Week 5: Broccol1's Ice!

Ice is quite the rare type, thus making it quite hard to prepare for when it's been built well. This team by Broccol1 is the highest peaking Ice team I've seen of the recent metagame, so why not break it!

Adamant Nature

- Ice Shard
- Superpower

Broc's team doesn't have much of a chance vs this core, ironically. Hippowdon acts at the Hazards Setter (which Ice hates), and its equipped with Eject Button to provide Escadrille 1 free, damages switching, or swipe momentum. Excadrill is the pinnacle of this core, it can 6-0 Ice almost entirely on its own. I gave it LO as opposed to my preferred Choie Band set, so it doesn't get locked into attacks, and can get an extra boost with Swords Dance (after SR, Cloyster has no chance living an Iron Head from this monster). Mamoswine acts as a safe Ice Attack switch-in (thanks to Thick Fat it's able to resist it), and can smack any mon on this team incredibly hard with Superpower. Even though Ground should have the disadvantage, truthfully it has the upper hand so long as you don't give Cloyster the time of day to set up.

...Sorry Broccol1 I think I broke your team :s

Alright, I will explain a little bit how to handle this core with Grass. I believe this won't be difficult to explain since I have already beaten this team before, so let's do it:

Core:
(Whimsicott helps, but not part of the main core)

+

These two mons are your primary tools to effectively check nearly Ice team. Ferrothorn is my main spdef tank/wall and it handles Aurorus and Kyurem-Black, which can trouble the team with strong special attacks (the latter has Teravolt which penetrates through Mega-Venusaur's Thick Fat). My Mega-Venusaur, on the other hand, is more inclined to the physical side and it handles stuff like Mamoswine, Cloyster (and Weavile, although his team doesn't have it). Also, both of them can take a +2 Icicle Spear, assuming they are at full health.

Breloom works really well vs his team, and that's no surprise. It acts as a great late game cleaner with Mach Punch once Avalugg is removed. Also, he doesn't have Ice Shard in his Cloyster so that makes things easier. I have to watch out for priorities on Glalie and Mamoswine, though.

That's my main Cloyster check, and it can be used to prevent it from using Shell Smash, thanks for Prankster Encore. Again, that's possible because his Cloyster lacks Ice Shard. It can also act as an important check for threats like Glalie or whatever Grass teams struggle with through Prankster Stun Spore.

Few notes to be added:
-
You might be asking yourself: How do I actually handle Glalie? Surely, that's a hell of a wallbreaker, but for that, I actually have to play smart. Since Double Edge has got some recoil, it wears down fast to the likes of Mega-Venusaur and even Ferrothorn (although its likely to use Explosion against those said mons, so I go to something that isn't really useful for that matchup, such as Cradily or Celebi) Furthermore, Stun Spore Whimsicott acts as a last resort check for Mega-Glalie so it gets way easier for Breloom to revenge kill.

-Setting Stealth Rock vs Ice is very important, and that includes planning on taking Avalugg down. Ice teams hate having hazards on their side, and stealth rock heavily limits their switching, since it breaks Sash from important mons like Mamoswine and Cloyster and takes 1/4 health from most mons, increases the chances of pulling out a Mach Punch sweep.

Conclusion:
His team is by far the hardest Ice team to face, and his skills with Ice are clearly unmatched (at least on my opinion). But talking about the matchup itself, as weird as it seems, I consider Grass vs Ice a neutral matchup because it has lots of tools to stop Ice teams in their tracks, mentioned throughout this post, so technically, that is a matchup that clearly requires skills from both sides, and tends to win the one who has more experience/knowledge on explotting the cons from the opposing side. Predictions, like nearly other neutral matchup game, are an essential factor that often defines who wins and who loses, and here, it is no exception as well.

Forretress @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Volt Switch
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- Swords Dance
- Bug Bite

Forretress sets up hazards to break sashes, and then can Volt Switch out to Mega Scizor. Gyro is a nice STAB that ultilizes its slow speed. From there, Scizor can set up and sweep with Bullet Punch due to the lack of resists aside from Cloyster, which can't do much back, especially with Roost.

Calcs:
+2 252+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine: 576-678 (159.5 - 187.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 123-145 (35.8 - 42.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem-B: 480-566 (122.7 - 144.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Fusion Bolt vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 100-118 (29.1 - 34.4%) -- 4.2% chance to 3HKO
+2 252+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 222-264 (56.4 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Glalie: 576-678 (191.3 - 225.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Glalie Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 65-77 (18.9 - 22.4%) -- possible 5HKO
+2 252+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 152 HP / 0 Def Aurorus: 1252-1480 (294.5 - 348.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bug Bite vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Cloyster: 213-252 (88.3 - 104.5%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 85-105 (24.7 - 30.6%) -- approx. 100% chance to 4HKO
+2 252 Atk Cloyster Rock Blast (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 170-200 (49.5 - 58.3%) -- approx. 99.6% chance to 2HKO

Scizor can set up on most members of the team, however, issues can arise if Hazards get spun away by Avalugg and Aurorus still has its sash. If this happens, it can fire of a T-Wave, which can cripple Scizor at key moments. Other than that, barring crits, Scizor pretty much sweeps the team.

Victini @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- V-create
- Blue Flare
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn

Mew @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 144 SpD / 112 Spe
Calm Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Stealth Rock
- Defog
- Soft-Boiled

ngl fuck this matchup, idk how broc plays like half the matchups ice has but this shit is like legitimately the closest thing i can think of as an autolose for ice. including steel. fuck generic psychic

Victini has no switchins. And what can it switch in on?

252+ Atk Mega Glalie Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Victini: 226-266 (66.2 - 78%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Mega Glalie Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Victini: 33-40 (9.6 - 11.7%) -- possible 9HKO

if they aint got rocks up, its literally a safe switchin and kill on glalie.

4 SpA Victini Blue Flare vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Glalie: 338-398 (112.2 - 132.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

you CAN switch in on kyu-b, but you cant ohko so i'd jus send tini in on a sac 80% of the time

4 SpA Teravolt Kyurem-B Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Victini: 170-200 (49.8 - 58.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Victini V-create vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem-B: 246-289 (62.9 - 73.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

there are no real v-create switchins, but your real weapon against this shitass type without walrus is blue flare. the closest thing ice gets to a switchin is

4 SpA Victini Blue Flare vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Kyurem-B: 171-202 (43.7 - 51.6%) -- 10.5% chance to 2HKO

victini REALLY enjoys stealth rocks for this reason, fucking wrecks it, also enjoys the ability of mew to burn mamo and cloy, as well as providing defog support should tini want to come in on one of ice's harder hitters, makes spdef mew a fantastic partner to tini, not jus for ice teams but in general. mew can work for absorbing aurorus para, but i'd rather burn it or jus try to kill it with whatever mon is in front of aurorus. youre playing fucking psychic it can probably at least get it to sash

honourable mentions for psy mons that shit on ice: mega medicham, scarf drain punch hoopa-u (stop running it on psychic please), scarf jirachi, metagross as a concept, megallade, slowbro for this particular team because no freeze-dry

reserving mew + jirachi + slowbro

+
+
= Unbreakable by Ice

I mean I think these mons speak for themselves. Mew is the Spdef wall, rock setter, and cripples mons with will-o-wisp. Jirachi with scarf outspeeds everything on the ice team, the only thing stopping it from spamming iron head and winning is avalugg's rocky helmet, but even then, its not that big of a problem. Slowbro is the obvious defensive wall, and para spreader. It can tank any hit.

The only 2 things I can see being a problem is mamoswine with endeavor, and kyurem. But slowbro walls any move of his mamoswines, and endeavor is a contact move so if mamo is low, rocky helmet will kill it off, and slowbro can just switch out to gain health via regenerator. Kyurem black has fusion bolt, but then again, that only does about half to slowbro, and slowbro can just para kyurem and therefore it is no longer a threat.

252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Fusion Bolt vs. 252 HP / 232+ Def Slowbro: 182-216 (46.1 - 54.8%) -- 9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Even Mew can come in to tank that hit, and finish it off with will-o-wisp.
252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Fusion Bolt vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mew: 134-158 (33.1 - 39.1%) -- 10.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Outrage vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Mew: 240-283 (59.4 - 70%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Also with mew can keep pressure up with its rocks and bulk, along with will-o-wisp and either taunt/heal bell to keep healthy.

And if Avalugg is dead, or even if it isnt, scarf jirachi can just sweep alone. After stealth rocks, avalugg can be 3hk0 meaning minimal damage to jirachi, and then proceed to outspeed everything on his team and win with cancer grace.

252 Atk Jirachi Iron Head vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 102-122 (25.9 - 31%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Ability: Synchronize

lopunny easily outspeeds and ohkoes everything on his team bar avalugg and kyurem black. avalugg gets 2hkoed anyways so its not even a switchin and porygon2 is a free switchin to kyurem black.

252 Atk Mega Lopunny High Jump Kick vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 204-240 (51.9 - 61%) -- 92.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery.

porygon2 walls the majority of his team but you have to play around mamoswine to not let its eviolite get knocked off

252 Atk Teravolt Kyurem-B Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 124-147 (33.1 - 39.3%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO

252+ Atk Refrigerate Mega Glalie Explosion vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Porygon2: 283-334 (75.6 - 89.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO yum

pretty much all chansey does is set up rocks, it doesnt really do much else. it can also act as a cleric if u decide to run heal bell over twave

Chansey @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Thunder Wave/Heal Bell
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Stealth Rock

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Recover
- Toxic
- Discharge
- Foul Play

Lopunny @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Return
- Fake Out
- Drain Punch

u should probs run staraptor with this since it counters mamoswine which is basically the only thing that can break through porygon2.
