Pokemon Soulsilver wifi battling info?

I'm new to wifi battling and was wondering if I should actually beat the game before I should start wifi battling, but seeing as I only have 8 badges I really don't feel like getting the other 8. I'd rather just assemble a team now and wifi battle. Does everyone else usually beat the game before they start battling? maybe to get access to all the pokemon and hm's they need? Would it be ok for me to start wifi battling now or should I beat the game?

p.s. i'm talking about actual competitive battling

And it shouldn't matter as long as you have a good team. It's all up to you. You can always trade via WiFi for what you need.
