========

Steam Eruption is one of Volcanion's strongest and most reliable attacks, sporting 110 Base Power and 95% accuracy. Using it is a great way for Volcanion to wear down its initial checks due to the 30% chance to burn them. Fire Blast provides coverage for Grass-type Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Mega Sceptile that might try to switch in on Steam Eruption. Flamethrower is a more reliable alternative due to it being perfectly accurate. However, it is significantly weaker; (period->semicolon) for example, Fire Blast is able to OHKO Amoonguss and Mega Sceptile after Stealth Rock, but Flamethrower is unable to do so. Sludge Bomb provides Volcanion with a reliable way to hit Pokemon such as Azumarill and Primarinawhile also hitting Hydreigon and Latias for neutral damage. The additional 30% chance to poison foes aids it when cleaning up teams. Earth Power gives Volcanion the ability to hit Pokemon such as Tentacruel, Empoleon, and opposing Volcanion for super effective damage. Toxic is a good way for Volcanion to cripple initial responses to it such as Latias, Hydreigon, and Mantine. Sludge Wave is a slightly stronger alternative to Sludge Bomb and is also useful if you would rather use Toxic on something and not want to risk poisoning it via Sludge Bomb.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Special Attack EVs are given so Volcanion can hit as hard as possible. A Timid nature is required on this set because without it, Volcanion would be slower than Pokemon such as Mega Pidgeot. Its only ability is Water Absorb, which is useful considering it has to be able to check Pokemon such as Azumarill and Primarina, so being immune to their Water-type STAB moves is appreciated.

Usage Tips
========

Given how naturally strong Volcanion is, this set has a great deal of flexibility with how it can be played. It can be used early-game to weaken threats with its strong STAB moves or cripple them with its coverage and Toxic. Don't try to use Volcanion as a consistent response to Pokemon like Scizor because it's just going to get worn down quickly by U-turn and Stealth Rock. However, due to its bulk and typing, it is a serviceable switch-in to Azumarill and Primarina. It's generally best to consider using Toxic early-game, since a lot of Pokemon like Gliscor (which is commonly used at the beginning of battles) get forced out by this set, which provides you with an opportunity to cripple their initial response. Additionally, it can be used as a late-game cleaner due to it outpacing most of the unboosted metagame. Do not let Volcanion lose its item; otherwise its effectiveness becomes pretty lackluster, considering it badly needs the Speed boost that Choice Scarf provides.

Team Options
========

Pursuit wielding Pokemon such as Alolan Muk and Choice Scarf Krookodile are the best partners for Volcanion, and that's simply because of how common Latias is as the initial and sometimes only response to Volcanion. Entry hazard removers are essential to ensure Volcanion can come in as many times as possible. Latias, Empoleon, and Tentacruel are good examples of entry hazard removers that can beat checks to Volcanion. Pokemon that are capable of luring Pokemon such as Blissey and Snorlax make for good partners; examples of this are Superpower Hydreigon and Superpower Nidoking. Ground-types like Hippowdon and Seismitoad are great partners because they can beat Electric-types like Mega Manectric and Rock-types like Mega Aerodactyl, which can give Volcanion problems. Grass-types such as Amoonguss and Mega Sceptile are good partners because they can switch into the likes of Mantine and Rotom-W without much trouble and beat them. Amoonguss is capable of luring Latias with Spore, which gives Volcanion a lot more freedom to function. Electric-type Pokemon like Mega Manectric and Raikou are great partners because they can punish Water-types as well as bring Volcanion in safely with Volt Switch. Rotom-W is a good partner, since it actually has pretty good offensive and defensive synergy with Volcanion, and Rotom-W can also clear hazards for Volcanion. Fairy-types are great ways of beating the Dragon-type checks like Latias and Hydreigon that Volcanion usually has. Therefore, Mega Altaria, Klefki, and Sylveon are good partners for it. Klefki gets a special mention because Spikes really help Volcanion punish switching. Sylveon can pass Wishes to Volcanion to ensure it doesn't get worn down too much by Stealth Rock.

  • Provide some examples for the cases in which Flamethrower would not be ideal. For example, Flamethrower never OHKOes Amoonguss or Mega Sceptile after Stealth Rock. Fire Blast has a 70%-ish chance for both.
  • Mention in Sludge Wave that the lowered poison chance can be useful in situations when you would rather Toxic something than poison it regularly, like Mantine or Suicune.
Team Options
  • Electric-types deserve a mention, because they can beat bulky Waters and also can bring it in with Volt Switch.
  • Krookodile is a bad example here because it doesn't even beat Terrakion or Mega Aerodactyl, since it just gets smacked by Close Combat and Aqua Tail for both. Replace it with Swampert or Seismitoad, these two also check Mega Manectric more reliably as well. edit: just removing terrakion
  • One mention in the Blissey and Snorlax line is weird, you could probably also mention Superpower Nidoking here.
  • Mention that Sylveon can also pass Wishes into Volcanion to help with Stealth Rock wearing it down.
QC 1/3, nice work
