to Flying- and Fairy-type attacks from the likes of Yveltal, Zapdos, and Xerneas. (Just keeping this as concise as possible). Add a sentence here about it not having a lot of flexibility, making it some what predictable

move 4: Detect / Poison Jab
item: Focus Sash / Choice Band / Black Glasses

[SET COMMENTS]
* Wicked Blow's is guaranteed to be a critical hit every single time, which means it has an effective base power of 120 along with the (this is stuff we assume the reader will already know or can easily find out on the dex) ability to ignore Reflect, Aurora Veil, Attack drops from bypass screens, Intimidate, or and Max Wyrmwind and Defense boosts from Max Steelspike. (Add a sentence here about Pokemon that you'd really like to hit with wicked blow like Solgaleo)

* Close Combat is Urshifu's strongest Fighting-type move and it synergizes beautifully with wicked blow, hitsting Dark- and Fighting-types that resist it as well as hitting multiple other types for super effective damage such as Incineroar and Hitmontop that would be able to resist Wicked Blow.

* Sucker Punch allows Urshifu to pick off weakened pokemon or pokemon that are weak to it is excellent for removing faster threats, most notably easily OHKOing even a dynamaxed Calyrex-S.

* Poison Jab is used as the last move on the Choice Band set in order to deal heavy damage to the aforementioned Fairy-types. If Choice Band is not being used, detect is preferred for protecting Urshifu from damage and improve positioning.

* Focus Sash is the most common item, mitigating Urshifu's frailty somewhat and allowing it to get off at least two hits most of the time or forcing the opponent to double target into it. poor bulk. However Choice Band is worth considering as Wicked Blow becomes absurdly powerful, often dealing over 50% to even Dynamaxed restricted pokemon such as Kyogre and Necrozma-Dusk-Mane while having a good chance to OHKO them outside of Dynamax. It also allows Urshifu to OHKO most Incineroar with Close Combat even at -1 after Intimidate. This comes at the cost of being unable to switch moves, something that should especially be noted when using Sucker Punch. (Just keep item mentions to one sentence a piece imo) Black Glasses is an option if Focus Sash is already held by another pokemon and you dislike being locked into one move. for boosting Urshifu's Dark-type attacks without the restrictions of Choice Band.

* Unseen Fist is Urshifu's only ability and it allows it to hit through Protect and Detect with all its usually used moves, making Urshifu extremely threatening late game after the opponent's Dynamax has been used as they are stripped of their ability to use protect to play around it. (This is a good point, but I think I'd rather see it in the overview as another positive for Urshifu)

* Urshifu generally does not want to Dynamax as it becomes unable to land critical hits, it loses the boost from Choice Band and Close Combat also becomes weaker. For the very few cases where it is forced to Dynamax, Gigantamax Urshifu is preferred due to its ability to hit through Max Guard and Max Darkness dropping Special Defense usually not being too helpful in comparison. (Another point for the overview, this is good though)

* Maximum Attack and Speed investment fully utilizes Urshifu's offensive capabilities, and a Jolly nature is required to outspeed many relevant base 90-95 Speed pokemon. (This can just be dropped)

Iron head is an option over Poison Jab to have a better max move. However, it fails to hit Tapu Fini and as mentioned above, Urshifu usually does not want to dynamax anyway. Taunt could be used to prevent Trick Room from going up but its generally not worth it due to the other moves being too valuable. (Mention a choice scarf set here instead of Taunt)

There's a lot of highlighted text but this is actually really good work! Since it's a fair bit to implement I would like to make sure it's all done properly before I stamp 1/2. Tag me in the analyses channel in the discord if you need anything.

Do wanna mention, when you're revising look at the spelling and grammar standards. "Pokemon", all attacks, stats, and "Dynamax" are all always capitalized. https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/spelling-and-grammar-standards.3656658/

The only thing of note that I think is worth considering here is an OO mention of U-Turn for the Choice Band variant. Would you mind implementing a one-liner of that and tagging me when done?
