Approved by King UU and Hogg
Inspired after MrAldo's OU Teambuilding Competition and Euphonos's and Hogg's Iron Chef

From coast to coast, city to city, town to town, country to country, and continent to continent, several talented amateur cooks lined up to take part in the most intense team building competition on Smogon. They will compete to win for bragging rights, to see their name and team etched in the Hall of Fame, and to become the first member ever to go from an amateur cook to MasterChef. They will compete under extraordinary pressure; all are facing challenges designed to stretch their creativity, test their palette, and prove they can cook a meal of a lifetime. They'll learn how tough it is to feed an army, and as the competition heats up, most of them will go down in flames. And after weeks of sweating, slicing and dicing, glorious victories, and epic failures, one of them will become the first MasterChef.

Hello, everybody! Welcome to the very first season of Smogon MasterChef in the Underused forum! This is a team building competition where you have to showcase your team building knowledge and skills after you have participated in numerous projects in the Underused Subforum, such as Matchmaking, Next Best Thing, and Iron Chef. This competition contains ten cycles good for one week each, and each cycle contains a mystery box inspired after certain Underused Projects. The team builder who have accumulated the most points after ten cycles will be declared as the first ever MasterChef!

. . . . . . .

GENERAL MECHANICS

Entry Submissions
(5 days)
- Each week, the chairman will select a core, set or Pokemon to build around, chosen from one of the many ongoing projects.
- Participants have five days to build a team around that core. It is mandatory to include three replays, edited into the post.
- In order to sign up for each cycle, participants must post their teams in hide tags.
- Teams must be original; plagiarized teams will be deleted and the poster will be potentially infracted.
- Do not change your team or sets after your original post for each cycle. Edits to the team are not permitted.
- As such, the replays must show the team in question, including any edits or tweaks. If there are discrepancies between the replays and the team in the importable, the team will be disqualified.

Community Voting (2 days)
The Underused Community is asked to pick two of the best teams that meet these conditions:
  • Creativity: The most creative and daring dish among the bunch!
  • Essence / Elevation: The dish that most perfectly represents the theme for that cycle, including standing out the most thanks to the last Pokemon.
  • Effectiveness: The dish that will be the most effective in the metagame!
The top three teams for the cycle will be announced, and the winning team will be etched into the Hall of Fame!

. . . . . . .

MASTER CHEF MECHANICS
BONUS STAGE
  • Become the Master Chef by placing well across multiple cycles.
  • Placing in the top 3 in a cycle earns you overall points. The participant with the most overall points across all cycles will be named the Master Chef.
  • There can only be one Master Chef - so get out there and start cooking!
All users are allowed to participate in Community Voting. The criteria for scoring based on the community votes are as follows:
  1. Creativity - 25%
  2. Essence / Elevation - 25%
  3. Effectiveness - 50%
  • The top pick will be awarded 5 points; the second top pick will be awarded 3 points; the rest of the teams will be awarded 1 point each.
  • The points coming from community votes will be averaged, and then be multiplied by the percentages as shown in the criteria.
  • After TEN cycles, the user with the most amount of points earned will be declared the winner as UU's first Master Chef.

After looking at the three or so viable N mons, I decided to go with Nidoqueen as a bulky rocker and ground-type wallbreaker. Next, I decided to add Hone Claws Durant, an underrated pokemon that can break walls like Cresselia. It also appreciates Nidoqueen's ability to destroy bulky steel and fire types. Since Nidoqueen and Durant can both handle fairies pretty well, I figured that Mega Absol would be a great addition to the team. It deals with Sableye and gives me another sweeper and a Knock Off user. The team needed a ground immunity and a way to break bulky waters, so I added specs Rotom-Mow. Signal Beam can lure Hydreigon, Sceptile, and Celebi. The squad was looking weak to dragons such as Hydreigon and Sceptile, so I knew I needed a fairy with some decent special bulk. Gardevoir is a fairy that starts with a G, so it was the clear choice. Finally, I wanted hazard control and a check to Mega Aerodactyl and Mamoswine. I chose regular Blastoise because it is not weak to EQ unlike Tentacruel. It patches up the team's fire weakness. Refresh helps Blastoise stay healthy by healing burns from Scald or Sacred Fire.

I built this HO with the starting Fossil Core: Archeops and Tyrantrum. I could pick Aerodactyl for the Suicide Lead role, but I like Archeops because it has Endeavor, what is very useful to take down at least one Pokémon with it. Tyrantrum is the second member of this core, and it can just wreck everything without many issues, Head Smash hits like a truck and it's other STABs are ridiculously good, not to mention Superpower, useful move that can hit Steel-Types. Chesto Resto + Tailwind Suicune looks garbage at a first glance, but how the team has 0 defensive answers to Entei, this Item is essential. Whimsicott is another Tailwind user that can defeat stuff like Gyarados, what is essential for this team too, since I'm lacking HP Electric in Cune and Ampharos is defeated by Earthquake at +1. Whimsicott can defeat Bulky Teams when paired with Ampharos too, since they do a good VoltTurn Core. Doublade is here to check Fighting-Types that can sweep me, like Lucario, Toxicroak and Cobalion, it is also the only answer to Snorlax. Ampharos is a glue to this team, since the entire team sucks to Suicune. Dragon Spam + Tailwind Spam is just epic and you can abuse of it with ease.

Entei @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Extreme Speed
- Stone Edge
- Flare Blitz

Went with the suggested sets for Nidoqueen and Hydreigon, giving Nidoqueen enough speed to creep Modest Sylveon. Since both pokemon are special attackers, I decided to use a NastyPass Celebi to boost their power. Celebi has enough speed to outrun Krook and enough SpDef to switch into Life Orb Heliolisk. Shuca SD Cobalion gives the team another sweeper and a check to Hydreigon, Beedrill, Aero, and Snorlax. Stone Edge helps versus Gyarados and Mence (which wasn't banned yet when the round went up). Mega Blastoise gives the team a tanky fire check and hazard remover, as well as a third potential Baton Pass recipient. EVs creep Jolly Crawdaunt. With Blastoise's reliable spinning, I felt free to add banded Entei to help against Sableye, Cresselia, and Florges. It completes a FWG core and provides some strong priority as well.

Tornadus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Superpower
- Heat Wave
- Tailwind

Used standard banded Krookodile and defensive Tentacruel, but I gave Tentacruel enough speed to outrun Adamant Mamo. Acid Spray helps deter setup and supports my special attackers. Next I added Specs Kyurem, an amazing breaker that works very well with Krookodile, since Krook can trap checks like Bronzong. Timid > Modest because I was scared of opposing Krook and Entei. The team was looking weak to Slurpuff and needed a rocker, so I added Mega Aggron. Thunder Wave can help slow down stuff since I don't have a scarfer. Whimsicott helps patch up weaknesses to Hydreigon, Mega Pert, Gyarados, and Cune. Finally, the newly ascended Tornadus joins the team, giving me another strong mixed breaker that can deal big damage to fighting types such as Cobalion and Conk. Tailwind allows one of my powerhouses to clean up versus offense in the late game.

Went with stall (sorry Euphonos). Decided to go with HP Electric Quagsire to counter Gyarados. Added Blissey because she's the only Sylveon counter in the game besides Bastiodon. Protect Blissey may look random, but it's the only way to avoid having to win Pursuit 50/50's versus banded Krook and then being unable to switch into specs Sylv. I realized that Quag counters the fighting mons that run anti-fairy STAB (Toxicroak and Cobalion), so I decided to use physically defensive Sylveon to handle the rest. Sylveon also helps out with Sableye and Haxorus and gives the team a Heal Bell user. Next, I added bulky stallbreaker Hydreigon for a Crawdaunt "counter." It hard counters Sub CM Chandy, the biggest threat to many UU stalls. Hydreigon was also the best Cune answer I could fit. Next, the team needed a Mamoswine switchin. There are only two of them, and Alomomola was the one I chose. Nearly max physdef lets it live certain +2 hits in a pinch. Went with Knock Off in the last slot because every stall team needs a Knock Off user. Finally, I needed a hazard remover as well as an answer to CM Florges and NP Celebi with Dazzling Gleam. Specially defensive Forretress with Pin Missile and Heavy Slam did the trick.

]I decided that the perfect water type partner for banded Crawdaunt would be Sub DD Gyarados. Crawdaunt's main counter, Chesnaught, becomes unable to counter Gyarados once it gets hit with the Switcheroo, so Crawdaunt can put in work regardless of whether the opponent has a Chesnaught. At this point, I realized how annoying Entei would be to the team, even with my two water types. I decided to use Galvantula to get up webs so that Entei couldn't outspeed and burn them. Life Orb Thunder and Bug Buzz help with opposing bulky waters and Celebi. Volt Switch can help get the crab in versus a special wall. Next, I needed rocks and a bulky ground type, so Nidoqueen was the obvious pick. I then added Doublade to spinblock and check Aero. Doublade is running an insane amount of speed, allowing it to outspeed Umbreon without webs and Timid Sylveon / Adamant MegaPert with webs. Finally, the team desperately needed a Hydreigon check, so I added specs Sylveon. I prefer Modest over Timid on most teams, but Timid outspeeds Cobalion with webs up.

I went with a CM 3 attacks Delphox set that can bust through a lot of Celebi, Tentacruel, and Conk cores. My Delphox set can't touch Hydreigon, so Lucario was a good partner, setting up on Hydreigon and taking advantage of Delphox's wallbreaking. At this point, it became obvious that hyper offense was the way to continue, so I added regular Aerodactyl, the best Taunt lead in the game, to get up rocks and keep them off for Delphox. Aerodactyl is running Stone Edge in an attempt to lure Crobat that expect the standard Double-Edge set. Next, the team was looking weak to SD Doublade, so I added sash Crawdaunt. I wanted another setup sweeper that could take on fairies and create setup opportunities versus bulkier teams, so Sleep Powder Venomoth was next. Finally, the team needed a Gyarados check and a Suicune check. Mega Sceptile can get up a sub versus +1 sub DD Gyarados (the extra defense EV stops Waterfall from breaking most of the time) and also adds some more raw speed.

I started by checking if any of the letters would restrict me in choice of Pokémon regarding diversity. "G" only has 4 eligible abilities, Grass pelt and Gooey being completely useless even on Gogoat and Goodra, and i refuse to use an ability on a 'mon that always is the inferior choice. I was left with Gale Wings and Guts, and while Linda is cool Guts gave me the most options to choose from.

Conkeldurr was my first pick out of all possible Guts users, simply because it is amazing right now. The BU set is incredibly difficult for standard-ish balance builds to deal with and it has the potential to single-handedly dismantle stall. However, Conkeldurr is slow and is susceptible to a number of threats including but not limited to Choice Specs Sylveon, Nasty Plot Celebi, LO Tornadus and offensive Crobat. In other words: I needed a Steel type.

I checked the list of Steel Pokémon that have an eligible ability and found Metagross and Registeel with Clear Body. I needed a solid check to all of the aforementioned threats, and considering that they are commonly paired with CB Krookodile, I decided to go with the bulkier route and picked Registeel, which isn't easily trapped by Krook, especially if it runs Protect. Still, Registeel has no recovery outside of Leftovers so I decided to pair it with Wish support.

Obviously my first thought was to add support Sylveon to the team, but since Cute Charm is just a gimmick compared to Pixilate, I decided to stand by my principle of not using inferior abilities. Additionally I already had a Pokémon with an ability that starts with the letter "C". I found Aromatisse, which can act as a Wish passer, has a cleric option in Aromatherapy and possesses the ability Aroma Veil, which happened to fulfill another criteria of the challenge, so I went with it. At this point the team was rather slow and still needed hazard control. I did what I always find myself doing in this scenario and ...

... added Crobat. Not only does Crobat add another letter to the mix with its ability Infiltrator; it also helps to relieve pressure from Aromatisse as the sole Fighting check, adds a Ground immunity and most importantly gives me an option to outspeed and pressure NP Celebi. When I checked the team for weaknesses, I discovered a noticeable weakness to Fire; Entei would be a real pain to face. Additionally, Gyarados just plowed through the team.

Milotic gives this team a solid answer to Entei, Mega Swampert, Mamoswine and Gyarados, as well as stopping any set up attempts with Haze. Milotic's ability, Marvel Scale, also completed the challenge to spell MAGIC with the first letters of 5 out of the 6 abilities on the team. At last I was able to pick a wildcard for the team, that would help to fix its last few issues.

It was no easy choice but I ultimately decided on Choice Scarf Hydreigon. It gave me another Ground immunity and good type resistances all around (especially for Electric and Ghost), speed control to revenge kill faster threats like Mega Aerodactyl and a reasonably hard hitter from the special side.

And there you have it:
... or so you might think.

At this point you might have already noticed that this is not the exact team from the sprites at the very beginning of my post, and it's true: This isn't the final version of the team. I intented to test with this version but The Immortal had already put up the suspect test ladder where Hydreigon was no longer allowed. Since I hadn't tested the team yet and I was planning to get reqs anyway, I decided to modify the team to be eligible on the suspect ladder.

(
) →
(
)

The easiest way to fix the team would have been to chose a different wildcard since I already had a potent "MAGIC" core. And that is indeed what I started with: As a replacement for Hydreigon I decided on Choice Scarf Moxie Krookodile. It doesn't provide as many resistances and isn't as bulky as Hydreigon, but it does give the team an immunity to Electric type attacks, most importantly blocking Volt Switch, and it opens up the possibility of trapping Ghost/Psychic types with Pursuit, which is very much appreciated by Conkeldurr. While Choice Band is the most common item choice on Krookodile, I feel like this team needs the speed that Choice Scarf provides, especially when facing offensive builds, and Moxie can also be a win condition.

I could have stopped after I replaced Hydreigon with Krookodile but I decided to also replace Registeel with Bronzong. The teams sole Ground immunity was now Crobat which I don't like to rely on, particularly because it is weak to Ground when recovering with Roost and because it is the teams hazard control. Bronzong also improves this teams match up versus Mamoswine. I decided to run Protect over an additional coverage move to ease prediction versus Choice locked 'mons, especially CB Krookodile.

(Marvel Scale) →
(
Competitive)

Unfortunately, with the replacement of Registeel and its ability Clear Body, the team now lacked the letter "C". Thankfully Milotic sports a second ability that is just as viable as Marvel Scale (imo), being Competitive. Since I replaced the teams only "hard" special hitter Hydreigon, this ability is actually appreciated because it can boost Milotics solid SpA by two stages when switching in to a predicted Defog or when coming in on a double switch on an Intimidate user (Gyara, Krook and Arcanine for example!). It doesn't happen too often but since a burned or poisoned Milotic doesn't check the 'mons it is supposed to check too well anymore, I found myself using Aromatherapy most of the time anyway.

Finally, here we are with the complete team:

Replay 1: Versus HO; Milotic does a good job walling Gyarados and Scarf Moxie Krookodile cleans.
Replay 2: Versus Bulky Offense; Conkeldurr pressures the opposing team a ton. In the end my opponent fails breaking Aromatisse and dips.
Replay 3: Versus Balance; Once again Conkeldurr does what it does best, only being stopped in its early game sweep by a full paralysis. Sub+CM Chandelure scared me but Milotic deals with it quite handily. Also where do all these Goodra come from?

This core is awkward, but usable. Beedrill and Sylveon make for a very frail offensive core, meaning it is inherently weak to the likes of Entei and Mega Aero, so Slowking patches up those weaknesses defensively, and vice versa.

The thing about this core is, with such a specific set of roles already laid in front of us. Hazard setter, hazard removal, and Dark resist were on the top of the list. When I suggested Slowking in the original Matchmaking thread, I was trying to go for an OU-style bulky offence core, intended to wall and pivot for a few turns and wait for the right opportunity to bring in my breakers. Furthermore, our main powerhouses are both grounded and have terrible physical defence, so I decided to add some more backbone. Thus, I decided with a bulky hazard stack pairing of Swampert and SpDef Forretress, which provide a secondary Fire resist and Rocks, as well as a Fairy resist, Spin, and V-Switch initiative respectively.

Psychics and Steels were looking annoying so I decided to add CB Krook on the end. It also added a 2nd breaker (or 3rd, if you count Beedrill as a breaker). Krook is the offensive engine to the team, abusing the hell out of the momentum generated by Beedrill and Sylveon, as well as the hazard stack provided by Pert and Forry.

After some testing on the ladder, however, this team felt unacceptably weak to Fighting types, Ground types, and Celebi, so I decided to scrap this iteration and start anew. From this team, I learned just how important it is to have a Krook check (that isn't our own Krook) on this kind of BO, as well as how pressed we are for some very particular role compression.

This time around, the first thing I was looking for was a reliable Krook check. Whims and bulky Waters were both out of the question, since the former lacked the staying power I needed, given how frequently Krook can come in, and the latter was defensively redundant alongside Slowking (although as far as Mamo checks go, the more the merrier). Chesnaught fit this bill perfectly, and in this respect is the defensive lynchpin of this team. Also, CM Slowking appreciates not having to worry as much about acting as a Water resist, due to Chesnaught's Water resistance and pressure from Spikes.

Fairies and Flying types, namely Sylveon, Aero, and Crobat were starting to look like massive threats, and we still didn't have Stealth Rock. I considered Registeel for a while, but I ended up choosing Bronzong in the end, deciding that the Ground immunity and marginally greater offensive presence (through Heavy Slam) was worth having a second Dark-weak pivot, since otherwise Nidoking and Nidoqueen turn up.

This last slot ultimately decided the nature of the entire team, so I had to choose wisely. I desperately wanted a third breaker, either CB Krook or Specs Kyurem, since they both appeared on previous iterations of this team. A cleric would have been really nice, as well, but I decided against it due to our clerics' defensive redundancy with Slowking and Sylveon. Furthermore, I couldn't afford a cleric in the first place, since, as you may have noticed, I still lack hazard control. Thus, I chose Tentacruel, since it provided me with a backup resist to Fighting and Fire, as well as the always appreciated T-Spikes. It's a shitty Fire resist, putting a lot of weight on Slowking's shoulders to check the likes of Entei, but I found this acceptable due to the amount of hazard pressure the team now had.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uususpecttest-446213814 -- Gyara gets a lucky flinch (I misplayed though so I deserved it), but I'm able to wear down the biggest threats until he has nothing for Bronzong
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uususpecttest-446209235 -- I manage to choke away an easy win with Slowking, but I'm able to bring it back
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/uususpecttest-446204129 -- Chesnaught shows just how important it is, both reliably walling Krook and wearing down the whole team with hazards.

CYCLE 10: I WRITE SINS, NOT TRAGEDIES
Based on: UU Cores made by Euphonos, with approved entry from LittleRunnerXC

Winner: Lord Esche
Honorable Mentions: cappino (Most Creative); warzoid (co-leading the Most Effective team)
Participants must build a team containing Toxicroak and Houndoom, with both of their sets up to the participants' discretion (with the exception of Houndoom which requires Houndoominite).

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Leaf Storm
- Trick
- Thunderbolt

Mega Houndoom and Toxicroak complement each other very well offensively and also have some neat defensive synergy (absorbing Fire/Water respectively, Houndoom being immune to Psychic and Toxicroak resisting Fighting) but both struggle versus Mega Aerodactyl, get dominated by RD Mega Swampert and unfortunately do not offer the best set of resistances and defenses, making them vulnerable to strong neutral attacks. Thus I decided to add an reliable defensive backbone consisting of specially defensive Forretress, physically defensive Swampert and mixed defensive Sylveon. This core offers Spike stacking and Spin support, Stealth Rock and phazing ability, as well as Wish + Cleric options. Finally, Rotom-Mow holding a Choice Scarf patches up the speed issue of the team, being able to revenge kill threats like Mega Aerodactyl, +1 Gyarados, offensive Crobat and Tornadus. It also acts as a backup check to bulky Waters in case Toxicroak falls victim to an unexpected coverage move like Extrasensory from Suicune.

replay 1: uu room tour game. not much to say here. hate webs.
replay 2: uu room tour game vs warzoid. quite the unfortunate turn of events with toxicroak losing a speed tie and missing gunk shot on his while crit-poisoning my swampert the following turn which could have then prevented the slurpuff sweep with roar but other than that it was a good game. he pulled the trigger when he had to. gg.
replay 3: uu ladder game. i tried finding a good battle that represents the teams strenghts on the ladder for about an hour but need to go to sleep now. in the end this guy timed out but i think croak had it won anyway.

Hello, everyone! The first cycle of the season has begun!

Builders who wish to participate in this cycle, you may now open the (improvised) Mystery Box (for now).

THE PALEOLITHIC AGE!

After opening MasterChef with a bang, it's time to travel back in time and bask in the glory of the prehistoric creatures in that day. While this theme ironically isn't extracted from the past Iron Chef projects, former Chairman and fellow Iron Chef Euphonos wants to bring up a new Iron Chef theme in this MasterChef project.

Players who wish to build a team must feature at least two Pokemon resurrected from a Fossil. The sets of the Pokemon required are blank; therefore, you may use any set at your discretion.

Builders have until
FRIDAY, JULY 22, 11:59 PM EST
to make a team worthy to be etched in the Hall of Fame!

What are you waiting for? Get out there and start cooking!

After checking which Pokemon are eligible for this team, I found out that Pokemon that started with the letter N were a bit scarce in terms of viability, hence starting the team with Choice Specs Noivern. I chose Glalie as the next Pokemon as Steel-types are usually a pain to face on both of them and I aim to overwhelm those Steel-types with attacks that may deem not very effective. I then chose Azelf to serve as a late-game sweeper with Nasty Plot; weakened Steel-types will get obliterated by Fire Blast, paving the way for its STAB Psyshock to deal greater damage. Since a plethora of fast Pokemon would prevent this offensive core to do their duties, I brought out Rotom-Mow to "revenge kill" whenever possible. Finally, I selected Diancie, and Tentacruel (as the wildcard) to provide support to the offensive core by virtue of hazard setting, hazard clearing, and status healing. By the time I finished making this team, I realized that this team literally has no Rock resists, making Tyrantrum and Mega Aerodactyl being a nuisance to the team; but these offensive Pokemon are enough to suffice.

(to be edited)

Once you have posted your team with all the requirements fulfilled, a like from the host will be received, hence its eligibility for community voting. If your team hasn't received a like two days before the deadline, expect me to send a PM stating an element that has yet to fulfill. Good luck, guys!

So I sort of just went down the line, starting with the letter G. Gyarados was a pretty solid pick, allowing me to have a powerful sweeper/wallbreaker against a good portion of the metagame. Waterfall provides for a great STAB while Double Edge allows coverage against most other threats. Rhyperior came next, giving me a way to handle Rock and Electric types that might threaten Gyara out. Up next came M-Abomasnow, a mega I've not really used too much, but provided me some useful things to the team. Special acts as a great switchin for bulky waters, as well as a powerful attacker in general thanks to an undodgeable STAB Blizzard.

At this point options became a little harder. As Euphonos mentioned, there's very little in terms of options for Pokemon starting with N. My initial idea was Natu, but.. let's forget that. Noivern was a long time favorite of mine, so I figured I'd go with that over compounding ground types(spoiler:I failed). Along with the dangerous combination of STAB Draco+Hurricane, Noivern gives me the ability to pivot into an appropriate switchin to its counters. Dugtrio felt like a great pairing for this, as it helps trap a lot of stuff Noivern and Gyara don't like seeing, as well as providing some dangerous prio in Sucker Punch.

Last slot was hardest for me, as it usually is. Unfortunately, this team is pretty weak to Rocks, so I was forced into running a hazard controller. I went with Forretress over Tentacruel to allow me to free both Rhyperior and Dugtrio to act more offensive, as well as give me a Volt-Turn combo with Noivern.

Since this weeks component restricted you to just a handful of (viable) Pokémon, I decided to go an offensive route with the team. Specs Gardevoir is kinda overlooked since Sylveon entered the tier, so I decided to start off with that. Mega Absol was added next, forming an excellent offensive core with Gardevoir and providing a scary win condition with SD. I decided on Superpower over Play Rough to reliably finish off the weakened Steel types that would switch into Gardevoir. The Magic Bounce ability is also very much appreciated because the team lacks hazard control and I didn't feel like forcing something like Gligar or Donphan on the team. Next I wanted something that could provide my team with Stealth Rock while maintaining the "hard-hitter" mentality and Nidoqueen fit the bill. It sports an amazing typing that adds a solid Fighting and Fairy resist to the team and can also deter Volt Switch, threatens Fairies that stop M-Absol and Steels that hinder Gardevoir. Speaking of Volt Switch, I wanted to add an easy momentum grabber to the team that could threaten fast Mons, and I also lacked a Ground and Flying resist. Rotom-Heat qualifies for the aforementioned requirements, and the added feature of TrickScarf happens to help with walls by crippling them with a Scarf (btw I had to fit this thing on the team, since I fits the theme of this team perfectly lol). Doublade was an easy addition for me to make when I looked for something with the letter "D", since I felt like the double SD core with Absol would work well in overwhelming their checks, and the team also appreciate Doublade's defensive capabilities. Last but not least I decided on Celebi. My GRAND five are annoyed by bulky Waters (I have no Scald switch-in), and since I like set-up spam on offense, Nasty Plot + 3 attacks Celebi was added to the team. Dazzling Gleam over Psychic to hit Hydreigon which is an incredible threat to the team and Earth Power to round off the coverage. Also time travel bonus!
Replay 1: Celebi dominates after I remove Sylveon and Goodra early game.
Replay 2: Mega Absol sweeps after Doublade wears down Gligar. Unnecessarily close.
Replay 3: Versus some kind of balance. Wallbreaking at its finest. Forfeit or not, Celebi just won.

This team is hyper offence, mostly because of the small pool of pokemon we had to choose from, and i feel as forming a standard team with perfect coverage and walls would be nearly impossible (For me atleast).

I began from the beginning and worked my way up, starting from the first letter (G), I chose Gyarados because of its setup potential and early game sweeping.
Then I moved on to the second letter (R). I chose rotom mow becuase it created a great switch-in from pokemon that could oneshot or cripple Gyarados, Also its trick let me (Ironically) cripple that pokemon, or any setups like forretress or tentacruel that went right to spamming hazzards, and a specs stab leaf storm isn't too bad either. Darmanitan came next, partly because i wanted a solid fire/water/grass core, and part because i love how much pivoting i could achieve with Volt/turn, Its also a great scout/revenge killer for anything rotom had trouble with. Next was mega aero, chosen for its ground coverage and to outspeed things like mega bee that otherwise i couldn't achive without a ddance setup from gyarados. Lastly, doublade arrived because i wanted something to clean up late game, and it does that with a quick swords dance setup+shadow sneak. Also, its an amazing counter to sweepers such as slurpuff ect.

oh... it seems i still have something, OH YEAH!

Nidoking is here because i needed something to fill the N spot and not be garbage, its also fits perfectly in my hyper offence playstyle.

Explanation:
Because of the big teambuilding restriction Euphonos placed on us and how he loves under-the-radar builds, I decided to delve a bit deeper in the viability rankings thread to find some fun things to use. Recently, pif has used Registeel as his go to Steel-type, and it's pretty good. It's a solid Special wall that can safely switch into Specs Sylveon as well as a bunch of other special attackers. Furthermore, access to Thunder Wave allows it to force offense teams to take a paralysis. Darmanitan was also another Pokemon I had great interest in building around because of its single-move nuke. The synergy between relatively frequent Thunder Waves and sheer walll-breaking potential allows this combination to mess with Balance and Offense playstyles.

Despite its great bulk, Registeel is easily worn down because of its lack of Recovery. I also decided that a traditional Water/Steel/Fairy defensive core should work fine for this team. Personally, I felt that popular options such as Florges and Sylveon didn't mesh well because I needed something that could take Physical hits well. That was when Aromatisse came to mind. Finally, I needed a bulky water. I was originally going to go for Suicune, but then I realized Gyarados began with the letter G, so I went with that.

At this point, I really needed some form of hazard removal to keep Darmanitan and Gyarados in top shape. I wanted to go for Salamence, but the suspect test barred me from using it. Thus, I went for Crobat. Finally, I wanted to close the team with another wallbreaker that could actually put in work. I chose Nidoking because it's really strong because of stuff. I also opted for Toxic Spikes on it to allow the team to better handle bulkier teams via Toxic damage.

Time's up! Hands in the air! Great job, everyone!

At this point, I am still going to accept Kaiser Will's entry despite the lack of one replay. In the succeeding rounds, I am not going to accept any entry that doesn't have at least three replays.

Here are the entries for today's cycle:

- Pinkin Lark

- Lord Esche

- Kaiser Will

- eaglehawk

- warzoid

Everyone is asked to vote for the top two picks in the following categories:
  • CREATIVITY - Does the team made use of unusual Pokemon and/or sets that are very intriguing at first glance?
  • ELEVATION - Does the last Pokemon complete the gaps of the five given requirements?
  • EFFECTIVENESS - Is the team enough to beat even the most seasoned of players?

Everyone has until July 17, Sunday, 11:59 PM EST to vote for the top teams. Get out there and start voting! (I'll vote too, don't worry.)

Pinkin Lark for Creativity... love how he chose Dugtrio for D, and though a slow core Abomasnow+Rhyperior is really cool. Especially with Gyarados involved. Nice job and a very intersting squad indeed.

warziod also gets creativity.... Hone Claws durant for D I never thought off, and his defensive balstoise+signal beam rotom-mow GENIUS. Its crazy how that super niche defensive blastoise actually like, works so well for his team

warzoid for elevation, like I said before. Blastoise provided himi with a pretty relibable fire switchin, and much needed hazard control. Also acts as a cool and classic Bulky Offensive core with blastoise+nidoqueen

Lord Esche for Elevation p obvious, bulky water check was super needed and dual psychic is really scary

Effectiveness warzoid all the way, previous things explained it, his team is actually p good

lord esche for effectiveness as well :) Sorry had to go to bed and am super tired

CREATIVITY
1. eaglehawk - Aromatisse and Registeel are an interesting core and by no means bad options given what was available.
2. Pinkin Lark - Only team not to use a Nido. Only team other than eaglehawk's not to use a Rotom. Team overall has a very distinct feel to it compared to the other options.

ELEVATION
1. Pinkin Lark - in terms of which team would suffer the most without their last, Pinkin Lark's would clearly suffer the most without Forretress since it's the team's hazard remover, hazard setter, switch in to many common threats in the tier (mamo, sylv) and has a vital role as a pivot switch.
2. warzoid - Team needs Blastoise for a lot of reasons. Backbone of the team along with Rotom-C.

EFFECTIVENESS
1. warzoid - not sure this can be explained beyond "works the best"
2. Pinkin Lark

The teams are incredibly good in what they're doing; those gave me a pretty tough decision on who to vote!

CREATIVITY
1. Pinkin Lark - This is the most creative among the bunch; half of the team has very underrated Pokemon in Rhyperior, Mega Abomasnow, and Noivern!
2. eaglehawk - I was actually torn whether I'd go for either warzoid or eaglehawk in this slot because they have good creative touches everywhere, but I see eaglehawk's intriguing use of Registeel and Aromatisse giving a slight edge, especially that he attempted to break boundaries using a defensive-oriented balance one.

ELEVATION
1. Lord Esche - Celebi's late-game sweeping capabilities and resistance to the most popular move in Scald is what makes this team function so well.
2. warzoid - I was actually torn whether I'd go for either Pinkin Lark or warzoid in this slot because of the same ideology behind their team structure, but warzoid gave it an edge for using a rather skeptical but effective defensive (regular) Blastoise set.

EFFECTIVENESS
1. warzoid - Though having only the regular Blastoise to take the beating from Fire attacks that the rest of the team doesn't want to take, the replays shown were very faithful to how the team works.
2. Lord Esche - While Choice Scarf Darmanitan (with Rock Slide) poses a major problem to the team, the offensive synergy is way too much for the opposition to handle.

Hello, everyone! The second cycle of the season has begun!

Explanation:
Upon initial analysis, many of the Fossil Pokemon available are boosted animals (meaning that they can stat boost like crazy). Therefore, I fell back on my most comfortable playstyle, Dual Screens Offense. Kabutops can clean very well late game while Omastar tends to be a lead that can put offensive pressure from turn 1 and set up Rocks when he needs to die (i.e. for me to get that sweet, sweet momentum).

The choice to use this weird Omastar set comes from my team's urgent need for Stealth Rocks in order to sweep successfully. Weak Armor complements his rather suicidal playstyle. Weak Armor and Focus Sash can grant it enough speed to trounce traditional UU leads (think Krook or something). Although it can't deal with everything (Empoleon), it's still a solid option as a co-lead alongside Cresselia.

Now Cresselia seems weird at first because, nine times out of ten, Azelf is better for the job; however, Cresselia's bulk helps it to reliably set up Screens even when pressured by typical leads such as Mega-Bee and Krook. In some of my replays, you can see that after setting up the Turn 1 Reflect, a U-Turn from MegaBee only 2HKOs it. What also makes it relevant against other fast leads with Taunt is Magic Coat. By denying support moves such as Stealth Rock and Taunt helps sometimes shut down Pokemon like Sableye and Azelf. Furthermore, the aforementioned bulk also affords Cresselia a lot of breathing room if she predicts that Azelf or Sableye goes for the Knock Off. Finally, because this team surprisingly does a lot of switching in some cases, the damage racks up pretty quickly. For example, I could have Omastar at around 20% HP and switch him out. To most people, Omastar is pretty much dead. With Lunar Dance, you can claim the late game play if they decide to sack Omastar's aforementioned counters. This goes for almost any Pokemon on my team.

Although it's kind of a weird pick, Kabutops was the Pokemon I ultimately settled for. I could have gone Tyrantrum, but he's a bad Dragon Dancer because of it's slow +1 Speed coming off of a base 71 Speed stat. Besides, I think that Kabutops' typing makes it far more relevant in this metagame with respect to my team. It's able to safely switch into Entei and other Pokemon and set up without risking burns (Lum Berry). Water Priority is pretty good, so there's that.

I needed an answer to Sableye, Bulky waters, and Whimsicott. Therefore, I went with Mega Absol, Toxicroak, and Entei. Absol can go up against Sableye 1 v 1 thanks to Magic Bounce. Toxicroak is the general switch-in to many Bulky waters in the tier such as Suicune and Milotic. The last spot was a toss-up between Howl Entei and either NP/SD Ape. The problem with Ape is that it takes a lot of damage from a Whimsicott Moonblast. Furthermore, Entei is just overall much more bulkier than other potential Fire-type set-up sweepers. Besides, +2 ExtremeSpeed hits about as hard as Lucario's ExtremeSpeed, which allows Entei to clean relatively easily late game.

Replays:

Banded Tyrantrum Tailwind HO
Dragon Spam + Tailwind Spam is just epic and you can abuse of it with ease.

explanation:
lead aerodactyl with sash, generally with guarantee two setup moves unless you lead against something with priority like mamoswine or metagross, which swampert can often lead off against if you see it in team select.
tornadus can setup rain once aerodactyl dies with prankster and can clean up against grasses like whimsicott. Uturn can be nice to pivot against blisseys which you later clean up with swampert or kabutops and later clean up.
Aerial ace is my hidden move on kabutops to nab chesnaught on the switch. power up punch or protect are both good on swampert, pup helps sweep, or u can run protect to get a safe mega since swift swim doesnt work turn1
goodra can also check defensive grasses or physical walls like Mandibuzz, Arcanine, Tangrowth, etc.
Lastly, Metagross can wall off sylveon as well as add priority

Time's up! Hands in the air! Great job.

My team is in progress. I can't get to a computer until later so can I get permission for a late entry?
Unfortunately, you can't; apologies for that very unfortunate circumstance of yours.

These are the entries for this week's cycle:

- eaglehawk
- Mr. Highways
- z0mOG

Everyone is asked to vote for the top two picks in the following categories:
  • CREATIVITY - Does the team made use of unusual Pokemon and/or sets that are very intriguing at first glance (required Pokemon included)?
  • ESSENCE - Are the required Pokemon of great help to the team's overall presence?
  • EFFECTIVENESS - Is the team worth a masterpiece to use for Smogon Grand Slam's UU Open?

Everyone has until July 24, Sunday, 11:59 PM EST to vote for the top teams. I should expect more voter turn-out this time. ;)
