To all those HG/SS players out there: what's your policy on the Pokewalker? Two days ago I would have said 'never', but after losing my entire team to the Kimonos I'm seriously reconsidering that policy. So far I've come up with three possibilities:

1. One Pokemon per route. It must be the first Pokemon you see, so you'd better catch it!
2. One Pokemon for the entire Pokewalker.
3. Don't give up! You don't need some stupid 20 gram hunk of plastic to salvage your dream of becoming a Pokemon master!

What do you guys think? Even if I don't use to catch Pokemon, I'll probably just drop my Dratini in there, since it levels up retardedly slowly.
Well for my first Nuzlocke I gave myself access to the pokewalker. To make it dfficult I made my own rule that I could only get pokemon after the E4 (first time). I also ran with the 1 pokemon per route thing. However I decided that any pokemon I put into the pokewalker would be treated as "dead" for the same reason that Level gaining using DayCaree is not allowed.

As for you I think that its fine if you want to use it (since you are stuck for pokemon). If I was in your position I would use the pokewalker but I would put in a useless pokemon to "die" since level gaining is easy in the pokewalker and I like challenges!

I am literally raging at the Nuzlocke, I've never hated crits so much. Never ever raise a low levelled Magikarp in Nuzlock. It took 6 hours to evolve just for it to die to a crit Spark from a Pachirisu 20 minutes later. With Gyarados I lost Staravia to a Crit from Ponyta, my Golbat from Jupiter's Skuntank's Night Slash which was a crit, who I swear was going to evolve the next level, and a Bibarel, who get surprised raped in Heathrome by Barry.

Well, I restarted my emerald challenge and till now it's going much better than the first. I've just defeated Brawly and I have a good team. Although I missed a very important member due to makuhita's vital throw. Bye Beaky...

I haven't done a nuzlocke of HG/SS but I have thought about the pokewalker rules I might use.

What I concluded was: You may replace a route or city in the game with a pokewalker course, 1st appearance rule applies. However, you may only replace it with a route where you could feasibly catch a Pokemon, e.g. you can replace Goldenrod (where you could get an Eevee or a Machop) but you can not replace Azalea (I don't think you can headbutt things in there anymore).
Also, you may (obviously) not go back to the same Pokewalker course.

Pokewalker seems cheap to me, but I like the idea of replacing a route that the above user posted. I personally won't be using it, but I wouldn't frown on anyone using the method above.

I'm doing Nuzlocke on Leafgreen.

Current Team:

Emerald the Ivysaur - Level 22
Lepidot the Butterfree - Level 13
Pika the Pikachu (I couldn't believe it when I found one in the Viridian Forest) - Level 16
Gold the Shiny Bellsprout - Level 16
Talos the Pidgeotto - Level 19
Granite the Geodude - Level 16

Dead:

Monk the Mankey - Level 9, Died from annoying Wrap/Poison (status)/Bite combo from an Ekans

In Daycare: Riptide the Magikarp - Level 10

I tweaked the Daycare rules a little bit because it is impossible to train a Magikarp with Splash as its only move. And to accomodate the unexpected Shiny Bellsprout into my team.

My second Nuzlocke is being started on Ruby right now.

Team:

Mudddkipzz the Mudkip - Lv. 13
Sweetie the Taillow - Lv. 8
Pokemart the Zigzagoon - Lv. 3
Muffin the Shroomish - Lv. 8
Mr Woof the Poochyena - Lv. 7
Winny the Wingull - Lv. 8

Nothing dead so far, feeling pretty good.

Um... you can Headbutt trees @ Azalea Town since I caught a Heracross there. However I don't think that you can Headbutt in Mahogany Town. Nice rule though

I just whited out in my first Nuzlocke run of Emerald. I went into the first gym with a level 12 Dustox "Gibbs" and level 12 Torchic "Alexi". Needless to say that was a bad move as I got obliterated by Rock Tomb.

I feel like I just lost both of my only children...

Chapter 3: Earth, Air, Water and Flower

I emerged from Oreburgh Tunnel into a hazy sunlight. I coughed a few times. It wasn't haze, it had a taste. It was dusty. I opened my eyes and looked apon a city buried in a valley. Gray stones and mountain peaks surrounded the city. This must be Oreburgh.

I descended down the edge of the mountain into Oreburgh. When I reached the city entrance, a boy immediately approached me and asked me if I was a beginner. Was it that obvious? He asked me if I wanted him to take me to the gym. Of course. I want my first badge. As I followed him to the gym, he told me about the sights of Oreburgh. The gym, a mine, a museum. When we arrived, I found Barry waiting for me. He showed me the Coal badge. If he got it, then I could get it. Excitedly, I tried to rip the door open. It was locked? Huh? What do I have to do. Barry said he wasn't in the gym, and he left after their battle. The boy told me he must be in the mine, and that I should checked. I stared. The mine is open to the public? Is that even safe? I decided I would, so I said goodbye to the two, and they wished me luck.

I was shocked that the mine workers were so lax. They worked while people roamed around inside and battled. It was a pretty small mine though, and it wasn't deep. They extracted coal and fossils. I finally found Roark, the gym leader, at the deepest part. He found some sort of Pokemon fossil. He said he was going to give it to the museum, and that he would be at the gym soon. I left the mine, thinking of who I would use. If Roark is a rock type leader, that leaves Keeter and Farore at a bad disadvantage. Dartz will have to pull through.
I arrived at the gym after healing, and found another huge mountain inside. Roark was at the top. Goddamn. I have a feeling that this is only the first mountain I need to climb on my journey. I beat one trainer with Dartz, and then began to fight the last trainer. Dartz took down Geodude, and then I accidentally switched in Farore. Against an Onix. Farore hit Onix with Wing Attack after Wing Attack, and then Onix struck him. Suddenly, a light burst from Farore, and after it faded, a new Pokemon was flying in its place. No way! I whipped out my Pokedex. Farore became a Staravia.

I finally reached Roark. He smiled, and said I had a fiery spirit. He sent out Geodude. I sent out Dartz. Bubble took it out in one hit. Roark throws out Onix. Bubble takes it down again. He then laughs and sends out his last Pokemon, a Cranidos. The Pokemon that came from the fossil. It struck first with Headbutt. It was fast and a heavy hitter. Dartz used Bubble, but it wasn't enough. Headbutt then made a crit. Dartz was going to go down. Cranidos charged at Dartz again. And then, a burst of light, again. Cranidos stopped in its tracks. Another evolution! Dartz became a Prinplup, and learned Metal Claw. I ordered her to use Metal Claw, and it killed Cranidos. Roark congratulated me, and gave me the Coal badge. He told me that I would become something great.

After healing at the Pokemon Center, I immediately left. Charged with adrenaline, I travelled back to Jubilife. I strolled to the Route 204 exit, but I was stopped. Dawn and Rowan were standing there, with a couple of freaks in tinfoil and neon hats. I ran over, happy to tell them the news. They jumped when I came over. They looked worried. The freaks were threatening Rowan, for something. I demanded a battle, and they both accepted. Dawn asked me if she could join, clearly angry. A double battle? I'll try. We sent out Keeter and Chimchar, and they chose Wurmple and a Zubat. The battle ended fast. Keeter used Astonish, and Chimchar assaulted both of them with Ember. The freaks looked taken back, and ran away. One of them stopped and said they would see me again, and then took off again. I asked Rowan who they were, and what they wanted. All he knew is that they were called Team Galactic. What a weird name. An evil team based on space? I got a chill down my spine. This will not be my last encounter.

After a bit more travelling and killing, I arrived in a new town. I healed up, and frantically looked for a gym. It was a small town, and it turned out there wasn't a gym here. I looked at my map. The next one must be in Eterna City, quite a ways away. For now, I let out Dartz, Farore and Keeter, and we explored the flower meadows around the town. We were playing around, when a little girl ran up to me. Out of breath, I gave her some water. She told me her dad was taken hostage in the Valley Windworks, and she escaped. She told me that a bunch of space pirates took control of it. Team Galactic. I knew it. I needed to get there as fast as possible.

I followed a river to the Windworks. After I saw it in view on a hill, I got attacked by water. A Buizel jumped out of the stream and fired a Water Gun at my Pokemon. I told Dartz to use Bubble to block it. The water exploded. Keeter used Leech Life and Farore used Quick Attack. It was 3 vs. 1, and this Buizel was putting up a fight. I knew then, that I needed this fighter on my team. I threw a Pokeball at it. It burst and Buizel when it in, shaking and blinking. I heldthe ball when it settled and held it skyward. Vexen, the Buizel, was going to help me fight Team Galactic. I stormed up the hill, past the huge wind towers. This isn't going to end well, for them.

To be continued.

Um... you can Headbutt trees @ Azalea Town since I caught a Heracross there. However I don't think that you can Headbutt in Mahogany Town. Nice rule though
Yeah, you can actually Headbutt almost every single tree in Johto. I got a Pineco from Cherrygrove, a Hoothoot from the Safari Zone Gate, a SPearow (I believe) from Violet, and failed to catch an Exeggcute from Azalea. It's the ultimate loophole in the HGSS challenges, really. No location goes to waste.

As for my final say on the Pokewalker, I decided I'd just catch one Pokemon per route. I'm hoping to grab a Magnemite or Murkrow off the Suburban Area route, and if I can grab a Magby from Rugged Road or a Slowpoke from Beautiful Beach that'd be fantastic as well. We'll see.

Sapphire Nuzlocke Run, Part 1: Enter the Challenge

I expectantly started this challenge, naming myself Ruby for the naming traditions of the first two generations, finding a middle-aged man asking for my help. I refuse until he promises me a free Pokemon. When choosing my starter I wavered for a full 15 minutes, judging the pros and cons about each starter. as soon as I realized what I was doing and realized it went against the nature of the challenge I just picked Mudkip because I liked it the most (Aah, nostalgia). I happily named him Kippy and went on my merry way. After defeating May and getting Pokeballs, I set out on Routes 101, 102, and 103 to amplify my team. I ended up with:

Bowie the Zigzagoon
Mutt the Poochyena and
Wyrm the Wurmple.

Since they were all level 2, I went through Route 102, slowly leveling them up until they were all level 6 (and Kippy at 8). After stocking and resting up at the Center and Mart (with severe limitations as to how many items i can buy), I head out towards Route 104, where I catch a Wingull, appropiately named Gaviota (Spanish for seagull). I was thinking about maybe saving it for later if something were to happen to Kippy, but leveled it a bit for the hell of it. And then I run into the Rich Boy.

Wyrm wages a siege on his Zigzagoon (he had a Full Restore) until she destroys in with her HP in the red. Then he sends out the Taillow, which uses Focus Energy as I switch in my Mutt. It manages to get its HP down to the point where my other Pokemon can finish it off. I send in Gaviota, which I had come to appreciate for its early access to Water Gun.

"Taillow used Peck!"
"A critical hit!"
"Gaviota fainted!"

I stand there, staring at the swirly pixels of my LCD screen. Now one of my Pokemon was gone. Forever. I pull myself together. "It's not TOO bad", I think. "It could be worse", and send out Bowie, whom I order to destroy that blasted Taillow.

"Taillow used Peck!"
"A critical hit!"
"Bowie fainted!"

...No. It can't be. I swiftly pull out my calculator. A 1.56% of chance of that happening. Of Bowie dying. She was going to bring me items.I would scratch it between the ears and tell her stories as the sun fell down over the fields. And we would be best pals. But now we couldn't do that anymore, because that fucking Taillow had bent the odds and destroyed my friends. In tears I order Kippy to slay that monster, and he did. Through my tears, I notice Wyrm emitting a strange light. I wipe my face and watch it evolve into a majestic Silcoon. Wyrm has reminded me that there is still hope. My team is still strong. Still grieving, I deposit my fallen comrades in the PC, where they shall lay undisturbed. I stand in front of Petalburg Forest. Until now I had been taking this light-heartedly. But now that's over.

The Challenge has begun.

Kippy the Mudkip, level 9
Wyrm the Silcoon, level 7
Mutt the Poochyena, level 7

Gaviota the Wingull, level 5
Bowie the Zigzagoon, level 5

IN TOMORROW'S EPISODE: WHAT WILL RUBY ENCOUNTER IN PETALBURG WOODS? IN WHAT SHAPE WILL HE ARRIVE TO RUSTBORO CITY? AND CAN HE DEFEAT THE LOCAL GYM LEADER, ROXANNE?

stay tuned to find out

HOW DO PEOPLE KEEP GETTING SHINIES? Q_Q I've played through everything but HG/SS at least twice and I've never encountered a wild shiny... >_>

Quick Update

I make it through the Rocky Mountains with ease and go into Lavender town. I kick Gary's ass for the umteenth time in the tower and head into the grass outside of Lavender. I catch me a Vulpix luckily, since I wanted a fire type, I call her Vixen and train her up on my way to Celadon. I grab my Eevee and immediately evolve him into a Vaporeon (Vaportrail). When Vulpix was around level 25, I take her into Erika's Gym and clean house. She learns Flamethrower right before fighting Erika at level 29, which was incentive enough for me to evolve her into Ninetales. She OHKO'd all of Erika's pokemon, I get my Rainbow Badge and proceed the Casino.

I have enough money to give Vaportrail Ice Beam, so I go ahead and do that. At the same time I teach him Water Pulse since he needed a nice water move to at least pack a bit of punch. Team Rocket wasn't much and Giovanni fell in short time. I am now ready to go back to Lavender with my shiny Silph Scope and go through the tower.

In the midst of all of this, I evolve Mandra into his full adult form.

Team:
Mandra, level 34
~Tackle
~Leech Seed
~Sleep Powder
~Razor Leaf

Is, and will forever be, the leader of the team. He has finally achieved his ultimate form and he seems comfortable in his new body. He's the pokemon that's been with me since the beginning and the one everyone turns to if they have a problem. He loves to helps out the other pokemon on the team, he's even a little playful, which is a farcry from where he started as a Bulbasaur.

Nequam, level 32
~Mirror Move
~Aerial Ace
~Leer
~Fury Attack

Pretty much second in command as she is the second longest (living) member on the team. She's the mother figure no doubt. Very playful and nurturing, quick to defend one of the team members.

Vixen, level 30
~Flamethrower
~Will-o-Wisp
~Confuse Ray
~Quick Attack

New to the team, but instantly made an impact. She's very non-assuming and tends to keep to herself and not really bother any of the other pokemon. She tends to stay close to me, she's been that way since she was a Vulpix.

Vaportrail, level 32
~Water Pulse
~Ice Beam
~Sand-Attack
~Bite

A relaxed ol' boy, very mellow, which is nice amongst some of the other characters on the team. Gets along well with everyone, especially Vixen, they like to lay around and such. Maybe like Mandra, he will open up more as he gets accustomed to everything. Solid member of the team

Doom-Mole, level 30
~Scratch
~Dig
~Magnitude
~Sand-tomb

Doomy has always been a good member of the team. Very reliable. Depending on if I can catch a Rhyhorn in the Safari Zone or not, he may be replaced. But until then, he will stay and wreck havoc on poor souls.

Box: (Relevant)
Seymour (Bellsprout)
Flyboy (Spearow #2)

Sapphire Nuzlocke Run, Part 2: Free Lunch
Part 1
Kippy the Mudkip, level 9
Wyrm the Silcoon, level 7
Mutt the Poochyena, level 7

As soon as I entered Petalburg Woods, I almost stepped on a Shroomish (that could've been icky). Anyways I catched it and named it Wunupp, and noticed it learned Absorb, which could make it a useful Poke. Then I had to save this guy from getting mugged by a weird dude in a pirate outfit. He gave me his thanks for saving highly important documents, WHICH HE WAS CARRYING IN THE WOODS WHILE LOOKING FOR POKEMON, and gave me a Great Ball. How nice, an entire Great Ball just for me. Anyways the exit was a disapointingly short distance away, so I finished the trip to Rustboro with no consequences. Then I used Route 116 to level myself a bit and catch a Pokemon, who turned out to be a Nincada I named Samur. I stored him in the PC, just in case anything happened to Wyrm, who had just evolved into a Beautifly.

Then I just trashed the Gym with Wunupp's absorb and Kippy's Water Gun. Really, no problem at all.

Afterwards I ran into the same dull exec, who managed to get the same documents stolen again from the same guy. Really, his stupidity astounds me. Anyways I had to trek into a small tunnel to get his stuff back from Pirate Dude back (and save some old guy's Wingull). Just before leaving the tunnel, I ran into a small Whismur, whom I decided to catch with Wyrm. The Whismur proceeded to obliterate Wyrm With a critical hit Uproar. Critical hits: Nuzlocke run's worst enemy? Anyways I caught the Whismur and named it Veegee, and had to part with poor, poor Wyrm, whom will never be forgotten. Then I leveled Samur and Veegee a bit, just in case, before I stowed them in the PC.

The old guy didn't give me anything, but he told me if I ever needed a favor I could go to him? See? That's how you reward people, you don't give them Great Balls. Then the guy gave me a Great Ball (SEE WHAT I MEAN) and told me to take his documents to the shipyard in Slateport City. Ugh. I couldn't argue though. Then the President asked me another favor, but at least he gave me this cool PokeNav thingy, so I don't mind. I found out I had to take a boat to Dewford, but Mr. Old Person with Wingull pulled through.

Then I had to go into another cave, in which I needed to use Flash, for which I needed to beat the local Gym, but I just downloaded a map of the cave with my PokeNav and went through it. I caught a Makuhita who I named Sandbag because it looks like it IS a sandbag. It even has a knot on top of his head! Anyways I gave the guy his letter and he gave me a cool TM. I didn't pay attention to him though, I was looking at the TM. It was shiny.

Then I trained up, both in Granite Cave and in the Gym. The team had progressed. Mutt had Bite (though he's not gonna do anything against Brawly), Sandbag got Arm Thrust and Vital Throw, Wunupp got Leech Seed, and most importantly, Kippy evolved into a Marshtomp. We were set. We challenged Brawly.

Sandbag took care of his Machop (albeit with the help of a Super Potion) and survived with 6 HP. Against his Makuhita I used Wunupp to Leech Seed and paralyze him (barely surviving too), and used Kippy to mount the final assault. We won the badge, and now we part to Slateport City...

Kippy Lv 16
Mutt Lv 14
Wunupp Lv 15
Sandbag Lv 15
Samur Lv 8
Veegee Lv 9
Gaviota Lv 4
Bowie Lv 5
Wyrm Lv 10

IN OUR NEXT ISSUE, JOIN RUBY'S TRAVELS TO MAUVILLE CITY AND THE BATTLE FOR THE THIRD BADGE. HOW WILL HE FARE? I HAVE NO IDEA SO FIND OUT TOMORROW.

tldr we're doing good
