SM UU TEAMBUILDING COMPENDIUM

The idea of this thread is to provide a representation of what Pokemon do in the metagame. The Compendiums we have provided are the Checks Compendium and the Role Compendium. Below, you'll find paragraphs explaining what each compendium can help with. We hope that this is a very useful source of information for new and veteran players alike when it comes to team building, one of the hardest aspects of competitive Pokemon.

SM UU ROLE COMPENDIUM
Below, we have the various roles a SM UU team might want a Pokémon to fill. For each of these roles is a list of Pokémon which can fulfil said role; the Pokémon listed can perform the role mentioned in some way, shape, or form. If there is a Pokémon which isn't listed (which is to be expected in a changing meta), please feel free to post about it, and we may add it. However, this thread is not meant to be a place for discussion about the viability of Pokémon in general, unless a Pokémon's placement is drastically off. For now the place for that kind of discussion is the NP thread.

(Note: The Pokémon listed here are to be found on the current viability rankings.)

SM UU Checks Compendium

The basic goal of this part of the SM UU Teambuilding Compendium is to provide a visual tool to assist teambuilding by giving players a quick way to pick checks and counters for the metagame's top threats. Basically, a "check" as defined here is anything that reliably beats a threat, and they're separated in this list by whether or not they can counter, hard check, or revenge kill/soft check a top threat. The Pokemon will be listed by sprites rather than name for the sake of easy and quick reference. As we want this to be a community-built resource, I encourage everyone to suggest changes as you see fit. Here are a few guidelines that explain how this compendium will be organized (subject to change):

Counter: Pokemon listed can switch into basically anything standard the threat listed throws at them with Stealth Rocks up and still win the matchup. They may only be able to switch in safely one or two times, or they may only be able to switch in with certain sets, so that'll be up to the player's discretion. When evaluating which moves a check must be able to switch into, I'll only consider moves that (A) are included as main set slashes on a Pokemon's analysis page and/or (B) are on the most prominent set(s) in the current metagame. Anything else will be considered niche or uncommon enough that a check won't have to worry about it too often.

Hard Check: These Pokemon can switch in safely under certain circumstances, but not always (ex: Cobalion or Whimsicott switching into Hydreigon, risking Fire Blast). Pokemon in this category can either switch safely into some variants of a threat but struggle against others, or they struggle with common coverage moves but can at least switch into a threat's STABs and other moves commonly used on switches (such as boosting moves and Knock Off) and win the matchup. This is somewhat of a "gray area" category, so there's a bit of flexibility here.

Soft Check/Revenge Killer: These Pokemon cannot switch safely into a certain threat, generally because they are beaten by one of the threat's STABs, lose if they switch in on a boosting move, etc. Pokemon in this category can, however, defeat a threat in a 1-on-1 matchup. This includes faster revenge killers, as well as Pokemon that can take a single hit and KO back. Choice Scarf users fall into this category, but they aren't specifically mentioned or taken into account in this thread to avoid unnecessary clutter, so do use your own discretion.

The Pokemon below are sorted into their Viability Rankings that allows users to see checks and counters to more of the higher tier Pokemon rather than lower priority Pokemon. When naming Checks and Counters, we decided to keep to Pokemon that are B- rank, as well as select C+ rank ones, in the VR to avoid any near-unviable / unnecessary Pokemon from being added. If you think a C+ rank Pokemon that isn't covered is worth taking a look at, feel free to post about it, provided it is substantiated with proper reasoning. This compendium will also be updated alongside the Viability Rankings so be sure to check back after every update!

can't think of a lot of things right now but golisopod should probably be added to spikes..saw key doing well with it today. had my reservations at first but it actually has offensive presence unlike the other spike users (liquidation + spikes is seriously annoying), and has p good bulk - ability keeps up momentum i guess.

Add Silvally to Parting Shot users (bad but so is Persian-Alola).

Bronzong to both Physical and Special Dragon checks.

Take away Slowbro from CB users.

Add Bronzong and Quagsire to ground checks.

Add Florges and Granbull to Fighting checks and Dark checks.

Add Registeel to Fairy checks.

Add Quagsire to Fire checks.

Am really hyped for this thread as I used this tons when I was new to UU.

E: Add Dodrio to SD sweeper and Ninetails to weather setter.

- Honestly Silvally is worse than Persian-Alola, and as far as Parting Shot users go, Silvally just isn't worth it at all with Persian around, funny enough.
- No idea why Slowbro is even on there, probably Killintime messing up. Thanks for the catch.
- Not sure how I feel about Bronzong as a ground check when it doesn't really check the more prominent Ground-types atm. It gets obliterated by Krookodile, worn down by Swampert, Nidos tend to run Flamethrower/Fire Blast now for Scizor if anything, it can't touch Gliscor, and Zygarde-10% clicks Thousand Arrows against it. The most you can do to stuff like Hippowdon is clicking Toxic against it. Similar feelings about Quagsire but at least it gets recovery to actually outlast some of the aforementioned Ground-types.
- I don't see Florges being that viable at the moment to warrant being listed in the compendium. Florges's niche in UU since Sylveon became a thing back in ORAS has been Synthesis (with Wish or CM), which kinda got fucked when everyone started running Hippowdon. That on top of what else was making it mediocre just makes it not worth it.
- We may consider adding Registeel and Granbull in the future if they prove to be more prominent/viable. Right now, they just don't hold up. Dodrio is more so waiting for someone to really do something with it instead of taking someone's word for it.
- Quagisre to Fire checks is fine.

Thanks for your input. Hope I cleared up why some of what you brought up wasn't the best.

Just wondering, but why isn't Dhelmise listed at all?
Is it so bad that it doesn't even have the slightest niche?
Hey DouglasFalcon! The compendium for now is displaying whatever me and my fellow hosts decide has enough of a niche until the VR is available for me to gauge public opinion. Dhelmise is a sad excuse for a mon boasting an incredible 131 base attack and 3 stabs and is incapable of checking a lot of mons it resists such as primarina, keldeo, azumarill, etc. Grass/Steel/Ghost coverage is pretty mediocre especially when its ghost stab is either shadow claw or locking itself into Phantom force. Without an av it can't even check water moves anymore:
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Dhelmise: 146-172 (42.4 - 50%) -- 93.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

The base speed ain't helping its case either in the case of mons who you switch into to resist one stab and just switch to knock off.... So in not listing dhelmise I hope to god people won't bother with this garbage and not have it sit here for an entire gen in the wrong tier like they did Donphan in ORAS. Oh and for what its worth it kind of sucks when dhelmise can't even beat a lot of rockers such as cobalion (hell even SDs on it), Krookodile, Bisharp, Nidos, Forretress, Aerodactyl, etc. I hope that answers your question.

Bonus: A word from one of our tier leaders. http://puu.sh/tjvtv/f6799444ee.gif

Thanks for the clear and fast response, although hearing these words aimed towards my favourite anchor breaks my heart :(
Guess I'll just wait its drop in RU and try to make it works down here :/

Hi.
  • Thundurus-T is still on a lot of these despite being banned, fix pls.
  • Breloom's also still got mentions, remove pls.
  • Add Mewnium-Z mention
  • Add Glalie to Megas; it may not even be good but we had Audino listed in last gen when it was like C- iirc so even if it proves to have a super small niche it's worth putting on anyway.
  • Add Lucario to Vacuum Wave section for Prio users.
  • Add Waterium-Z maybe for Keldeo (Rain Dance / Hydro Pump)
  • Maybe add Primarina in walls somewhere, I don't think a Defensive set is the worst thing considering its typing and I've seen a RestTalk set and a TectToxic set do some work with appropriate support.
  • Maybe add Tsareena for Physical Walls? It's listed as a physical Dragon check and I believe it's not the best offensively considering its Speed and typing.
  • I don't think there's a section for Haze users, although I'm not particularly sure where they would be if they're not categorized under Phazers. Either way I think it's a useful section to have and users would probably be like Quagsire, Tentacruel, Milotic, etc.
  • Primarina should probably be in Stallbreakers / Wallbreakers section considering the potency of its Choice Specs set.
  • Add Magneton to Choice Specs users.
  • Add Roserade to Toxic Spikes users.
  • Add Hippowdon to Roar as well? Whirlwind is the better option but it does have access to both but considering we have stuff like Vacuum Wave Mew listed I assume this should be fine
  • Here's something I'm confused about; Bisharp is listed in the Special Dragons Check but not the Physical Dragons Check while Cobalion is the opposite. If Bisharp is a Special Dragon Check, so is Cobalion. If Bisharp is a Special Dragon Check, it should 100% be a Physical Dragon Check.

- Told killintime to do the first 3 already, hate him.
- Probably adding a Haze users section alongside Phazers considering Phazers literally stands for Pseudo-Hazers.
- Everything else to add seems fair except for a few
  • Hippowdon for Roar: Talked to Kreme about it, and it's kinda pointless to add it in for the sake of completion when Whirlwind does the same thing except it's not a sound move which inherently makes Roar not as good since it's blocked by Soundproof. That's niche af but it's the only distinction.
  • I have no issue adding Cobalion to special Dragon checks considering it does check Hydreigon and Kyurem (and Drampa if you count that). Not too keen on Bisharp to physical dragon check since it's really just about picking those off with Sucker Punch and the same can be said with so many priority users. It's at least better in special ones mainly for Latias. Will probably think about this one more.
  • Mega Glalie just doesn't seem worth it at all right now, and Shiba mentioning stuff like Audino in the past doesn't mean we should do the same.
As always, everyone should keep in mind that the current compendium was done to the best of the abilities of the hosts (and some help from Pearl), so expect us to be revising this a ton in the near future as the meta develops, more stuff gets posted, etc. :toast:

- I don't feel like bisharp would be in practice a check for any physical dragon because the few ones that don't carry ground coverage are kommo-O (for which bisharp is definitely not a switch in), Guzzlord and Silvally, which both doesn't seem viable enough, and well, there's Goodra but idk if physical Goodra is legit.
- It's Politoed.
-Maybe add a section for Spore/z-sleeping moves users (or just statusers in general since there's a list for heal bell)

Alright:
  1. Godfather 4 bisharp is in special dragon checks not physical so I don't see your point. Unless you are talking to truth or something mb.
  2. I will get right to the spelling check...I guess..mb
  3. Ill add one if we get a lot more users/viability out of it, as it stands amoongus is the only spore user I know and roserade z-sleep powder is something I havent seen yet and would like to see if its more than just a gimmick if you have the replays to back it up. (although if its that good please do discuss it in the NP thread)

Suckle gets Sturdy, which you mentioned on Forretress.

Beartic is also a Hail Abuser.
As for you sam:
  1. Shuckle does indeed get sturdy but doesn't have any other ability really worth running on it unless they release custap so why bother mentioning it on the lead set, with that in mind I will take forre off as well until custap actually gets released.
  2. Indeed it is, not sure if I want to add it yet just waiting on a VR.

I would add A-Ninetales to Choice Scarf users as it can be good on stall as it Ohkoes Haxorus and outspeeds it at +1 it also outspeeds and ohkoes Sharpedo at +1 while outspeeeding CB ZyDog and Choice Scarf Flygon.
252 SpA Ninetales-Alola Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Haxorus: 350-414 (119.4 - 141.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Ninetales-Alola Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zygarde-10%: 600-708 (240.9 - 284.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Ninetales-Alola Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Sharpedo-Mega: 320-380 (113.8 - 135.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Ninetales-Alola Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Flygon: 628-744 (208.6 - 247.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Ninetales-Alola Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Flygon: 628-744 (208.6 - 247.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Few things:

1. You probably should not have a Ninetales-Alola on stall to begin with, especially not a Choice Scarf variant. Just a thought.
2. If you listed those Pokemon as ones that you'd want Ninetales-Alola to deal with on stall, let's have a look. Haxorus can be a threat to stall, but honestly, in this meta, it's less of a threat than you'd think with stuff like Hippowdon and Forretress existing. Zygarde-10% isn't exactly a threat to stall to begin with when something like Alomomola walls it for days, same with Sharpedo-Mega which isn't breaking through stall without a bunch of support unless it gets some defense drops. Flygon is still pretty irrelevant right now, especially when it comes to breaking stall.
3. By running a Choice Scarf on Ninetales-Alola, you're basically taking away the use of its biggest niche in the tier, Aurora Veil. I will give you the fact that Ninetales-Alola has a nice offensive typing, but with the Special Attack stat that it has, it hits like a wet paper towel against anything remotely bulky (note how frail the examples you gave are). It's not the best, but we listed it under Choice Specs since it needs the boost to hit decently hard and it still hits a good speed tier naturally, outspeeding stuff like Cobalion and Keldeo. That's why it's the only set I'd run if it's not running Aurora Veil.

Sorry, but what you recommended is just not that viable, and isn't suitable for us to add to the compendium.

I think you forgot to add Tsareena as a counter / hard check under Hippowdon, but overall, 11/10 resource ;w;

e- and Mantine, maybe Empoleon as a hard check to Froslass?

The problem with Tsareena is that the standard set has no Attack investment, so Trop Kick does less than 40% to standard Hippowdon. If the Hippowdon is carrying Toxic, Tsareena loses. Without Toxic, Hippowdon can lose since it's forced to Slack Off a lot, but Toxic is the most common filler move so I'm leaving it out.

Mantine can Toxic / burn Hippowdon with Scald even though Scald doesn't 2HKO, so it's in a similar situation as Swampert. Adding it to hard checks.

Add Raikou and Keldeo to Normalium Z (Hyper Beam) Good neutral coverage for both the mons.

Add Raikou to Ghostium Z
(Shadow Ball) Same as above but also hits psychics or ghosts for SE damage.

Add Lucario to Fightinium Z (Aura Sphere/Close Combat) Gives it a lot more power to its attacks with Close Combat not dropping defenses.

Add Haxorus to Steelium Z (Iron Tail) Good more powerful alternative to Z-Poison Jab.

As for you Ov3r Ac3 I will be adding Raikou and Keldeo good catch. Lucario is pretty weak without its LO so its pretty iffy option overall not like lucariou's defences really matter when it comes down to it. As for haxorous can you provide examples as to what makes iron tail>poison jab on a Z-move set.

Z-Iron Tail Ohkoes Clefable most of the time if you don't get a min roll while Z-Posion Jab only does max 100.5%

252 Atk Mold Breaker Haxorus Acid Downpour (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 336-396 (85.2 - 100.5%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Mold Breaker Haxorus Corkscrew Crash (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 376-444 (95.4 - 112.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

So from what I see it doesn't appear to hit anything of note? Clefable will die either way if boosted, if they are unaware (the only set that runs max defence) they are liable to stealth rock damage. Not like any of this matters in this scenario you should be a boosted haxorus if playing versus max defence clefable. Z-jab also allows you to hit targets like defensive primarina making it a lot more useful in that regard.
