Doubles Scrafty

sam-testings

What a beautiful face, I have found in this place
[OVERVIEW]

Scrafty is a useful support Pokemon that is mainly used by Trick Room teams. It has access to Fake Out, which can allow Trick Room setters to set up, and Intimidate to support physically frail Pokemon such as Hoopa-U and Mega Gardevoir. It also has good natural bulk and an offensive presence with Knock Off, which can make it hard to switch into. Scrafty has a low Speed stat that leaves it outsped by a majority of the metagame, but this allows it to operate well under Trick Room. However, its middling Attack stat leaves it with a weak offensive presence. Additionally, Scrafty is weak to the many Fairy-types in the tier, such as the Tapus and Mega Gardevoir.

[SET]
name: Assault Vest
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Low Kick / Drain Punch
move 3: Fake Out
move 4: Ice Punch / Super Fang / Poison Jab
item: Assault Vest
ability: Intimidate
nature: Brave
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
ivs: 0 Speed

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Knock Off gets rid of opposing Pokemon's items, such as pinch Berries or Choice Scarves. Low Kick hits harder than Drain Punch in most cases, hitting Pokemon such as Heatran, Snorlax, and Tyranitar. Drain Punch recovers Scrafty's health, giving it longevity. Fake Out allows Scrafty's partner to use a setup move or set up Trick Room more easily. Ice Punch is a good coverage move that allows Scrafty to deal with threats such as Landorus-T and Zygarde. Super Fang deals a lot of damage towards Pokemon that resist or take very little damage from Scrafty's attacks such as Celesteela, and it can weaken bulkier Pokemon to allow teammates to deal with them. Poison Jab is another coverage move that deals with Fairy-types, especially Tapu Bulu, which is 4x weak to it and is a large threat to Trick Room teams.

Set Details
========

Assault Vest gives Scrafty more bulk, allowing it to tank special hits more easily. Maximum HP investment as well as 4 SpD EVs allows Scrafty to receive as many hits as possible while still hitting hard and allows it to be slower than Aegislash in Blade Forme. The remaining EVs are put into Attack to increase Scrafty's damage output. A Brave nature boosts Scrafty's Attack even more, which allows it to hit harder and move faster under Trick Room. Intimidate makes all physical attacks hit less hard. 0 Speed IVs are used to be as slow as possible for Trick Room.

Usage Tips
========

Scrafty should be used as a support for its teammates with Fake Out and Intimidate. Fake Out gives its teammate a free turn to fire off an attack or to set up, while Intimidate makes physical attacks weaker, which can allow more frail Pokemon to switch in safely. Scrafty's high bulk, combined with Intimidate and Fake Out support, allows it to be a used as a spammable pivot to buy extra turns. Knock Off can be used to get rid of key items such as 50% Berries, Safety Goggles, and Choice items. Try to avoid getting burned, as it severely hurts Scrafty's ability to do damage. Lure in threats to your team and deal lots of damage to them with your coverage move.

Team Options
========

Scrafty pairs well with Pokemon that require a turn to set up moves such as Trick Room or Tailwind, such as Mega Gardevoir, Poryon2, Zapdos, and Mega Charizard Y. Fire- and Steel-types such as Heatran, Mega Charizard Y, and Celesteela are essential to switch into Fairy-type attacks that deal a ton of damage to Scrafty. Checks to opposing Fighting-types are very helpful, such as Azumarill, Tapu Lele, and Mega Salamence. Setup sweepers such as Azumarill, Volcarona, and Mega Salamence appreciate the Fake Out and Intimidate support, as it gives them an easier time to set up.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

An offensive set holding Life Orb is a viable option that takes advantage of Scrafty's low Speed, and Fake Out + Intimidate support allows its teammates to set up Trick Room more easily. Stone Edge can be used to hit Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Volcanion. Snarl can be used to cripple foes on the switch in; however, you sacrifice a lot of power. Since Scrafty lacks an offensive presence, it can use an Eject Button to switch out to a more offensive teammate once it has done its job.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-types**: Scrafty is 4x weak to Fairy-type attacks and is OHKOed by Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini, Tapu Lele, and Mega Gardevoir. Fairy-types can also basically ignore any of Scrafty's attacks.

**Flying-types**: Mega Salamence is not KOed by Ice Punch, and it can threaten Scrafty back with Double Edge, which OHKOes without Intimidate. Shaymin-S is also a large threat to Scrafty and is not affected by Intimidate.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types such as Marshadow and Terrakion can both deal a lot of damage to Scrafty, and Scrafty tends to not have a good way to hit back hard. Landorus-T carrying Superpower can also threaten Scrafty.

**Psychic Terrain**: Psychic Terrain makes Fake Out useless, removing a lot of Scrafty's usefulness.

Quick Guard's utility seem a bit more limited this gen, due to the drop in powerful priority users. Also Scrafty is too slow to block most Fake Outs. I think Scrafty would see more mileage if you give Scrafty a 4th coverage move (Ice Punch / Stone Edge) or support options like Taunt or Snarl. You wanna drop its Spe to 18 EVs with an Adamant Nature - let's Scrafty be slower than Quiet Aegislash while letting it be faster than Azumarill to Knock Off its Sitrus / Taunt it before it can drum (However, most Azumarill would be EV'd to be faster than Aegislash).

As for items, I think it is kinda like Ludicolo in that it can go bulky with AV or more offensive with LO (which is probably reserved for TR). However, Sitrus is always a safe option. I would drop the 50% berries to AC or OO.

LO ended up being the best set by the end of gen 6, don't see why it wouldn't be the best again this gen. Head Smash is worth a mention too.

Head Smash is probably OO at best IMO. Although it brings a lot of power to Scrafty's arsenal, it's as inaccurate as Stone Edge with a nasty 50% recoil to boot. Those health aint coming back (unless paired with Heal Pulse/Wish), and Scrafty needs every bit of health to tank hits.

The reason for Head Smash is you basically accomplish Stone Edge and Poison Jab in one slot. Head Smash hits Azu, Koko, Fini, Lele (not Bulu obvsly) as hard as Poison Jab would (150 BP vs 160 BP), while also hitting all of Stone Edge's targets.

252+ Atk Life Orb Scrafty Head Smash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 208-246 (74 - 87.5%)
252+ Atk Life Orb Scrafty Head Smash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Lele: 230-272 (81.8 - 96.7%)
252+ Atk Life Orb Scrafty Head Smash vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Azumarill: 217-256 (53.7 - 63.3%)

Scrafty with LO and Head Smash isn't trying to tank things. It's used as Fake Out support to get TR up + a nuke afterwards that not much can handle.

I think the EVs need some work. Just 252 HP EVs ensure survival against -1 Adamant Mega Salamence's Return:
  • -1 252+ Atk Aerilate Mega Salamence Return vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Scrafty: 282-332 (84.4 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
They're also missing 4 EVs and in the wrong order (HP > Atk > Def).

Talked a bit with QC and we agreed set should be as follows:

name: Assault Vest
move 1: Knock Off
move 2: Drain Punch / Low Kick
move 3: Fake Out
move 4: Ice Punch / Super Fang / Poison Jab
item: Assault Vest
ability: Intimidate
nature: Brave
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD

Please change Moves and Set Details to reflect the new set, and glance over the rest of the analysis and make any other changes you can find.

A few bigger things I want to go over now:
  • Azumarill doesn't even run Play Rough a majority of the time, so the times you say Scrafty is weak to Azumarill should be changed
  • The elements of your current set that aren't in the above set can be added to OO (QG, Detect, Sitrus, Lum, Iapapa)
  • Usage Tips is looking quite bare right now - check the C&C Guide for ideas on what to talk about if you're feeling stuck
  • Tapu Lele can be placed in Fairy-types, just add a sentence in there about why it's a particularly strong check to Scrafty. Also, add an **Intimidate and Burns** tag
Sorry this has been sitting for a while, but make the above changes and I'll work on getting it moving again.

Low Kick > Drain Punch imo. The former actually lets Scrafty deal hefty amount of damage.

Eject Button is worth a mention in a TR or Rain setting. Allows Scrafty to be safely swapped with a threatening TR or Rain sweeper.

No mention of Eject Button still :[

Also LO is worth an OO mention. Let's Scrafty actually be an offensive force to be reckoned with under TR. Drain Punch recovery somewhat mitigates the LO recoil.

  • [Overview] Take out the Quick Guard mention
  • [Overview] Don't talk about competition with Hitmontop - beating Aegislash/Hoopa-U are big enough niches that Hitmontop isn't really ever worth it. The point about no reliable Fighting-type STAB is good though
  • [Set] Put Low Kick before Drain Punch; Add a line for 0 Spe IVs after the EVs
  • [Moves] Mention Low Kick before Drain Punch to match order - specific mentions to Heatran, Ttar, and Snorlax strengthen its case
  • [Moves] Remove the Zygarde mention for Super Fang - Zygarde is a reason to use Ice Punch instead
  • [Set Details] You talk about Adamant but that should be Brave
  • [Set Details] 0 Spe IVs to ensure Scrafty is slower than Aegislash and hits it in Blade forme
  • [Team Options] Give some examples of TR/Tailwind setters
  • [Checks and Counters] **Fairy-types** can also basically ignore Scrafty and its attacks
  • [Checks and Counters] **Mega Salamence** is threatening, but it fears Ice Punch and Double-Edge doesn't OHKO if Scrafty gets off an Intimidate
Do the above for QC 1/2, then go ahead and write this up

Thanks for all your work on this sam-testings!

QC 2/2
pending the changes below:

[Overview] Everything you're saying here is correct, but the wording needs to be tightened up a bit:
  • The lede should emphasis that Scrafty is predominantly a support Pokemon that fufills that role quite well and is intended mainly to be used on Trick Room teams. It provides Fake Out support for Trick Room setters (Hoopa-U, Mega Garevoir, etc.) as well as Intimidate support to support physically frail Pokemon (again, Hoopa-U and Mega Gardevoir, etc.).
  • Access to a strong Fighting move isn't Scrafty's problem, offensively; it has both High Jump Kick and Low Kick in its movepool. The reason its offensive presence is weak is solely because of its middling Attack stat.
  • When you mention Scrafty's weakness to Fairy-types, add a mention for Mega Gardevoir, and downplay the importance of Azumarill a bit since its now an uncommon Pokemon that only uses Play Rough > Knock Off on occasion.
[Moves] Emphasize how Poison Jab hits Tapu Bulu for significant x4 damage, as Tapu Bulu is one of the scarier Pokemon for a Trick Room team to face.

[Usage Tips] Mention how Scrafty makes for good pivot / sponge into an opponent's attacks; Scrafty's high bulk, combined with its Intimidate support and Fake Out support on the following turn, make it a spammable pivot when you need to buy yourself a turn to get into a better position.

[Team Options] A few comments:
  • Provide examples of the Trick Room and Tailwind setters that appreciate Scrafty's support
  • Trick Room setters aren't necessary for Scrafty to function, but Scrafty's main niche is to support Trick Room setters due to its low speed and overall utility.
[Other Options] Clarify a bit more how Eject Button is supposed to work on Scrafty. Scrafty is an overall weak Pokemon that, in many scenarios, doesn't want to stay on the field longer than it has to. It really just wants to stick around long enough to Intimidate physical attackers and Fake Out opponents that threaten your Trick Room setters. Eject Button allows Scrafty to support a Trick Room setter or pivot into an attack for the turn it's actually needed, then GTFO so a stronger mon can provide a *real* offensive presence on the following turn.

[Checks and Counters] A few comments:
  • Where you mention **Fairy Types** add mentions for Tapu Lele and Mega Gardevoir.
  • Replace **Mega Salamence** with **Flying Types** and add a mention of Shaymin-S since it is also a huge threat to Scrafty for the same reason as Mega Salamence; it's a faster Flying-type with a strong Flying attack. Also, Mega Salamence doesn't die to a Scrafty Ice Punch when Scrafty is at -1 attack due to Intimidate, unless Scrafty is carrying Life Orb.
  • Where you mention **Fighting-types**, remove references to Keldeo since its not on the VR, but add a mention for Marshadow since that's a top-tier threat in this meta. Also mention how Landorus-Ts packing Superpower can threaten Scrafty.
  • Replace the **Tapu Lele** tag with **Psychic Terrain**, since it's the terrain and not the Pokemon that prevents Fake Out. Scrafty's weakness to Fairy-type attacks is already covered in the **Fairy-types** tag.
