name: Choice Band Trapper
move 1: First Impression
move 2: Superpower
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Feint
item: Choice Band
ability: Arena Trap
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Trapinch is a unique Pokemon in NFE thanks to its ability Arena Trap, which is only shared with Diglett. However, unlike the latter, Trapinch is also blessed with an impressive Attack stat and the most powerful priority move, First Impression. Boosted by a Choice Band, First Impression accomplishes the impressive feat of cleanly OHKOing Eviolite Galarian Linoone after Stealth Rock damage as well as Sneasel and uninvested Eviolite Hattrem with no prior damage. Superpower is the second most useful move on Trapinch, since it deals monstrous damage to Ferroseed and Munchlax, two defensive Pokemon slower than it that it is meant to successfully trap. Earthquake is Trapinch's strongest STAB move, which mainly hits Klang and Mareanie, although Trapinch has to watch out for Scald burns from the latter, as well as for Clefairy to a lesser extent. Feint is a filler move having +2 priority even after the first turn to hit weakened Machoke and Piloswine before they can use Bullet Punch or Ice Shard, respectively, as well as bypass Protect, which is sometimes run on Galarian Linoone. Maximum HP investment allows Trapinch to always survive Eviolite Hattrem's Psychic after Stealth Rock damage, so that Trapinch can be directly sent out on Hattrem and proceed to damage it beyond repair with First Impression. 4 Speed EVs make Trapinch faster than Ferroseed.
Pair Trapinch with Pokemon that appreciate Hattrem and Galarian Linoone being removed from the game. A noteworthy teammate is Galarian Corsola, whose main counterplay happens to be the two former Pokemon: indeed, Galarian Linoone is immune to Night Shade, as well as Will-O-Wisp if it is holding a Toxic Orb, whereas Hattrem blocks Stength Sap and Will-O-Wisp thanks to Magic Bounce. Galarian Corsola also offers a lot of defensive utility to make up for Trapinch's uselessness in this area. More generally, Trapinch is amazing at supporting Pokemon that are annoyed by Hattrem: thus, it fits extremely well on teams using entry hazard setters. Ferroseed, Roselia, and Mareanie are all appealing choices on entry hazard-stacking teams. More offensive options include Gurdurr, which struggles against Hattrem, and Haunter, which is checked by Galarian Linoone. Special attackers as a whole make for great partners due to Trapinch's unmatched ability for removing special walls from the match.
name: Bulky Trapper
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Superpower
move 3: First Impression
move 4: Quick Attack / Crunch
item: Eviolite
ability: Arena Trap
nature: Adamant
evs: 220 HP / 36 Atk / 248 Def / 4 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Trapinch can also forgo its potential for trapping Hattrem to focus instead on reliably trapping Klang and Pawniard. Earthquake is the main trapping option, always 2HKOing specially defensive Klang as well as OHKOing Pawniard after Stealth Rock damage. Superpower is a more reliable choice against bulky Pawniard, Galarian Linoone, and to a lesser extent, Ferroseed. First Impression is harder to use because it misses out on a lot of KOs the Choice Band set achieves. Still, the combination of First Impression and Quick Attack is enough to dispose of weakened Galarian Linoone and Hattrem, especially with Stealth Rock support. Crunch targets Haunter, which is otherwise immune to Trapinch's coverage, lest it try using Trapinch as an easy opportunity to revenge kill after Trapinch has trapped one of its teammates. The defensive investment allows Trapinch to always avoid the 2HKO from +1 Attack defensive Klang and the OHKO from +2 Attack Pawniard after Stealth Rock damage. 4 Speed EVs make Trapinch faster than Ferroseed.
Bulky Trapinch offers great support to Haunter and Hattrem, since both are walled by defensive Klang. Gloom and Galarian Corsola also enjoy Trapinch trapping Pawniard, since Pawniard can turn Strength Sap to its advantage thanks to its ability Defiant. Bulky Trapinch can also easily live a Choice Band-boosted Ice Shard from Sneasel, then proceed to outprioritize and KO it with First Impression. Since Trapinch also beats Galarian Linoone, Pokemon that fear these two Dark-types make for great partners. Thus Haunter, Hattrem, and Galarian Corsola are great picks to form a core with Trapinch. A special mention goes to Rufflet, which can freely spam its STAB moves once Trapinch has KOed the opponent's possible Flying-type resistance in Klang, Pawniard, or Carkol.
