Other Creative / Underrated Sets Thread (Read the thread, NO SHITTY GIMMICKS)

I like this but I wouldn't call it creative/underrated, it's more or less a standard lead set. To keep the post constructive, I'd add that you might consider Assault Vest over Chople Berry; has the same effect on Fighting-type special attacks, but gives you a bit of a boost against every other type of Special Attack and isn't limited to one consumption. You won't be staying in on physical threats, and things like Lucario will just be hitting you rather than setting up anyway, in experience, especially if this is your first out.
Assault Vest defeats the point of the set though - you can't use it with Stealth Rock.

So it does, that was an oversight of mine. Stealth Rock isn't the whole point of the set, though, and it should be slashed with a coverage move. At least, it depends on your take on the set; there are many reliable rockers that love having T-Tar for a partner, like Ferro, for example.

well how about this?

Areodactyl @ focus sash
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4hp/252 atk/252spe
-taunt
-defog
-earthquake
-stone edge

Tried it out as my team's defogger and it works really well since it avoids sticky web and it hits faster than most pokes. Not to mention this guy resists both stabs of talonflame. Defog's ability to lower evasion in the process helps preserve its focus sash as well. Its other moves are pretty much its normal moves. Taunt keeps things like t-wave and wilowisp from making it useless. Eq and stone edge helps round off its coverage even though you could throw in stealth rocks if you want. Its open to being walled by steel types though. Btw, its a shame this guy doesnt have head smash cuz that move with hone claws and rock head will make for a nasty sweeper.

If its function is to switch in and remove entry hazards with Defog, why is it holding Focus Sash if it gets nullified by Stealth Rock?

okay i have been using this and it working so well

Hippowdon Leftovers
252 def 252 hp 4 Atk

- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Slack Off

pairing this with a reliable hazard setter it can wall for days and keep phazing.I think hippo will be forgotton because of the nerf but it can take damage and heal so quickly it can also just get great chip damage on a lot of pokes

I start off with either Politoed/Sylveon or Gengar/Scolipede

Basically baton pass is the key here, and it's straight forward, I like the type coverage that the team gives and scoli/sylv have great ability to build stats before they can baton pass. Hopefully obvious, baton pass sylv ---> gengar and scoli ---> garchomp

I really really have been having fun with this set

thoughts?

Here's a game where everything was going flawless to the strategy till I made a terrible prediction hahaha

But hopefully that gives a sense of how the team works out? since everyone got a bit of play in there.

Unfortunately one of my best games with this team didn't give me a replay :( I have a text log if anyone would like to read it

Some of the counters I have noticed to this team, is that anyone with knowledge of movesets (baton pass) will easily predict everything you do, if you don't play this team well. Like don't use bp to switch in Garchomp when they have noivern or some shit on the other team, (I learned the hard way)

Also sorry again if I'm posting this in the wrong place v.v

This is more of a core than a single set but I believe that it will be very effective in the next gen metagame and I personally will be running it on most of my teams.
Hydreigon@Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Timid/Modest
EVs: 4 HP/ 252 Sp. Attack/ 252 Speed

Aegislash@Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 Attack/ 4 Defense
-Iron Head
-Sacred Sword
-Shadow Sneak/ Shadow Claw
-King's Shield/ Swords Dance
Don’t worry; those goose bumps will go away in a second. Yes, your eyes do see this correctly. These two Pokémon have absolutely perfect coverage together. Their types coupled with Hydreigon’s ability complement each other in a way that can be viewed as an offensive rebirth of the Jellicent/ Ferrothorn core in gen 5. With the new mechanics and its typing, Aegislash is left weak to both ghost and dark along with ground and fire, all of which is resisted by Hydreigon. And on the switch in of one of the biggest competitors for gen 6, Mega Gengar, Hydreigon takes only {247-251} damage (assuming max Sp.Atk), outspeeds with the scarf(with either timid or modest nature for Hydreigon), and does about 70% with a dark pulse. Sounds pretty awesome correct? But it doesn’t stop there. Let’s say you 2KO that mega Gengar and you’re celebrating your ass off “Yay, I demolished your Mega Gengar and I’m still packing my Ampharos with Fabio hair!” But then, he sends out a Surpluff ready to avenge his fallen comrade. Well easy solution, send out that Aegislash to tank to resisted fairy type attack off of base 150 defenses and you’re ready to retaliate with Iron Head. There are some much to be said about this game changing core, so much so that I cannot cover it all my self so I shall Baton Pass to the rest of you all to give your thoughts about this powerhouse of a duo.

I think one set everyone underrates is a mixed aegilash with autotomize; most counters of aegilash are pretty slow, and have poor special defense. Combine Autotomize with shadow ball, and you have some counters suddenly defeated ;) Don't have the set to hand tho.

An AV Ttar set that has been working wonders for me on Wifi and PS Non-bank OU is this:
Tyranitar@Assault Vest
Quiet
252 HP 60 Atk 192 SAtk
Sand Stream

Fire Blast
Ice Beam
Thunderbolt/Crunch/Pursuit
Stone Edge

MixTar is a great lure this gen that can scare off the ultra-popular Gengar and Talonflame while being able to KO switch ins with high powered special attacks (Gliscor,Ferrothorn,Zygarde,Garchomp,Scizor,Lando-T,Skarmory,Forretress,Azumarill,Gyarados,Togekiss,Mawile,Lucario,Breloom, just to name a few) while still being able to tank huge special blows (AV makes up for the lack of SDef EVs) and retaliate with a STAB Stone Edge.

T-bolt seems really odd on this set but my team needed some extra insurance against Azumarill, I used to run Crunch though (dont have access to Pursuit on cartridge) but I just never found myself using it too much as Stone Edge hits anything I would hit with Crunch as hard as it needs to.

Unfortunately the Nature leaves it outsped by Aegislash, though according to prior posts in the Tyranitar thread and personal experience Sacred Sword annihilates it anyway and I can still dent it with Fire Blast on the switch.

Aegislash @ Choice Band. 252 HP / 252 Atk

1) Shadow Claw, 2) Iron Head, 3) Shadow Sneak, 4) Sacred Sword

People always assume the standard King's Shield Swords Dance set. Banded Aegislash is quite a different monster. He is to be used as a wallbreaker, a hit and run attacker. His job is to punch holes for another mon to sweep. Quite effective, if I do say so myself.

Since Genesect is still unbanned, Wynaut?

Genesect @ Life Orb
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Hasty Nature
- U-turn
- Iron Head
- Explosion
- Blaze Kick

This set can bluff special or scarf sets until it's too late for your opponent. A plus 1 Life Orb Explosion will kill anything not resistant or immune to it. To put it into perspective, when with just Life Orb, Explosion will kill Chansey. I am positive. U-Turn is obvious, Iron Head is decent STAB, especially against Fairies. Explosion is just sheer carnage, and Blaze Kick is for Ferrothorn, so he doesn't wall you. I guess if you want, you can use ExtremeSpeed, but it leaves you walled by too much.

PS: I use this on an Explosion Team. So fun!

Go Shadow Ball over Shadow Claw. Even uninvested, Aegislash has monstrous Special Attack that can put a dent in a lot of things. That, and most of his counters have low Special Defense to begin with.

Talonflame @ Flying Gem
Trait: Gale Wings
EVS: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Adamant / Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Acrobatics
- Bulk Up
- Roost

Currently I have massive issues with the EV spread, as I am torn between EVing this just enough for the fastest relevant Flying-resist threats or just going standard (I chose the latter to make this easier for readers). Most Talonflames usually go for Swords Dance as their boosting move, which is understandable as Talonflame needs the power. The problem is attaining the boost without taking too much damage, which Talonflame usually does, making it too dangerous to set up most of the time. Bulk Up can help remedy this issue, providing a much better buffer for resisted attacks (like Blaziken, Lucario and Scizor) while powering up for a sweep. It also makes much better use of Roost (which gets priority btw). The tradeoff is being much weaker than Swords Dance which can make use of the single turn of setup arguably better, but Bulk Up being slightly safer.
Talonflame Leftovers
Trait: Gale Wings
EVS: 252 hp/ 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature
-Bravebird
-U turn/ Flare Blitz
-Bulk up
-Roost
While i also run bulkup i use talonflame a little differently hoping the abuse the galewings further than just a priority roost. With this set my talonflame is usually the lead to throw off hazard leads, Giving me a free turn to bulk up and force a switch or drag the lead into a stall war that should end favourable due to priority roost and leftovers, the hp evs make bravebird sustainable and more importantly ensure two solid hits most of the time. I have run this set a few times and it was able to force unfavourable trades at worst and occastionally sweeping with 2 bulkups, With regards to u turn as a questionable attack it is there to esacape from head up matches that can't be won and salvaging talonflame to be a strong revenge killer for the rest of the match. The birds high base speed enables it to outspeed most of its checks and counters with u turn without any speed evs. Flare blitz may seem to be the more viable move but i perceive that most players expect talonflame to carry flareblitz and hence will work to counter a move that i don't even carry ( a metagame trick kinda) giving me free turns to get switch priority or bulk up. In summary my set is based around using bulk up and u turn to goad my opponent to give me switch priority while fufiilling the roles of revenge killer as well as conditional sweeper. ( 4x weakness the stealth rocks is usually not an issue due to the way i use talonflame its seldom lives more than one switch and as long as it trades favourably or gives me priority its job is done)

Aegislash @ Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- King's Shield
- Shadow Sneak
- Sacred Sword

I've tried some offensive sets for Aegislash but, if it has this EV spread, it can be more bulkier without losing offensive power. Ghost+Fight = perfect coverage for hitting all treaths (thanks to new gen's ghost move boost vs steel types, hi Skarmory).

Furfrou @ Leftovers
Ability: Fur Coat
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Protect
- Toxic/Sucker Punch
- Baby-Doll Eyes
- Return

This is a strong physical wall, i'm not joking. This taking ridiculous damages from all the physical attackers like Diggersby, Mega-Tyranitar & Co. It has the move Baby-Doll Eyes with priority +1 that give -1 in opponent's Atk. Toxic preferred for protect+drop purposes. If you want to hit ghosts, feel free to use Sucker Punch but, with Toxic, it makes more sense.

Wobbuffet @ Custap Berry
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
Bold Nature
- Counter
- Mirror Coat
- Encore
- Destiny Bond

Custap Wobbuffet is best Wobbuffet. Honestly, while no Lefties might be a dead giveaway, this set is quite capable of taking out three mons in one match, something I've done several times now. Max Defenses because it actually makes him impossible to be OHKO'd by Banded T-Tar, something 28 HP Wobb has a small chance of being ko'd by. Moves are self explanatory, with Destiny Bond being very important in winning Weather Wars and killing off Magnezones for your Dragons to sweep or just for one final bang. Highly effective, extremely deadly.

Aegislash @ Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- King's Shield
- Shadow Sneak
- Sacred Sword

I've tried some offensive sets for Aegislash but, if it has this EV spread, it can be more bulkier without losing offensive power. Ghost+Fight = perfect coverage for hitting all treaths (thanks to new gen's ghost move boost vs steel types, hi Skarmory).

I would think that Max HP is standard on something so slow as Aegislash. I'm surprised that it isn't.

Hello, everyone. I made an account here because I wish to return to competitive battling. I've been curious about the current generation's competitive scene, so I've been testing some movesets that I would like to share (if this is the wrong thread, please don't hurt me. :( )

~Tank-Rex ~
Tyrantrum @ Choice Band
Ability: Rock Head
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Def / 4 Speed
Adamant Nature
- Head Smash
- Crunch
- Dragon Tail
- Earthquake

Slow revenge killer/tank, with high defense. Because of his typing, Tyrantrum can endure certain attacks easily. With access to STAB Head Smash x Rock Head makes it all around better for Tyrantrum to guarantee a Ohko on most Pokemon. Dragon Tail can wreck a boosted physical Pokemon's sweep in some cases while dealing STAB damage

Thoughts?

i've had some recent success with lead exca.

Excadrill (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock

although terrakion and garchomp arguably surpass it at setting up sr, exca also has the ability to spin away any hazards being set up on my side of the field. it also has mold breaker to hit things like rotom-w and latios/latias really hard with earthquake. although, tbh, it dosen't really function as a suicide lead. rather, in my time using it, it's best to lead with it, and if you have a favorable matchup, go for sr. afterwards, it's used like a regular spinner. although sash or air balloon would be options for it, i've chosen life orb for the extra power it grants.

I think instead of a flying gem set for Talonflame, this might work better:
Talonflame @ Focus Sash
Ability: Gale Wings
Nature: Jolly (just to outspeed other Talonflames)
EV's: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spd
-Acrobatics
-Swords Dance
-Flare Blitz
-Will-O-Wisp

Talonflame is pretty damn frail, and with a 4x weakness to Rock, I figure that a lot of hits are going to OHKO it. Stealth rocks are a lot less prevalent with Defog's buff, so I don't think there's a huge issue with switching in (although this would probably work better as a lead). But being able to lay down a Swords Dance, lose the focus sash, and spam a +1 priority, 110 damage Acrobatics (not counting STAB) is pretty freaking nice. Since there's a pretty good chance of a switch in to something that resists flying moves, Will-O-Wisp is a nice move (now that its accuracy got raised) to cripple any physical attackers, and Flare Blitz would be a suicide move that could probably take something out with it. Not saying that this is a GREAT set, but I've been using it to some success and thought I'd share. Not sure if this has been used by other people, and if it's a really popular set I apologize c:
Maybe consider overheat over flare blitz. You're mostly using it for steels (or, for overheat, often just one steel type per team), who are in general weak enough on the special side that running off your own SpA can still work. Then you won't have to resort to killing yourself. You can run hasty/naive anyway since you're expecting to take 2 hits anyway.

Imho, SR to Excadrill is a waste. You can take advantage of Sand Rush for outspeed the world. In 5 turns you could potentially sweep entire teams. If you relegates it to the role of spinner, ok, it's the best spinner of the game but, imo, sr>sdance and sand rush > mold breaker. You can give SR to someone who will set them good like Gliscor or Donphan (they both resists fighting moves, Excadrill is weak to mach punch).

Not sure if this is OU worthy, and i don't have any logs because i can't play this meta yet, but i haven't seen this set around yet:

Weavile @ Poison Barb
252 HP 252 Spd 4 Atk/ 252 Atk 252 Spd 4 Hp/ something in between
Jolly
Pickpocket

Fling
Knock Off
Icicle Crash(/ Ice Shard)
Swords Dance

Behold, the one mon that can royally fuck up anyones item strategy. With the new and buffed knock off, which sits at almost 100 bp when the opponent is holding an item, combined with STAb, makes weavile hit very, very hard. As if that wasn't enough, pickpocket acy=tually works before knock-off according to smogon, so weavile also steals whatever it is its victim is holding. If whatever it stole isn't useful, it can be flung away, and if it is useful you can procedd by setting up with SD and attempt a sweep. The poison barb lets you fling off a 70 bp dark move witha 100% poison chance. A Dark Gem is another option, boosting the first knock-off to rediculos amounts of power. Icicle crash is there for additional STAB/coverage,
since Weavile is already very fast which kind of renders ice shard moot (it's still an option however). The EV's aren't really set in stone, it really depends on what tier this ends up in, what he needs to outspeed and what KO's need to be secured/avoided, but a spread between attack, speed, and some HP seems logical. Constructive criticism is welcome.

EDIT: As Judicator pointed out to me, Pickpocket works the other way around, and takes the opponents item when it hits weavile, making it largely useless. I do believe however i can still make a useful set out of this.

Weavile @ Life Orb
252 Atk/ 252 Spd/ 4 Hp
Jolly

Knock Off
Icicle Crash
Swords Dance
Ice Shard/ Low Kick/ Poison Jab

Almost the same as above, only without actually stealing the items.
Anyways, the combination os Weavile getting icicle crash and the buff on Knock Off, not to mention the offensive buff dark got by no longer being walled by steel types makes this much stronger. The last move is a toss up between STAB Priority, a way to hit a lot of walls harder, and a move to get around the fairies that would otherwise threaten Weavile (except for Carbink and Mawile).

Common misconception (I was fooled by it too; I wanted to make a set like this): Pickpocket steals the item when you attack the opponent.
Truth: Pickpocket steals the item when you get hit.

The ability you're after is the new ability Magician.
