Zigzagoon's Beginning

In previous generations Berry Juice was not legal in Little Cup. This meant that in order to abuse Belly Drum and still have health to take a hit afterwards Zigzagoon had to use Oran Berry. This was less than satisfactory though, as it only restored 10 HP, and only when at 25% HP or less, meaning it wasn't activated right after Belly Drum was used and it had to survive a hit first. However, this could be somewhat rectified by Gluttony, which cause the Oran Berry to activate at 50% of its max HP instead, but it still couldn't make up for the fact it only restored 10 HP.

Becoming Little Cup's Speed Demon

At the start of XY, Zigzagoon was cast aside in favor other other sweepers that were easier to set up and had much better Attack to hit with. Zigzagoon wasn't really used, and as long as Meditite was in the tier it never really had a chance to shine. However, once Meditite was banned from Little Cup, Zigzagoon finally received a chance to show what it could do. People began to use it, and while it started out as just hype, people realized that it had good reason to be hyped. It was a monster after setting up Belly Drum, and with STAB Extremespeed few things could revenge kill it.

Playing With Zigzagoon

While it requires team support to set up, if it can do so it is almost unstoppable. Memento gives it a free opportunity to set up with Belly Drum, and Extremespeed allows it to outspeed any threats and KO like Mienfoo or Timburr. Thief is great coverage for the Ghost-types that are immune to Extremespeed, as well as stealing an opponent's item after you have been restored to full health by Berry Juice.

Playing Against Zigzagoon

The best way to stop Zigzagoon is to prevent it from setting up. Keeping momentum as well as knowing which of the opponent's could posisbly have Memento is a big key. You also want to try and keep one Normal-type resist alive so that you can take a hit and KO it back. Sucker Punch doesn't work because it will fail if going second, and usually does sue to Extremespeed being +2 priority, but other priority moves will work. They aren't reliable stops to Zigzagoon though, as Extremespeed outprioritizes with Extremespeed.

Summary

Zigzagoon is one of those starter Normal-types in the first route that nobody thinks is good. However, it actually is quite the direction-impaired monster. Youngster Joey should be using this instead, as Zigzagoon has finally risen to the fame it deserves.
