tldr use monfernoThe Dual Screens Meganium set that TONE114 posted deserves some love; screens are so underrated in PU.
I've also got a few Meganium Sets that I've been using lately; they look a little strange, but rationale will follow.
Magic Coat Lead:
Meganium @ Life Orb
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Bullet Seed
- Earthquake
- Magic Coat
- Body Slam / Filler
The filler slot can be Aromatherapy, Counter, Toxic, Synthesis, Iron Tail (for mons that resist both Grass/Ground, like Togetic), Leech Seed, Dragon Tail, Swords Dance, Petal Blizzard, or a mixed set with Giga Drain and a Naughty Nature for Defensive Costa. But, on this one, I opted for Body Slam's Paralysis chance to possibly cripple Jumpluff switch-ins.
Adamant 252 Spe Meganium hits 259 Speed total, which outspeeds Jolly 252 Spe Barbaracle by 1 point. This means in cases where Taunt Rocks lead Barbaracle is being used, LO Adamant 252 Atk Bullet Seed OHKOs and prevents Stealth Rock from being set (Barbaracle will go for Stealth Rock most of the time, especially if you have no hazard removal, because it'll rely on its Focus Sash to setup SR for the rest of the match).
252+ Atk Life Orb Meganium Bullet Seed (2 hits) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Barbaracle: 312-374 (109 - 130.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
Likewise, standard Golem is in a similar position to be OHKO'd:
252+ Atk Life Orb Meganium Bullet Seed (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Golem: 280-344 (93 - 114.2%) -- approx. 75% chance to OHKO
Relicanth, Whiscash, Carracosta are all OHKO'd as well (even Defensive Relicanth is OHKO'd by a 4 hit Bullet Seed). Defensive Costa needs a 5 hit to guarantee the OHKO (4 hit is 25% chance to OHKO), but you get the picture.
There are many other Pokemon who are KO'd by Meganium's coverage moves. For example, Sap Sipper Zebstrika switching into a predicted Leech Seed or Giga Drain will be OHKO'd by Meganium's Earthquake instead:
252+ Atk Life Orb Meganium Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zebstrika: 333-393 (114.4 - 135%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Probopass, Ninetales, Pawniard are all similar cases where you can lure with Toxic or a resisted Grass hit, and then OHKO with EQ instead:
252+ Atk Life Orb Meganium Earthquake vs. 172 HP / 0 Def Probopass: 333-395 (109.5 - 129.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Life Orb especially necessary here)
252+ Atk Life Orb Meganium Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Pawniard: 205-242 (88.7 - 104.7%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Life Orb Meganium Earthquake vs. 8 HP / 0 Def Ninetales: 291-343 (100.6 - 118.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO (Life Orb especially necessary here)
n.b. The primary differences between Torterra and this Meganium are being able to outspeed Taunt Rocks Barb and everything slower, being able to reflect entry hazards and other annoying moves that leads carry, and more effectively luring in Pokemon like Zebstrika, Ninetales, Probopass and Pawniard (no one would switch in one of these threats in against Torterra for fear of being hit with a STAB Earthquake, whereas Earthquake just isn't expected on Meganium).
Another fun set I have for Meganium is standard with Counter:
Counter Meganium
Meganium @ Leftovers
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Dragon Tail
- Counter
- Synthesis
- Giga Drain
This is pretty much standard Meganium, but with a twist; Max defense Meganium with Counter over Toxic bops most physical threats that try to hit with an SE attack. For example, Jumpluff's Acrobatics is returned as an OHKO after SR. Rapidash's Charcoal boosted Flare Blitz does not OHKO thanks to Meganium's Bulk, and so Counter secures the KO there as well.
Monferno can only KO those threats with the inferior Grass Knot, which Monferno doesn't really have the space for on its lead set of Taunt / Stealth Rock / Endeavor / Overheat.tldr use monferno
No I mean because of all the calcs with Meganium beating golem and barb and stuff. Don't use it over Happy Dino, use over GolemMonferno can only KO those threats with the inferior Grass Knot, which Monferno doesn't really have the space for on its lead set of Taunt / Stealth Rock / Endeavor / Overheat.
Even if you were using Grass Knot Monferno, it doesn't break focus sash or sturdy (unlike Bullet Seed).
Shouldn't the second set have sub over dark pulse? It's more consistent activation and dark pulse doesn't really hit anything. For that matter, I'd consider giga drain over flamethrower because the only pure steel type to wall that is Klang and you otherwise cant hit Golem at all.
Seviper @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Venoshock / Sludge Wave
- Flamethrower
- Giga Drain
- Final Gambit
The only reason to use venoshock is if you have a toxic spike user or you know you are going to face a toxic orb Ursaring. Main calcs are as follows:
252 SpA Seviper Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Pawniard: 222-262 (96.1 - 113.4%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Seviper Giga Drain vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Solid Rock Carracosta: 288-342 (81.8 - 97.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Final Gambit is there because no one will see it coming and just in case you can't kill a major threat with seviper's move set but the opponent's pokemon has 287 or less HP left.
Seviper @ Salac Berry
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Belch
- Giga Drain
- Dark Pulse
- Flamethrower
Honestly, not the best set. Realistically you're only going to use this set just for Belch. Also, starf berry can be used for luck or Petaya Berry for a SpA boost. Feel free to adjust the EVs accordingly to your berry choice. Main calcs are as follows:
252 SpAtk Seviper Belch vs. 248 HP/252+ SpDef Eviolite Togetic: 152 - 182 (48.6 - 58.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO from 80%
+1 252 SpAtk Seviper Belch vs. 248 HP/252+ SpDef Eviolite Togetic: 228 - 270 (72.8 - 86.3%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO from 80%
Edit: Will test it out and be back with results.
It probably should. I just don't want to take the time and effort and then not be able to sweep because of (insert ghosty type here). So...dark pulse it was.Shouldn't the second set have sub over dark pulse? It's more consistent activation and dark pulse doesn't really hit anything. For that matter, I'd consider giga drain over flamethrower because the only pure steel type to wall that is Klang and you otherwise cant hit Golem at all.
I don't really see how this set lures in any of the pokemon you mention especially since all the mons you did calcs for get OHKO or 2HKOd by Hydro Pump. I also don't see the sense in running 56 Attack and a positive nature in Attack if the only mon Lapras OHKOs with Drill Run is Raichu which it needs hazards to guarentee.
Lapras @ Expert Belt
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 64 HP / 56 Atk / 252 SpA / 136 Spe
Lonely Nature
- Freeze-Dry
- Hydro Pump
- Roar / Heal Bell
- Drill Run
This set is mostly a lure in for Pokemon such as Raichu, Zebstrika, Pawniard etc. and is a pretty solid offensive Pokemon in general. Freeze Dry / Hydro Pump gives it perfect coverage, and Drill Run allows it hit take out Raichu and do mass damage to other Pokemon. 136 speed allows Lapras to outspeed Armaldo, Golem, Marowak, and Wigglytuff. 56 Attack with Expert Belt and boosting nature guarantees a kill on Raichu after rocks damage. I put the rest in Soecial Attack and HP to still hit pretty had as well as being as bulky as possible.
Additional Note: Roar can phase out Set-Up Sweepers as well as take on Smash Pass reliably, and Heal Bell can heal your teams but more specifically Lapras's Status.
56+ Atk Expert Belt Lapras Drill Run vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Pawniard: 127-151 (54.9 - 65.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
56+ Atk Expert Belt Lapras Drill Run vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Raichu: 230-271 (88.1 - 103.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
56+ Atk Expert Belt Lapras Drill Run vs. 172 HP / 0 Def Probopass: 206-245 (67.7 - 80.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
56+ Atk Expert Belt Lapras Drill Run vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zebstrika: 206-245 (70.7 - 84.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
I considered posting this in the other sets i posted, but I don't see the merit of running Signal Beam on Walrein as Grass-types are already hit super effectively by Ice Beam, plus Psychic- and Dark-types already get hit by STAB Surf. If anything, I think Frost Breath should be used over Signal Beam as it can help with Calm Mind users while also getting STAB and always getting a critical hit is nice.
Walrein @ Choice Specs
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 160 HP / 252 SpA / 96 Spe
Modest Nature
- Ice Beam
- Surf
- Signal Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]
Walrein, as stated above by Tone is outclassed by most Water and Ice Types which is kinda amazing due to its solid stats. Walrein has pretty solid Bulk as well as okay Offensive Presence and meh speed. It's Movepool is Shallow in comparison to Pokemon like Simipour and Lapras, but can still do an okay job in the Metagame. 96 speed allows it to outspeed Golem, Armaldo, Marowak, and Wigglytuff. Max Special Attack is mostly for damage with the Choice Specs. Surf and Ice Beam are self explanatory STAB Moves. Signal Beam and Ice Beam help take on Grass Types and Hidden Power Electric helps take on Water Types.
