A long time ago, back when DPP was the current gen, and there was no team preview, the above question was often asked. You had to be prepared for anything in that last slot and use your deductive team building skills to figure out just what your opponent was saving in the back. Still today, we can use these skills to better build our own teams! When building, there will be times when you have 5 perfect Pokemon--mons that fit together so well that you just can't seem to pick a final Pokemon. Or, sometimes you have a crippling weakness to a major threat and can't think of a Pokemon that will cover it that fits the team. This project aims to let the community figure out what the best last Pokemon would be for a given team of five.
How This Will Work
After the last cycle ends there will be a 1-2 day period before the next cycle is posted. However during the cycles, you guys will then post suggestions for the final Pokemon (guidelines to posts below). Until Thursday, as well as posting their thoughts on the last Pokemon, users can kindly critique the sets of others, though this is not mandatory. Once the voting period starts around the end of the 5th day the cycle has been posted, people will choose the last Pokemon that they think fits the rest of the team best (guidelines to voting below). At the end of the round, the Pokemon with the most votes will be the winner! The team will be archived in the Hall of Fame, and the user who suggested the set will have his or her name alongside the team.

Rules & Guidlines
1. Standard Monotype forum + Smogon rules apply; that means no flaming or antagonizing please.

2. No one-liners please; ideally, your post should have 2-3 lines and it must contain a set.
  • Your post should explain the Pokemon's role in the team, why you chose it, and the moveset.
  • When providing feedback on others' sets, be kind!
3. Do not slash moves on your sets. If you have an alternative, eg: Hydro Pump over Scald, mention it in your explanation, but do not slash it.

4. You must only submit one nomination.

5. Do not change the team's members nor movesets.

6. Feedback on sets as mentioned in #2 is reccomended, so long as it is constructive and you explain why any changes you think someone should make is optimal (as in, provide some proof).

7. Do not vote for your own nomination.

8. You are allowed to post the same Pokemon as someone else, however the set must be very different to theirs. Copying the exact same set but just changing the EVs or item is not "very different", and unless you change it, your post will not be counted.

9. Reservations are allowed; just make sure you do them! Also, please mention what set you plan to use so that if someone else wants to reserve the same Pokemon with a different set, they can.

10. Do not change the set of a submitted Pokemon once voting starts.

If you have any further questions, or if you would like to submit a team for a future round, you may contact by vming me on Smogon or pming me on Pokemon Showdown.

Cycle 1: Electric

Bold Nature

- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Description:
Tapu Koko I'm running the basic LO set, with U-Turn to allow it to pivot out no matter what (as opposed to risking a Ground type from stopping you). Raichu is the basic LO Sweeper set with 29 HP to take less recoil from Life Orb, with Psychic to 2KO Mega Venusaur, and Surf/Grass Knot coverage to help tremendously against Ground teams in general (especially in checking Excadrill). Golem is given a Choice Band to further abuse its insane wallbreaking prowess, with Stealth Rock being able to set up on predicted pivots (since if you think about it, Electric doesn't rely too much on SR, but it is there for the purpose of extra chip damage, s/o Sabella for the set). Lastly there's the generic Rotom-Dos core, Zapdos in particular tailored to check Breloom who is a considerable threat to the team otherwise.

Posting Deadline: Saturday, January 8th
Voting Deadline: Tuesday, January 10th

Xurkitree @ Psychium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Hypnosis
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]

The team lacked a win condition and also didn't have a zmove user so i think this set would be optimal. The risk/reward of hitting Hypnosis definitely worth taking as it gets you to +1 speed and gives an opportunity to set up Tail Glow. Timid is chosen to outspeed neutral spe 150s and scarfers like hoopa and the occasional bulu.

Also, ik I forgot to mention this when editing the OP, but it would be awesome if you could say what set your reserving for what the Pokemon you set a reservation for (this is so that a Pokemon can be used twice w/o risking the same set being posted, ex: Z-Hypnosis Xurkitree, or Physically Biased LO Thundurus).

Luxray

Luxray @ Choice Band
Ability: Guts
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Wild Charge
- Superpower
- Quick Attack
- Crunch

In gen 6 normal vs electric was an insane matchup that was nearly impossible for electric to beat. While electric doesn't face the trouble against normal like it did in gen 6 it certainly isn't an easy matchup. Luxray can ohko almost any normal type pokemon with Banded Superpower and Wild Charge for Staraptor. Aside from helping beat normal luxray also helped in matchups such as Psychic because of its Crunch. Luxray can run max speed but it loses lots of bulk in the process so typical running max hp helps it take almost any 1 attack then dish out some serious damage. Quick Attack can help Luxray sweep late game when the opponents team is less than 20% and can generally pick off most weakened pokemon. While Luxray certainly isn't as necessary on Gen 7 electric as gen 6 it is never the less still a great addition to any Electric type team.

Choice Scarf Xurkitree

Cableman Sam (Xurkitree) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Energy Ball
- Hidden Power [Ice]
The team lacked a good source of speed when Terrain isn't in play. I felt that Choice Scarf Xurkitree would help alleviate this problem, as it sits at a good enough speed tier to abuse a Choice Scarf. The combination of Volt Switch and Thunderbolt allow it to either pivot out or stay in, depending on the circumstances. It may even be a good late-game sweeper thanks to Beast Boost, and its sky-high Special Attack lets it dent, if not KO, any target that doesn't resist it. Energy Ball allows it to hit Ground types which are immune to its STAB moves. Hidden Power Ice lets it hit Ground types like Gliscor and Landorus as well as Dragon types hat resist all of its other moves. Alternatively, Dazzling Gleam would allow it to hit Dragon types more efficiently than Hidden Power Ice, but since Tapu Koko has Dazzling Gleam as well, I decided to forego this.

generic electric

Choice Banded Electivire:

Electivire @ Choice Band
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wild Charge
- Earthquake
- Cross Chop
- Ice Punch
The team lacked a reliable physical attacker and hence electivire is used as it possess a passable speed with a good attack stat and good coverage moves. Electivire was chosen because it deals with fat walls that normally wall electric mono teams such as chansey and porygon2, choice band turns electivire into a good wallbreaker making it difficult to switch into its attack. Some Calculations:
252 Atk Choice Band Electivire Cross Chop vs. 4 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 416-490 (64.7 - 76.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Electivire Cross Chop vs. 252 HP / 120 Def Eviolite Porygon2: 202-238 (54 - 63.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Wild charge and ice punch form a pseudo bolt-beam combo that hits many types for at least neutral damage. and ice punch also hits slower dragon types hard.Cross-chop is used for bulky normal types that mostly wall the hell of electric mono teams. Earthquake is a filler move that hits opposing electric types and pokemon that are weak to it very hard with a choice band. For the ability vital spirit is used so that it can switch in on spore and sleep powder(mainly helps vs breloom)

Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Superpower
- Knock Off
- U-turn / Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

The team lacked a second physical attacker, that would be able to hit mons like diggersby, ferrothorn, cradily, and other ground types that golem has trouble hitting. This team has a very hard time vs ferrothorn especially. Also something that doesnt get choice locked into stealth rocks as a physical attacker is nice. Superpower for the obvious chansey pory defensive core, knock off for utility. The 3rd move can be switched around depending on if u like gaining momentum, which is especially useful for a team that has electric surge with it, or the other option is thunderbolt which can catch walls like skarmory, slowbro, staraptor, celesteela, mandibuzz, and more, off guard. Thunder Wave although with its 10% decrease in accruacy, is a great way to stop mons like QD volcarona from sweeping the team entirely, as well as nihilego.

Adamant Nature

- Stone Edge

Description: This team is built around the amazing defensive trio of Mantine, Skarmory and Zapdos which wall a huge chunk of the metagame considerably making the team harder to defeat. Mantine is the teams defogger which allows Zapdos to run more versatile sets. Skarmory is the teams hazard setter and phaser to prevent the team from losing to common setup sweepers such as Landorus-T, Dragonite, Pinsir etc. Zapdos runs 64 speed so it can successfully outspeed max speed Magearna without a shift gear boost and common base 70 adamant pokemon such as Breloom and Bisharp. Charizard Y is the teams main special wallbreaker that is extremely dangerous in sun and runs Focus Blast so it isn't completely walled by Heatran. Finally Landorus-T is the teams setup sweeper. What's My Last?

Posting Deadline: Friday January 27, 12 PM EST
Voting Period January 28-30 12 PM EST

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Superpower

Dnite benefits this team numerous ways. The team lacked a physical wallbreaker to pair with zard, it's another electric neutrality, it provides priority for a relatively slow team, and helps break through opposing defensive cores.
