Venusaur [QC 2/3]

Approved by Lolk

Overview
#######

Venusaur has many things going for it in Doubles. Chlorophyll, natural bulk, and a great typing combination in Grass- and Poison-type that gives it great offensive typing and 5 resists to common attacking types, as well as an immunity to Powder moves. All of this adds up to one of the more prominent Sun abuses in the tier. Venusaur also has access to Sleep Powder, which at first glace doesn't look at appealing as it should. Doubles is a tier that has no Sleep Clause, meaning that it can put as many things to sleep as it wants to. Be wary tho as Sleep Powder's accuracy is something to be desired. It should also be mentioned that with access to a Mega, Venusaur can be used in more than one way. Mega Venusaur is a very bulky Pokemon that isn't used much, but definitely shouldn't be overlooked when team building. Finally, in Doubles there is many Fire-type Pokemon that directly threaten Venusaur, but don't let the stop you from using it.

Special Attacker
########

Name: Special Attacker
Move 1: Sludge Bomb
Move 2: Giga Drain
Move 3: Sleep Powder
Move 4: Protect
Ability: Chlorophyll
Item: Life Orb
EVs: 112 HP / 252 SpA / 144 Spe
Nature: Modest

Moves
=======

Sludge bomb is going to be the main STAB on the set. Giving Venusaur a way to hit Poison-types and anything that resists it's Grass-type STAB. Giga Drain gives it a way to heal off damage its taken while simultaneously doing plenty of damage to the opponent. Sleep Powder may seem like an odd decision to some, but the lack of Sleep Clause in Doubles makes it a very appealing move for Venusaur to have. Protect may seem redundant when you only have limited turns for Sun, but it's always a very good move choice on an offensive Pokemon.

Set Details
=======

The given EV spread makes it so Venusaur is the fastest Pokemon in the tier when Sun is up, allowing it to even be faster than the most common Choice Scarf users. 144 speed also allows Venusaur to outrun certain Pokemon without Sun, such as Heatran. Modest paired with max Special Attack is so Venusaur can hit as hard as it possibly can, even utilizing Life Orb to further boost its damage output. Finally the rest of the EVs go into HP, giving it some longevity in the battle.

Usage Tips
=======

You should always be using Venusaur while Sun is up if it's possible. Its main STAB attacks are going to be putting a lot of pressure on the opponent and even more so while Sun is active. Sleep Powder can also be used at any moment during the game to put the opponent to sleep as many times as you want. Another thing Venusaur is really good at is bullying opposing Grass-type Pokemon. Breloom and Amoonguss will be looking for free Spore's, but Venusaur can switch in as many times as it wants and take no damage, but directly threaten them back. It's best to use Venusaur in the early game, letting it wear down the opposing team or even put them to Sleep, so it makes it easier for a Pokemon to clean up in the late game.

Team Options
=======

The best partner for Venusaur to be paired wiit is Mega Charizard-y. Charizard will be able to do two things that this set really needs to have happen for it to succeed. The first being set up sun, and the second is removing Steel-type Pokemon that Venusaur can't otherwise touch. Fire-type Pokemon in general make for good partners, as Venusaur will struggle against Steel-types. Pokemon with access to Powerful Ground-type STAB that can remove Heatran are also a good idea. Heatran hard walls Charizard-y and Venusaur. Finally, Dragon-types resists all 4 STABs between Charizard-y and Venusaur, so something to take care of them is needed. Mamsowine deserves a special mention here as it fills both the 2 previous roles listed in one Pokemon.

Mega Venusaur
########

Name: Mega Venusaur
Move1: Sludge Bomb
Move2: Giga Drain
Move3: Sleep Powder /Leech Seed
Move4: Protect / Synthesis
Ability: Chlorophyll
Item: Venusaurite
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Def / 44 SpA / 80 SpD
Nature: Modest

Moves
========

Sludge Bomb is Venusaur's most Powerful STAB, and allows you to hit Fairy-type Pokemon For super effective damage. Giga Drain is the secondary STAB on the set, giving Venusaur recovery while attacking. Sleep Powder gives it a supporting option for it's teammates and allows it to abuse the lack of sleep clause. Protect allows Venusaur to protect from super effective damage while teammates deal with the problem.

Set Details
========

The EV spread allows Mega Venusaur to live attacks such as Adamant Brave Bird from LO Talonflame and Psychic from LO Latios. Venusaur is naturally very bulky so it can afford to not run max HP EVs. Maximizing it's special attack allows Venusaur to hit as hard as possible.

Usage Tips
========

Mega Venusaur is very bulky, has a great defensive ability and good defensive typing to pair with that ability. Don't be scared to let it take some hits because it can live them. Sleep Powder is a great asset to Mega Venusaur as it can put anything it wants to sleep and directly threaten Grass-type Pokemon who attempt to absorb the Sleep. Mega Venusaur can also be used to bully Grass-type Pokemon trying to put your teammates to sleep and can walls Pokemon like Breloom and Amoonguss; it creates a lot of free turns for your teammates if you can use it correctly, such as free subs for Pokemon like Heatran and Aegislash or a Dragon Dance for something like Gyarados.

Team Options
========

Steel-type Pokemon such as Aegislash, and Heatran are able to set up on Mega Venusaur's weaknesses in Flying- and Psychic-types, Fighting-type Pokemon such as Terrakion, Conkeldurr, and Keldeo are also good teammates for Venusaur as they can remove Steel-type Pokemon such as Heatran who Venusaur can't damage. Terrakion also has the ability to remove Mega Charizard-y from the field which directly threatens Mega Venusaur even with Thick Fat as it's ability, Mamoswine, and other Pokemon that can remove Dragon-types such as Latios and Latias are always welcomed; Rotom-w, and Landorus-t are good partners as they can deal with Pokemon that directly threaten Venusaur such as Talonflame and Heatran.

Other Options
========

Earthquake and Growth are two interesting options for Venusaur to run; Earthquake allows it to hit Heatran for super effective damage, while growth gives you a +2 stat boost in sun. Wide Lens could be used to raise the accuracy of Sleep Powder. Hidden Power Fire can be used to hit Scizor, and Ferrothorn as well as other Steel-types; Hidden Power Ground can also be used to hit Heatran and is a better option than EQ in some cases.

Checks and Counters
========

**Offensive Typing Advantage**: Two of the most common Pokemon in the tier, Charizard-Y and Heatran, are both Fire-type and can use their powerful STAB to scare Venusaur.

** Defensive Typing Advantage**: Since Venusaur only runs it's two STAB moves, it has no way to hit Steel-type for any damage other than Giga Drain. It can put them to sleep but nothing will happen other than that.

** Speed Control**: Pokemon like Thundurus and Cresselia aren't going to take much from Venusaur, and they will be able to slow it down with Thunder Wave and Icy Wind respectively, making chlorophyll less of a factor in the battle.

**Opposing Weather**: Venusaur wants sun up at all times, if the weather war is lost Venusaur's success will be hindered.

**Trick Room**: Since Venusaur is usually on a team that is based around Blitzkreigh sun, but if it does get set up it's basically game over.

** Offensive Type Advantage **: Though Venusaur is usually going to be the fastest Pokemon on the field because of sun, Pokemon such as Talonflame have priority Brave Bird that will shut down Venusaur. Heatran is another pokemon that can be problematic for it, as both of it's STABs do nothing and Heatran will OHKO in return. Kyurem-b also has the ability to shut down Venusaur in both forms with the use of Sub + Ice beam
