i do think that it got kind of confusing at times how much the show vacillated between being realistic and being a comedic exaggeration, fwiw though I thought Minori's actions were -- like most of her whimsical crazy cloudcuckoolander-ness and Taiga's violence and Yasuko's childishness etc -- just caricatures of their characters so idrk

any romance animes you like, then, lol, or is it just generally not your thing

first of all Kitamura and Ami being childhood friends who /don't/ get together, that's already pretty damn unexpected for an anime lmao

okay more seriously though, how on earth were the characters flat!! Ami for one, being an alpha bitch queen bee, and that not only being completely seen through but people liking her nonetheless, that was imo a highly interesting take on a type of stock character

things like Minori being a chronic smiley-happy-butterflies-and-rainbows person just so others wouldn't worry about her, her hesitation over not reciprocating Takasu's romantic feelings because she doesn't want to lose him as a friend, Kitamura having to be the perfect student, those are arguably more overdone "twists" but they're nonetheless very real and relatable imo :<

as for the romance I thought their actual relationship was only alright, for all the big deal they made about the tiger and the dragon I didn't think it was as ~deeply meaningful as, I dunno, even Sayaka/Kyoko

it's strange though that you say the story lacked character development, because what I loved most about it was precisely the development! that Taiga had to sort out shit with her family and deal with her emotional issues, learn to live independently, and basically stand on her own feet and find happiness herself before she "got the guy" - which is a refreshing and v positive change from female romantic leads throwing away their everything just to be with their one true love ._.

(though now that you mention it I think it would probably have made for a better moral-of-the-story if she /hadn't/ got the guy, they pulled a Glee and just went with an it's just high school not the end of the world, everyone grows up and lives the rest of their lives)

digimon is awesome btw, loving all the ways in which it's different from 1 and 2

also ive started watching DIGIMON TAMERS v_v (because I have a list of like a dozen awesome-sounding anime and I can't decide on which to watch first lolol) and i vaguely recall you mentioning you watched it somewhere so how is it? I'm on like the third ep and takako's incessant yelling is really giving me major unpleasant flashbacks of how much i hate naruto ugh, but the other two seem interesting and a fairly novel take on / breakaway from the character molds of the previous two seasons

hm i'm done with dtb and it's not exactly "drop everything in your life and watch it NOW" material, but it's definitely worth a go when you get the time imo! it's not anything groundbreaking or genre shattering (then again you didn't find madoka to be that either iirc?), but it tells a good story and tells it well

i'd say the most awesome part of it is its characters: lots of grey morality and magnificent badassery, even the single-arc ones mostly have compelling stories, you can count on pretty much everyone to be at least basically competent human beings

(on the flip side it's comprised of two-episode arcs and the central conflict takes a while to become clear, which you might find irksome, though I personally didn't mind that at all really)

so yeah there's my sales pitch!

i'm watching lots of anime now!! higashi no eden (finished), darker than black (halfway through), and hyouka (five eps or so in) if you wanna swap essays on any of them :p

ive watched a couple eps of bakemono too and it's absolutely hilarious <3 I don't think I know enough of anime/ jap culture to really "get" most of their references and jokes, though, so I'm planning on waiting probably until after I get more familiar with this stuff. definitely going on the top of my (currently nonexistent shhh) to-watch list, though!

(the art also reminds me of madoka magica in the weirdest ways, and ik they're both by shaft, but still, kinda eerie, lol)

I /am/ planning to get to the kara no kyokai movies, it's just that my internet's been pretty terrible so I can't stream shows of such long duration - thinking if it comes to that, I'll torrent it sometime. not sure if I'll do the other one though, mecha doesn't really seem like my thing :/

I still think it was a cop-out of an ending though, for reasons I do not wish to get into atm because of studying. I will elaborate later if you remind me.

anyway I rewatched Madoka a while ago (it's even better on the rewatch :p) and I find I'm feeling much more generous to Sayaka the second time around! also I do think that in many ways the first half is really Sayaka's story (and the second half's Homura's) so yeah I guess I see why people dislike Madoka now!
