Gen 1 Hypno (Ubers) [QC 2/2] [GP 1/1]

:gs/hypno:
[OVERVIEW]

Hypno holds a niche in the tier as the fastest viable Pokemon that has access to both a sleep-inducing move and a paralysis-spreading move. This allows Hypno to outspeed and put Exeggutor to sleep with Hypnosis as well as paralyze faster foes such as Tauros, Gengar, and Zapdos and attempt to brute-force them with STAB Psychic. Hypno's biggest strength is its role compression, being a jack-of-all-trades lead that covers many matchups at least neutrally, with Thunder Wave being one of the main reasons to use it over Jynx. Thunder Wave even gives Hypno a slight edge over Exeggutor, which has to use the inaccurate Stun Spore; Submission also gives it a better time against Chansey. Hypno has decent bulk, being able to survive a couple stray hits from foes such as Tauros and Zapdos with relative ease. Hypno's mono-Psychic typing also grants it no common weaknesses, unlike Exeggutor, which has weaknesses to Jynx and Mewtwo's Blizzard and Zapdos' Drill Peck. It also has much better physical bulk than Jynx, which is incredibly physically frail.

While Hypno does fill many roles decently, it fails to do any of these roles particularly well: it's fast enough to outspeed Exeggutor and Lapras but not fast enough to outspeed any other relevant threats, being outsped and completely shut down by Jynx. It's bulky enough to tank a few hits from foes such as Tauros and Zapdos, but it has little staying power due to its lack of recovery. Hypno also has to rely on Hypnosis to put something to sleep, making it somewhat unreliable in getting sleep off. Hypno has heavy competition as a Psychic-type lead, with Exeggutor being the objectively better sleeper, Jynx being faster than it and having STAB Blizzard, and Alakazam and Starmie having Recover. Finally, while Hypno has effectively no weaknesses, it also lacks many of the resistances that Exeggutor has, taking neutral damage from Rhydon's Earthquake, Gengar's Thunderbolt, and Slowbro and Starmie's Surf, making it much worse at switching into those threats.

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========
Psychic is Hypno's main STAB move, notably 2HKOing Gengar while also doing decent damage to other common leads such as Tauros and Zapdos. Hypnosis is Hypno's only sleep-(AH)inducing move, letting it put foes to sleep and notably doing so before Exeggutor can do the same to Hypno. However, it is quite unreliable due to its low accuracy, and Hypno would rather paralyze most faster foes such as Tauros and Gengar with Thunder Wave and attempt to KO them with Psychic. Thunder Wave is a pivotal tool for Hypno, letting it come out victorious in many situations it may not have otherwise. For example, if Gengar misses its Hypnosis, Hypno can paralyze it and 2HKO it with Psychic, while Gengar is either forced to switch out, use Explosion, or attempt to land a second Hypnosis through paralysis, which only hits 44.8% of the time. Seismic Toss deals consistent damage to all foes, notably 4HKOing Exeggutor and Jynx, while Psychic and Submission do paltry damage to them. Submission 3HKOes Chansey, which switches into Hypno with ease if it lacks the move. The recoil from Submission can also be used in your favor, as Hypno can use it to knock itself out before Chansey can heal off the damage with Soft-Boiled, making it easily revenge killed by one of Hypno's teammates such as Snorlax or Tauros. Counter can be used to help against Tauros, as a countered Body Slam followed by a Psychic KOes it, letting Hypno beat Tauros in the one-on-one if it attacks with Body Slam, which Hypno can fail to do without Counter. It's worth noting that Tauros can still beat Hypno with Counter if it goes for Earthquake or flinches it with Stomp. Hypno without Counter also benefits from the mere threat of Counter, with Tauros being wary of using Body Slam on it. A Hypno with a Defense stat of 154 can OHKO Tauros with a countered Body Slam; this is achieved with a Defense DV of 1 and 29 IVs, although a critical hit Body Slam has a 59% chance to OHKO a Hypno with 154 Defense, and Earthquake followed by Hyper Beam KOes Hypno with this reduction in bulk. Hypno is the best anti-lead against lead Mewtwo and also a good anti-lead against the uncommon lead Lapras. Jynx is also a good anti-lead to Mewtwo, but it is OHKOed by Mewtwo's Self-Destruct and 2HKOed by the very rare Fire Blast.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Meditate can be used in place of Psychic to reapply the Speed drop from paralysis and make Hypno's Submission more powerful, with +1 Submission 2HKOing Chansey and +2 Submission 2HKOing Snorlax 75.4% of the time. However, this set is walled by Gengar and does next to nothing to opposing Psychic-(AH)types such as Exeggutor and Mewtwo. Headbutt can be used over Submission on Meditate sets to attempt to paraflinch foes. Headbutt also has higher accuracy than Submission and does more than Submission to Psychic-types but does much less to Chansey and Snorlax and is incredibly unreliable due to only having a 47.5% chance to immobilize a paralyzed foe with Headbutt. Rest can be used in Hypno's fourth moveslot to try and stall out Chansey, Alakazam, and Exeggutor if Sleep Clause is activated, but this is easily exploitable, as Hypno is extremely vulnerable during its sleep turns, becoming setup fodder for Mewtwo, Mew, and Slowbro. Psychic can be dropped in favor of running Submission and Seismic Toss on the same set, as it deals with common Chansey and Exeggutor variants within the same build. It also forces Psychic-types with Rest to use Rest more predictably, which can provide safer switch-in opportunities for Hypno's teammates, although it has a much worse time against Gengar, Tauros, and Zapdos.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Faster Sleepers**: Jynx and Gengar both outspeed and put Hypno to sleep with relative ease, with Jynx having the opportunity to attempt to freeze something with Blizzard as Hypno switches out. Gengar is less reliable at putting Hypno to sleep than Jynx, and it can be paralyzed and 2HKOed by Psychic if it misses Hypnosis, but it nevertheless is still favored to beat Hypno.

**Pokemon with Recovery**: Pokemon with recovery moves, such as Alakazam, Starmie, Mew, and Mewtwo,(AC) sit on Hypno and exploit its lack of recovery to KO it with ease. However, these Pokemon hate paralysis and will usually avoid a one-on-one interaction with Hypno. Chansey also checks Hypno if it lacks Submission.

**Physical Attackers**: Most physical attackers beat Hypno one-on-one, such as Snorlax and Mew if Sleep Clause is activated and Tauros if Hypno lacks Counter.

**Psychic-types with Rest**: Slowbro can switch into Hypno with ease if Sleep Clause is activated, set up on it with Amnesia or paralyze it, and shrug off damage with Rest. Jynx outspeeds Hypno and 3HKOes it with Blizzard, Exeggutor with Rest also walls Hypno, although it can'(AA)t do much damage to Hypno in return. Opposing Hypno with Rest also walls Hypno without Rest. Slowbro, Jynx, Exeggutor, and Hypno all avoid 3HKOes from Seismic Toss Hypno, letting them Rest loop Hypno and stall it out. However, these Rests are easy to exploit by Hypno switching out as the Rest Psychic-type sleeps.

[OVERVIEW]

Hypno holds a niche in the tier as the fastest viable Pokemon that has access to both a sleep-inducing move in Hypnosis, and a paralysis spreading move. (period) in Thunder Wave, being able This allows Hypno to outspeed and sleep (I'm not sure if you're allowed to use sleep as a verb or not. Check this with sabel or someone else to make sure) Exeggutor and Lapras with Hypnosis, and either attempt to sleep (again, sleep as a verb) or paralyze faster opponents such as Tauros, Gengar, and Zapdos and attempt to brute force them with STAB Psychic, which 2HKOes Gengar, 3HKOes Tauros, and is a near guaranteed 4HKO on Zapdos. you don't need these calcs for the overview, fits better in the set description. Also, will Hypno ever use Hypnosis vs things like Tauros Gengar and Zapdos? it's super risky because of the accuracy and generally it would be better to just twave them, since they all hate para. I'd suggest removing the "attempt to sleep" bit and just say twave is good because it paralyzes the faster threats. Hypno's biggest strength is its role compression, being a jack of all trades lead that covers many matchups for at (space) least neutrally, with Thunder Wave being one of the main reasons to use it over Jynx and Exeggutor. Exeggutor has stun spore though, and this kinda contradicts what you said earlier, because there it seemed like you were making speed it's main niche. Submission also helps give it a better time vs Chansey, who is 3HKOed by Submission. Hypno has decent bulk, being able to live a couple stray hits from foes such as Tauros and Zapdos with relative ease, being 4HKOed by Zapdos' Thunderbolt and Mewtwo's Blizzard, 3HKOed by Tauros' Body Slam 63% of the time, and having a ~53% chance to be 3HKOed by Lapras' Blizzard. For this last sentence, remove the calcs and explain how the bulk differentiates it from eggy/jynx, such as not being weak to blizzard/drill peck for the former, and not being paper-thin physically like the latter.

While Hypno does many roles decently, it fails to do any of these roles particularly well,; it's fast enough to outspeed Exeggutor and Lapras, but not fast enough to outspeed any other relevant threats, defnitely mention here that it's outsped and shut down completely by Jynx its bulky enough to tank a few hits from foes such as Tauros and Zapdos, but it has little staying power due to its lack of recovery. Could mention competition with zam/mie here who don't have hypnosis but have recovery. Hypno also has to rely on Hypnosis to sleep something, making it somewhat unreliable in getting sleep off. Hypno has the same issue that it has in OU too, that it has to compete with a ton of psychic types that are just better than it. All in all, Hypno is a jack of all trades, master of none lead that, while it doesn't have many particularly bad matchups, doesn't have many good matchups either. You should defnitely mention here that generally using hypno is not reccomended. Most of the time, Exeggutor will be better than it due to its more accurate sleep move, and more importantly explosion. That should defnitely be mentioned. For a niche mon like Hypno the flaws of the mon should be very clear so players new to Ubers understand why it's not commonly seen.

Throughout the overview you keep mentioning Lapras over and over again. I understand why though, since it's one of the few mons that Hypno outspeeds that eggy doesn't. But Lapras is extremely rare, so I don't think it should be mentioned as much as you have mentioned it here.
After reading the whole analysis I'm gonna add on to this, Lapras is mentioned way too much here for a mon that has <1% usage in ubers tournaments

Psychic is Hypno's main STAB move, being able to 2HKO Gengar, 3HKO Tauros, and 4HKO Zapdos and Lapras, though the 3HKO on Tauros and the 4HKO on Zapdos and Lapras can be turned into a 2HKO and 3HKO respectively if Hypno gets a special drop. This is way to many KOs to be mentioned. I would probably rephrase this to "Psychic is Hypnos's main STAB move, notably 2HKOing the common Gengar lead, while also doing decent damage to other common leads such as Tauros and Zapdos. Psychic can also reapply the opponents speed drop from paralysis if it drops their special, which can let a paralyzed Hypno outspeed a paralyzed foe. Hypnosis is Hypno's only sleep inducing move, getting sleep off vs foes such as Exeggutor, Lapras, and Mewtwo. I would re-word this sentence. Keep in mind Hypno is a lead, and its main niche is that it outspeeds and sleeps Exeggutor, so I would focus on the eggy matchup here. However it is quite unreliable due to its low accuracy, and Hypno would rather paralyze most faster foes such as Tauros and Gengar with Thunder Wave and attempt to KO them with Psychic. (i like that you emphasized this) Thunder Wave is a pivotal tool for Hypno, letting it come out victorious in many situations it may not have otherwise, such as if Gengar misses its Hypnosis, Hypno can paralyze it and 2HKO it with Psychic, while a paralyzed Gengar is either forced to switch out, blow up use Explosion, or attempt to land a 2nd Hypnosis through paralysis, which only hits around ~45% 44.8% of the time. Seismic Toss gets consistent damage on all foes and has much more PP than Psychic, notably 4HKOing Exeggutor and Jynx and 5HKOing Mewtwo in what secnario will a mewtwo ever take 5 seismic tosses without recovering or something. Even if mewtwo is sleeping it's better to just go tauros or lax or something on the sleeping m2 than it is to spam stoss while normally Psychic and Submission do paltry damage to them. Submission 3HKOes Chansey, who switches into Hypno with ease if it lacks Submission, the recoil from Submission can also be used in your favor, as Hypno can knock itself out before Chansey can heal off the damage with Soft-Boiled. Making it easily revenge killed by one of Hypno's teammates, such as Snorlax or Tauros. Counter can be used to KO Tauros, as a countered Body Slam into Psychic KOes it, letting Hypno beat Tauros in the 1v1, which it can fail to do without Counter.

Hypno has way more checks and counters than this. I'll list a few below
-Chansey if sleep clause is active and no submission
-Physical attackers typically beat it one-on-one
-Recover users (zam, mie, both mews) if sleep clause is active
-Slowbro if sleep clause is active

(Rest Psychics aka Jynx/Exeggutor/other Hypno, while rare, could be included here as those can wall Hypno)

QC: 2/2

Comments:
It also has an easy time sleeping the uncommon lead Mewtwo and Lapras.
Though it is uncommon, Hypno is the best Pokemon against lead Mewtwo. You could emphasize it.
(Compare with Jynx, Jynx has potential Fire Blast Mewtwo weakness)

Psychic can be dropped in favor of running Submission and Seismic Toss on the same set, but has a much worse time vs Gengar, Tauros, and Zapdos.
Depending on your building plan Submission + Seismic Toss deals with common Chansey + Exeggutor better. Consistent damage of Seismic Toss is good to make opposing Psychic type Pokemon with Rest / Recover / Soft-Boiled heal earlier and give you better opportunities switching Hypno's teammates in.

Psychic is Hypno's main STAB move, notably 2HKOing Gengar(RC) while also doing decent damage to other common leads such as Tauros and Zapdos. Jynx is also a good anti-lead to Mewtwo, but it is OHKOed by Mewtwo's Self-Destruct and 2HKOed by the very rare Fire Blast. (these two sentence feel out of place next to the move explanations, I'd strongly recommend moving them to later in the paragraph) However, it is quite unreliable due to its low accuracy, and Hypno would rather paralyze most faster foes such as Tauros and Gengar with Thunder Wave and attempt to KO them with Psychic. Headbutt also has higher accuracy than Submission(RC) and does more than Submission to Psychic-(AH)types but does much less to Chansey and Snorlax and is incredibly unreliable (I'm familiar with why Headbutt is unreliable but a newer reader would be confused if you say Headbutt is more accurate than Submission while also being less reliable, since accuracy is a major part of what makes something reliable. Maybe list the para + flinch chance somewhere in the sentence to drive the point home or reword the reasoning for why Headbutt is bad). Rest can be used in Hypno's 4th moveslot to try and stall out Chansey, Alakazam, and Exeggutor if sleep clause Sleep Clause is activated, but this is easily exploitable as Hypno is extremely vulnerable in the turns its asleep during its sleep turns, becoming setup fodder for Mewtwo, Slowbro, and Mew (sentence could flow better if you put Mew before Slowbro but that's 200% subjective, up to you). It also forces Psychic-types with Rest to use Rest more predictably, which can provide safer switch-in opportunities for Hypno's teammates, although it has a much worse time vs against Gengar, Tauros, and Zapdos.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Faster Sleepers**: Jynx and Gengar both outspeed and sleep Hypno put Hypno to sleep with relative ease, with Jynx having the opportunity to attempt to freeze something with Blizzard as Hypno switches out. Gengar is less reliable at sleeping Hypno than Jynx, and it can be paralysed paralyzed and 2HKOed by Psychic if it misses Hypnosis, but it nevertheless is still favored to land Hypnosis vs beat Hypno.

**Pokemon with Recovery**: Pokemon with recovery moves, such as Alakazam, Starmie, Mew, and Mewtwo,(AC) sit on Hypno and exploit its lack of recovery to KO it with ease. Although However, these Pokemon hate paralysis and will usually tend to avoid a one-on-one interaction with Hypno. Chansey also checks Hypno if it lacks Submission.

**Physical Attackers**: Most physical attackers beat Hypno one-on-one, such as Snorlax and Mew if sleep clause Sleep Clause is activated(RC) and Tauros if Hypno lacks Counter.

**Psychic-types with Rest**: Slowbro can switch into Hypno with ease if sleep clause Sleep Clause is activated, set up on it with Amnesia,(AC) or paralyze it, and shrug off damage with Rest, with Seismic Toss only being a 4HKO. Jynx outspeeds Hypno and 3HKOes it with Blizzard, while Hypno can only force 4HKO it with Seismic Toss. Exeggutor with Rest also walls Hypno, with Seismic Toss 4HKOing it, although it can'(AA)t do much damage to Hypno in return. Opposing Hypno with Rest also walls Hypno without Rest, being 4HKOed by Seismic Toss. However, these Rest(RA)s are eaay easy to exploit by Hypno switching out as the Rest Psychic-type sleeps. (I feel like there's definitely a better/more efficient way to mention the Seismic Toss calc if they're all 4HKOed by it. Maybe don't mention it until you've run through all the examples and then add a final sentence mentioning that all of them are only 4HKOed/avoid a 3HKO from SToss, thus letting them rest loop blahblahblah. The way you set it up here does the job well enough but it could be better, methinks)

[OVERVIEW]

Hypno holds a niche in the tier as the fastest viable Pokemon that has access to both a sleep-inducing move and a paralysis-(AH)spreading move. This allows Hypno to outspeed and sleep Exeggutor put Exeggutor to sleep with Hypnosis (RC) and as well as paralyze faster foes such as Tauros, Gengar, and Zapdos and attempt to brute-(AH)force them with STAB Psychic. Hypno's biggest strength is its role compression, being a jack-(AH)of-(AH)all-(AH)trades lead that covers many matchups at least neutrally, with Thunder Wave being one of the main reasons to use Hypno it over Jynx(RC).(AP) aswell as giving it Thunder Wave even gives Hypno a slight edge over Exeggutor, who which has to use the innacurate inaccurate Stun Spore(RP);(ASC) Submission also helps give it (I'd rephrase this to say "gives it" instead of "helps give it" if Sub is the only thing affecting the Chansey interaction, otherwise it's fine) a better time vs against Chansey. Hypno has decent bulk, being able to live survive a couple stray hits from foes such as Tauros and Zapdos with relative ease. Hypno's mono-Psychic (RH)typing also grants it no common weaknesses, unlike Exeggutor, (AC) who which has weaknesses to Blizzard and Drill Peck (maybe include example Blizz/Peck users to drive home the point about them being more common attacks). It also has much better physical bulk than Jynx, who which is incredibly physically frail.

While Hypno does fill many roles decently, it fails to do any of these roles particularly well: it's fast enough to outspeed Exeggutor and Lapras (RC) but not fast enough to outspeed any other relevant threats, being outsped and completely shut down by Jynx. It'(AA)s bulky enough to tank a few hits from foes such as Tauros and Zapdos, but it has little staying power due to its lack of recovery. Hypno also has to rely on Hypnosis to sleep something put something to sleep, making it somewhat unreliable in getting sleep off. Hypno has heavy competition as a lead Psychic-type lead, with Exeggutor being the straight up objectively better sleeper, Jynx being faster than it and having STAB Blizzard, and Alakazam and Starmie having Recover. While Finally, while Hypno has effectively no weaknesses, it also lacks many of the resistances that Exeggutor has, taking neutral damage from Rhydon's Earthquake, Gengar's Thunderbolt, and Slowbro and Starmie's Surf, making it much worse at switching into those threats. All in all, Hypno is a jack of all trades, master of none lead that, while it doesn't have many particularly bad matchups, doesn't have many good matchups either, being mostly outclassed by Exeggutor for its better bulk, higher accuracy sleep move, and Explosion. (Personally I like summary sentences like these, but we're not supposed to use them at the end of overviews)

Set Description
=========
Psychic is Hypno's main STAB move, notably 2HKOing Gengar(RC) while also doing decent damage to other common leads such as Tauros and Zapdos. Hypnosis is Hypno's only sleep-(AH)inducing move, getting sleep off vs foes, notably outspeeding Exeggutor letting it put foes to sleep and notably doing so before Exeggutor can do the same to Hypno. Hypno is the best anti-lead to against lead Mewtwo and also a good anti-lead to against the uncommon lead Lapras. Thunder Wave is a pivotal tool for Hypno, letting it come out victorious in many situations it may not have otherwise, such as otherwise. For example, if Gengar misses its Hypnosis, Hypno can paralyze it and 2HKO it with Psychic, while a paralyzed Gengar is either forced to switch out, use Explosion, or attempt to land a 2nd second Hypnosis through paralysis, which only hits 44.8% of the time. Seismic Toss gets deals consistent damage on to all foes, notably 4HKOing Exeggutor and Jynx, (AC) while Psychic and Submission do paltry damage to them. Submission 3HKOes Chansey, who which switches into Hypno with ease if it lacks Submission the move(RC).(AP) the The recoil from Submission can also be used in your favor, as Hypno can use it to knock itself out before Chansey can heal off the damage with Soft-Boiled(RP),(AC) Making making it easily revenge killed by one of Hypno's teammates(RC) such as Snorlax or Tauros. Counter can be used to KO help against (should only say "KO" there if Counter KOes on its own) Tauros, as a countered Body Slam into followed by a Psychic KOes it, letting Hypno beat Tauros in the 1v1 one-on-one if it attacks with Body Slam, which Hypno can fail to do without Counter. Although It's worth noting that Tauros can still win vs beat Hypno with Counter if it goes for Earthquake vs Hypno or flinches it with Stomp. Hypno without Counter also benefit benefits from the mere threat of Counter, with Tauros being weary to wary of using Body Slam into on it. A Hypno with a Defense stat of 154 can OHKO Tauros with a Countered countered Body Slam(RC);(ASC) this is achieved with a Defense DV of 1 and 29 IVs, although a Tauros Body Slam crit critical hit Body Slam has a 59% chance to OHKO with a Hypno with 154 Defense, and Earthquake into followed by Hyper Beam KOes Hypno with 154 Defense this reduction in bulk.

Headbutt can be used in favor of over Submission on Meditate sets to attempt to attempt to ParaFlinch paraflinch the foe foes. Rest can be used in Hypno's 4th fourth moveslot to try and stall out Chansey, Alakazam, and Exeggutor if sleep clause Sleep Clause is activated, but this is easily exploitable, (AC) as Hypno is extremely vulnerable in the turns its asleep during its sleep turns, becoming setup fodder for Mewtwo, Slowbro, and Mew (sentence could flow better if you put Mew before Slowbro but that's 200% subjective, up to you). - Commas before 'and' 'but' 'or' are only needed if both clauses / parts of the sentence are independent / do not make sense without the other part / are not grammatically complete sentences. If only one clause is independent, the comma is not needed. "This allows Hypno to outspeed and put Exeggutor to sleep with Hypnosis, and paralyze faster foes such as Tauros, Gengar, and Zapdos and attempt to brute-force them with STAB Psychic." The comma here is incorrect because "paralyze faster foes such as Tauros, Gengar, and Zapdos and attempt to brute-force them with STAB Psychic" isn't an independent clause. The normal fix is to just remove the comma, but removing it here would create a mess with four 'ands' in a row. What you could do instead is replace the and before the comma with 'as well as' or make both clauses independent
- Pokemon can't 'live' hits, they survive / take them in the same way you don't say someone 'lived' an accident, they survived it.
- "Which" clauses should always have commas before them.
- The dex needs spaces between slashes on sets, so Submission/Counter should be Submission / Counter, or the dex won't recognise the moves and won't be able to upload it.
- I would avoid cutting examples; examples help contextualise analyses by referencing the meta. Saying which faster threats it should paralyse is helpful to link the point back to RBY Ubers and the types of leads you should commonly click Twave on
- Commas before 'while' are needed when it means 'whereas' / is showing contrast. If 'while' is used to mean 'at the same time as' then a comma isn't needed. "Seismic Toss deals consistent damage to all foes, notably 4HKOing Exeggutor and Jynx while Psychic and Submission do paltry damage to them." While = showing contrast between the two different moves here
- 1v1 or similar should be replaced with one-on-one
- "Weary" means tired; "wary" means being cautious. Writers often use the former when they mean the latter
- "set up on it with Amnesia,(AC) or paralyze it, and shrug off damage with Rest" this change slightly alters the meaning. The original says that you either setup on it or paralyze it, but your change making it into a list suggests that it does all these things.

Implemented (as for "if dvs are being lowered should this be on the set?" I don't think so as its incredibly niche and basically only there as a sort of footnote. Kind of like "hey, lowering your dvs to this can do this, but its not really worth it")
