Pokemon Matchmaking

Approved by Magnemite | Taken over for TONE114. Format stolen from all Pokemon Matchmaking Threads

(enter banner here)

All Pokemon are unable to function effectively with their checks and counters gone, which is where their teammates come in. These partners are capable of dismantling multiple Pokemon proving a threat to their teammates, providing invaluable support and thus are often seen as the heart of the team. This project aims to brainstorm various ideal and effective partners to various Pokemon that may range from metagame defining Pokemon to more underrated threats.

Procedure

Every week, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion of potential partners and submissions. In that week, you will have the chance to submit any good partners for that chosen Pokemon, and after the course of the week I will choose the three best partner(s) for that chosen Pokemon and put it into the archive. People that manage to get into the archive multiple times with good submissions will be let into the Hall of Fame.

Rules
1. Stick with things on the viability rankings. Unviable Pokemon such as Plusle or Slaking should not be nominated at all.
2. Reservations are perfectly welcome. However, in your reservation post you must state when you will be able to get your reservation done. This time frame must be no longer than 12 hours. After this time has expired, other users can take your reservation and do it for themselves. If you do not state a time frame your reservation expires in exactly two hours.
3. Don't theorymon. Post Pokemon that you have experience with, or have seen it have quite some use, don't pull Pokemon out of nowhere that you think will work well. Have some experience first please.
4. Explain how and why the Pokemon you chose works well. For example, offensive synergy in terms of checks and counters or defensive synergy in terms of typing and checking threats.
5. Be nice to others with your posts and only post meaningful things. One-liners clutter up the thread, as do random memes.
6. Calculations are nice to back your claim, but not mandatory.
7. This project is meant to be a learning experience for battlers of all experience levels, so don't hesitate to post even if you don't know the meta that much.

Week 10

You have a week to discuss possible partners. Have fun. :)

Taking Swanna

Swanna @ Life Orb
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Scald
- Defog
- Roost

Piloswine is prone to both being worn down by hazards in addition to having several common weaknesses. Swanna can utilize Defog in order to prevent Piloswine from being worn down so much, while also being able to switch into powerful Fighting, Fire, Steel, and Water attacks while also being able to take down several physically bulky Pokemon. In return, Piloswine takes on the Electric types that plague Swanna, while also being able to take on Pokemon such as Rapidash and Dodrio.

Insert Anty set here (Floatzel) @ Absorb Bulb
Ability: Water Veil
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Electric
- Baton Pass
Piloswine is normally handled by strong water attacks from the likes of simipour and politoed. If you're lame and suck at this game (i.e. Twix ) you give something boring like Roselia. Absorb bulb floatzel can capitalize on those water type attackers by getting that nice +1 boost and proceeding to either dent teams or pass it out to a teammate while you run for your life. Float can also check the best pilo counter in the tier aka rotom-f because it can take a blizzard and cant get burned so they need to volt on a pilo to actually catch you. Meanwhile Pilo has an elec immunity and counters zebra for float, while also hitting grasses for SE damage, although you guys still cant switch in.

reserving jumpluff. gonna go to sleep now so ill post in 10 hours or so

Jumpluff_BW.gif

Jumpluff
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Seed Bomb
- Acrobatics
- Swords Dance/U-Turn

Jumpluff is a great partner for Piloswine for a number a reasons. First off, their defensive synergy is great: Piloswine takes the Ice hits for Jumpluff and threatens Electric switch-ins, and Jumpluff takes the Fighting, Grass, and Water that are aimed at Piloswine. Jumpluff also appreciates the Stealth Rocks that Piloswine likes to put up to better sweep after a SD. A lot of common checks and counters to Piloswine, such as Simipour and Machoke, are also outsped and beaten by Jumpluff. Machoke in particular is threatened by Jumpluff since Jumpluff resists Close Combat and doesn't have an item to Knock Off. Jumpluff can even put threats to sleep for Piloswine. Piloswine, in turn, can take on Zebstrika, who is a common answer to Jumpluff, and other common switch-ins. Both pokes are great offensive utility that can play into each other's strengths.

Also, I have SD as the first cut so that Jumpluff can better utilize the rocks that Piloswine has, but U-Turn is also a great option for catching Ice and Electric types that want to switch in.

Hey Twix and ExplosiveChaos just a reminder that you reserved something but you didn't give the explanation for your Pokemon. Also to everyone else; you have two days left to get your submissions in!

Vullaby as a partner for Piloswine:

Vullaby @ Eviolite
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Roost
- Whirlwind
- Foul Play

This core should be fairly obvious, but you can use this core on Bulky Offense or Balance teams in order to both set Stealth Rock with Piloswine and remove hazards on your side with Vullaby. Vullaby beats a lot of physical threats 1 on 1 that would normally scare out Piloswine, while Piloswine can act as a dedicated switch-in to offensive electrics that would otherwise beat Vullaby, like standard Zebstrika. In terms of type synergy, Piloswine is immune to Electric and resists Ice via Thick Fat for Vullaby, while in return Vullaby resists Grass for Piloswine.

AA Duosion can easily setup on Piloswine, so I gave Vullaby Whirlwind here. If you're building Balance, Whirlwind is an especially great option for preventing your opponent from setting up on you. But, if you aren't worried about a situation like that, U-Turn, Toxic, Knock Off, and even some lesser used options like Tailwind or Brave Bird can be used instead of Whirlwind.

If you wanted to build with this core, Piloswine and Vullaby appreciate partners that can take advantage of Jumpluff's absence as they both easily beat Jumpluff. Additionally, given Piloswine beats Zebstrika fairly easily, Water types that are slower than Zebstrika (Simipour, Floatzel) could be nice additions as well.

Roselia is a great partner for Piloswine.

Roselia @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 248 HP / 232 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Spikes/Toxic Spikes
- Synthesis

OR

Roselia @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 208 HP / 252 SpA / 48 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Sludge Bomb
- Sleep Powder/Spikes/Toxic Spikes
- Synthesis/Sleep powder

Roselia and Piloswine work great together both defensively and offensively.

Defensively
Roselia covers Piloswine's Water, Grass and, Fighting weaknesses really well.
Piloswine covers Roselia's Ice, weakness.
Roselia can set Toxic Spikes along with Piloswines Stealth Rock to weaken opposing teams.

Offensively
Roselia beats the Water Types and opposing Pilioswine that give Piloswine trouble.
Piloswine beats the Flying, Steel and, Poison types that give Roselia trouble.
Roselia can Sleep a Pokemon making it easier for Piloswine to switch in and get a kill. Spike or Toxic Spike the opposing team which racked with Stealth Rock and Sleep Powder can be devastating for the opposition.

As you can see they cover many flaws the others have really really well and add to the benefits they both bring. With Roselia and piloswine being some of the best Pokemon in PU this is incredible considering there benefits are high and there flaws are low. This is a pretty standard core that doesn't need much support to function on a high level as will be indicated by the calcs I will provide.

calling bullshit that absorb bulb float wasn't added and reserving swanna

Swanna @ Life Orb
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Scald
- Roost
- Defog
This is specifically for sub salac simi
So simipour is really versatile and can get slapped on a shit ton of teams so this goes with the sweeper set. It likes hazard removal, especially Tspikes, but the main attraction is how you play vs Politoed. This thing counters sub salac simipour, but is usually the main water switch-in. It cant come in on swanna safely, meaning you can either weaken enough/eliminate toed or get some kills since they don't have a good option. Also it's water spam without double rose weak things which sucks

Taking Raichu as a partner

Raichu @ Life Orb
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt

NP Raichu and Simipour form a really good core, as they can take on a lot of threats for each other. Raichu can beat a lot of special walls that Simi can't break such as Roselia and Grumpig (if Simi is lacking Knock Off) and Regice and Lickilicky (if Simi is lacking Low Kick). Raichu also helps Simi with its ability, which makes it imune to electric attacks and also gets a spa boost if hit by one. Simi can also take out piloswine for Raichu (Raichu can take out alone, but rely on Focus Blast's acc isn't the most recommended thing), all stunfisk's variants (can't switch on discharge, but can 2hko Specially def variant and ohko defensive variants with lo hydro) and ground types in general that may bother Raichu.

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Grumpig: 200-238 (54.9 - 65.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu Focus Blast vs. 32 HP / 0 SpD Regice: 289-341 (93.5 - 110.3%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Lickilicky: 395-465 (93.1 - 109.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Roselia: 148-177 (48.6 - 58.2%) -- 96.9% chance to 2HKO

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Clefairy: 187-222 (54.3 - 64.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Simipour Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Piloswine: 385-455 (95.2 - 112.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Life Orb Simipour Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Stunfisk: 385-455 (91.2 - 107.8%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Life Orb Simipour Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk: 281-330 (66.5 - 78.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Hi, sorry for that. I forgot about this thread. Anyway the next Pokemon we will discuss is

Stunfisk.

Good Luck. You have a week. Also I would like to see a little more activity if possible.

Taking Vullaby.

Vullaby @ Eviolite
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpD / 252 Def
Bold Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost
- Whirlwind / U-Turn
- Defog

Vullaby and Stunfisk is a really good for a lot of reasons, let's just see some.
  • Stunfisk can provide Rocks and Vullaby can provide a much-needed Defog support, as Stunfisk doesn't like to take residual damage, as it lacks reliable recovery;
  • Vullaby can check a lot of physical threats that specially defensive Stunfisk can't, such as Stoutland, while Stunfisk can counter a lot of Electric-types that threaten Vullaby;
  • Vullaby can provide a way of dealing with set-up sweepers in Whirlwind, specially Substitute ones, and more specially, Substititute ones that Stunfisk can't break or a slow way of momentum in U-turn;
  • Have a good synergy, with Stunfisk being imune to Electric and resisting Rock, while Vullaby is imune to Ground and resists Grass.
Some calcs to prove how much bulky Vullaby is and how much Stunfisk can support it:

+2 252 Atk Mold Breaker Fraxure Outrage vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 211-249 (61.5 - 72.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 0- Atk Vullaby Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Fraxure: 256-303 (93.7 - 110.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

+6 252+ Atk Linoone Extreme Speed vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 220-261 (64.1 - 76%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+6 0- Atk Vullaby Foul Play vs. 172 HP / 44 Def Linoone: 631-744 (185.5 - 218.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 141-166 (41.1 - 48.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0- Atk Vullaby Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Stoutland: 166-196 (53.3 - 63%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Choice Band Dodrio Brave Bird vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vullaby: 151-178 (44 - 51.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0- Atk Vullaby Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dodrio: 184-217 (70.4 - 83.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Life Orb Zebstrika Overheat vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk: 96-114 (22.7 - 27%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Stunfisk Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zebstrika: 236-278 (81 - 95.5%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk: 192-229 (45.4 - 54.2%) -- 46.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Stunfisk Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Raichu: 194-230 (74.3 - 88.1%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Mr. Mime Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Stunfisk: 90-106 (21.3 - 25.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Stunfisk Discharge vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mr. Mime: 63-75 (28.3 - 33.7%) -- 97.3% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
