Welcome Smogonites! We all know what are lures and what they do, specific Pokemon that run an unexpected move or moveset in order to weaken or directly OHKO a specific threat, and pave the way for another sweeper. Having said that though, there isn't that much of a focus on lures in the OU Forum, and a good deal of lures used by battlers aren't really that optimal, this project tries from a competition to see what the ingenuity of people can come up with, and, hopefully; improve the Teambuilding aspect we have at the moment.

Every week, I will post a threat in the OU metagame alongside a set and a brief description of how it works. The community will then have around four days to nominate Pokemon (with sets) that they feel are effective lures to that specific threat. I will then pick the best lures and they will be the winners.

Rules
  • You must post a set and an explanation of why your chosen Pokemon is a good lure alongside your nomination. Damage calculations/replays are appreciated and can help better illustrate your point, but they are by no means required.
  • Please focus on only posting OU-viable Pokemon as lures. As a general rule of thumb, only nominating Pokemon found in the OU Viability Rankings is a good idea. You may nominate Pokemon that aren't found in that thread, but please post a detailed explanation of why that Pokemon is viable if you do. Nominations can be rejected on the basis of the Pokemon being unviable.
  • You are welcome to reserve a lure, but only if you plan to complete the write-up within 48 hours. Other users may nominate the Pokemon themselves if you fail to meet this time requirement.
  • If you have posted a Pokemon, you may not post a second during the first three days of the cycle. However, you may reserve a second from the fourth day onwards. For example, if a cycle starts on Tuesday and you post a lure on the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, you may reserve a second Pokémon from Friday onwards. One person can't reserve a third Pokemon in any given cycle.lf.
  • Does this Pokemon have to sacrifice anything important? If you're losing a key part of a set just for an uncommon threat that isn't even lured in that is what we call a "bad lure", always consider what you give up in order to lure something, that is very important.
  • Does this Pokemon gain anything important when using this moveset? Does this Pokemon or the team benefit from the lure.
  • Could this method be better aided through teammates? Does your lure need team support to carry out its role effectively?
  • Is this set uncommon enough to be really considered a lure? Would your opponent, under normal battle conditions, expect to be able to safely switch the Pokemon into your lure?
Examples

Keldeo-Resolute @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hidden Power [Poison]

This is an example of a good lure. Utilising Hidden Power Poison, Keldeo can effectively remove Specialy Defensive Tapu Bulu with some prior damage, which would hard wall any other variant of Keldeo. It also hits Tapu Fini for decent damage.

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt

This is an example of a bad lure. While it seems like a perfectly fine set to surprise Zygarde and Landorus-T, running Hidden Power Ice completely removes its niche in OU as a Steel-type trapper, as it's no longer capable of using Hidden Power Fire to defeat Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor.

Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Focus Punch
- Thunder Punch

Focus Punch is a clean OHKO on even HP invested Heatran, which generally likes to come in on Mawile as it walls all other sets. Substitute is an option over Thunder Punch as it allows for a safer hit on Tran, but revealing Substitute generally gives away you're running Focus Punch as well, not to mention Thunder Punch provides great coverage for CelePex teams alike. This set still requires some prediction, as Focus Punch should be used as Heatran switches in, but it is still an amazing Heatran lure.

252+ Atk Huge Power Mawile-Mega Focus Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 588-692 (152.3 - 179.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Simple lure, tran only rly fears leech seed from steela so it can switch in fairly safely, and you can just eq it on the switch.

0 Atk Celesteela Earthquake vs. 212 HP / 44 Def Heatran: 268-316 (71.2 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

- Psychic
- Recover
- Defog

A nice throw back to Oras but with Zmoves, Z-Surf Latios has been my favourite Heatran lure, especially paired with the likes of M.Scizor. It can switch into any of Heatrans attacks only being most affected by Toxic and nuke it with Z-Surf or remove the Stealth Rock it set up and can very easily bluff Scarf due to the Z-move. Heatran also likes to switch in on Latios as it usually doesn't carry anything to hurt it with other than crippling with Trick. Z-Surf is not just used for Heatran either as it nukes switch-ins such a Ttar, Bisharp and Bulky Excadrill alleviating some of the problems they cause. However with the loss of Draco Meteor or a boosting item in LO/Soul Dew, Latios is doing significantly less damage and thus is left in a more supporting role for the team.

252 SpA Latios Hydro Vortex (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 362-426 (93.7 - 110.3%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Latios Hydro Vortex (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 362-426 (93.7 - 110.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Ability: Technician
EVs: 200 HP / 252 Att / 4 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- Swords Dance
- Roost/Bug Bite/U-Turn/Knock Off

Bit of an old set here. Full on sweeping scizor works really nicely as a Tran lure thanks to this set being nearly non-existent these days (fuck u lele). As a result, Tran's an easy switch in to Scizor, but a full powered Superpower is gonna do enough to basically make it useless the rest of the game or potentially die after rocks.

252+ Atk Scizor-Mega Superpower vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 306-360 (79.2 - 93.2%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Ferrothorn @ Groundium Z
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 120 HP / 220 Atk / 168 SpD or 200 HP / 220 Atk / 88 Def
Careful / Impish Nature (depends if u wanna go physdef or spdef)
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Bulldoze
- Power Whip

this set is pretty much like the above set but it actually kills tran while maintaining some utility if they don't have a tran or magnezone. evs maximize spdef or physdef depending on what you want but ofc you can go mixed bulk but im too lazy to find better evs.

220 Atk Ferrothorn Tectonic Rage (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 388-460 (100.5 - 119.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

220 Atk Ferrothorn Tectonic Rage (120 BP) vs. 140 HP / 0 Def Magnezone: 360-428 (113.9 - 135.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

reserving earthquake mew

Mew @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Spe
Timid Nature
- Ice Beam
- Earthquake
- Soft-Boiled
- Defog

Earthquake Mew is a cool lure since its a fairly passive mon that invites in Heatran since it can switch into any of Mew's moves while barely taking any damage from Ice Beam and Psychic. Earthquake comfortably 2HKOs Heatran on the switch and outspeeds it so it can finish it afterwards if the opponent doesn't switch for some reason. It also chunks Magearna, which is nice since it usually wouldn't really mind switching into Ice Beam or Psychic. Earthquake is used over Earth Power since it does pretty much the same damage to Heatran while hitting AV Magearna harder.

0- Atk Mew Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 248-292 (64.2 - 75.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0- Atk Mew Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Magearna: 114-136 (31.4 - 37.4%) -- 83.7% chance to 3HKO

0- Atk Mew Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 114-136 (37.8 - 45.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Note: Earthquake could probably be used over Defog if the team doesn't need Defog support or would simply rather have Will-O-Wisp support.

Yellow Magic Thunder Wave Clefable

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Knock Off / Stealth Rock / Calm Mind
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Moonblast

This set is a relic from the time Clef was pretty much the best mon during XY/ORAS, and it isn't as effective due to the accuracy nerf of Thunder Wave and the nerf to Paralysis in general, but Clefable's still able to outpace a paralyzed Timid Heatran in 7th gen, and while 90% accuracy on Thunder Wave is a bit of a blow, it's still accurate enough, I'd say. From my understanding, Thunder Wave Clefable's a pretty rare set these days, and because of this Heatran just loves to switch in vs this thing.

Anyways, Heatran comes in on the switch and gets para'd. You're then free to get the hell out of there before it traps you with Magma Storm. If you're running Calm Mind, you can try to 1v1 it by getting up a boost before it Taunts you, but you'd have to rely on parahax and misses to make this work and isn't recommended.

While Clefable can't really do much to Heatran while un-boosted by Calm Mind even if it's paralyzed, a paralyzed Heatran is excellent news for its teammates that are slower than a max-speed variant, such as Superpower Mega Scizor, Superpower/Fightinium Z Tapu Bulu, unboosted Fightinium Z Magearna, defensive Lando-T, and even your own Earth Power Heatran to prevent speed-ties.

EQ Mega Latias (the last reservation expired)

Latias @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psychic
- Earthquake (replacing HP Fire)
- Recover

This is a variation of the classic LO set, with Latiasite over LO for the increased bulk together with the offenses and the Knock Off-absorber megastone, and Earthquake which is usually stronger than HP Fire when you face a not-4x weak monster. The loss of LO recoil is also a thing to consider.
Ferrothorn and Mega-Scizor, while now are a problem for Latias, still remain passive enough you can handle them with another partner.

0- Atk Latias-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 248-292 (64.2 - 75.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Ran this a bit last gen and it works for this gen too. It won't 2HKO Heatran (does 41-48 and that's if you hit), but you win the 1v1 if they're already chipped for 2HKO range, or if you hit Focus Blast when they switch in. Magma Storm does 36-42 or 37-44 (assuming they hit), so they'll need a 3HKO as well and it's also possible to Softboiled as they click Magma Storm or Focus Blast as they Taunt.

Takes a bit of effort and a bit of luck but it'll work out for not only Heatran, but Band Tar, Kartana (1HKO'ing these 2) and Ferrothorn to a smaller degree (does 36-42).

This 100% original Muscle K set set was designed to trap steels that are usually particularly hard to trap ie. Mawile, Heatran and
The premise of this lure is to nuke Heatran upon switch-in, as Magnezone can rarely win the 1v1, unless Magma Storm misses and or the opponent sets rocks up in your face. If you encounter a Specially Defensive Heatran (which, let's face it is probably never), just let it take 30% so zone can revenge kill it with gigavolt havoc.

The Electrium Z can also be used to trap the previously mentioned Mawile and Heatran, while simultaneously securing the OHKO on the now rarely used Specially Defensive Celesteela.

Celesteela is Life

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 228 Def / 16 SpA / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Hidden Power [Fire]

While using a special attack on Mega Scizor seems pretty impractical at first, Technician HP Fire Mega Sciz actually makes for a pretty neat lure to opposing Mega Scizors if you don't need Defog, 2HKOing the standard spread with the SpA investment. This is pretty dope as usually Mega Scizors are locked into a U-turning stalemate with each other, and luring M-Sciz can pave the way for teammates like DD Zygarde to sweep easier. It also punishes Kartanas who decide to set up on Mega Scizor, which is pretty nice as Kartana's everywhere right now.

16- SpA Technician Scizor-Mega Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Scizor-Mega: 172-204 (50.1 - 59.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
16- SpA Technician Scizor-Mega Hidden Power Fire vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 408-480 (157.5 - 185.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled
- Stealth Rock
- Flamethrower

Most Clefables usually run something like Calm Mind, Knock Off or Toxic on its last slot nowadays, but Flamethrower can still prove to be useful. Because Defog Mega-Scizor doesn't run evs on atk, its Bullet Punch doesn't even 2HKO Clefable while Clefable can do around 80% with Flamethrower, which might be enough to kill it after a bit of chip damage. Flamethrower isn't totally deadweight moveslot because it can do some damage to Ferrothorn and even might get a surprise kill on Kartana if for some reason it switches directly into Clefable or try to set up on it.

0 SpA Clefable Flamethrower vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Scizor-Mega: 248-296 (72.3 - 86.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 Atk Technician Scizor-Mega Bullet Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 162-192 (41.1 - 48.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Garchomp scarf

Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Rock Slide

Simple set Fire blast can 2HKO defog scizor. And Rock Slide > Stone Edge because i prefer more accuracy.

0- SpA Garchomp Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Scizor-Mega: 236-280 (68.8 - 81.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Latios @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Defog
- Hidden Power Fire

A practical, straightforward lure. Most Scarf Latios don't even consider Hidden Power Fire over Thunder Wave or Trick, the former of which is annoying to Mega Scizor, but not quite a lure. Hidden Power Fire, however, is a nice lure for Mega Scizor considering it does upwards 90% and when factoring in prior damage it's usually a guaranteed KO. It also takes advantage of the fact that Mega Scizor and other Steel-types have become rather complacent when dealing with Latios, so it's a cool move considering it also hits Ferrothorn for substantial damage and Magearna gets chipped by it, which is nice as nothing else Latios usually runs can even touch it. You lose out on threatening Heatran, but overall this is an effective lure that does the job.

252 SpA Latios Hidden Power Fire vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Scizor-Mega: 264-312 (76.9 - 90.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
