Project PU Matchmaking! SuMo Hiatus

Politoed @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 SpA
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Encore
Politoed handles fire & strong water type moves aimed at Mawile (since Mawile doesn't take special water stab all that well), while taking out problematic ground (Golem) and steel (probopass) type Pokemon for Mawile. Politoed has solid bulk and hits decently hard even without a boosting item. Running Mawile + Politoed helps out sweepers who struggle with Pelipper and co. (ie; Monferno) as Politoed effectively lures in Pelipper, allowing you to easily dispatch or weaken it with HP-Electric.

This core struggles with electric type Pokemon. Adding a soft check such as Cryogonal helps with this, as well as providing rapid spin support and fixes the slow nature of the core thus far.

Sorry this is a little late! Been pretty busy for the past few days.

Vote for your two favorite submissions!

Nominating Audino

Audino @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Knock Off
- Encore

"It certainly needs something to take special hits"; what better mon than Audino? Maybe Muk, but pairing Mawile with a Wish Passer is invaluable for something that lacks reliable recovery but repeatedly checks some of the tiers scariest attackers in Stoutland and Leafeon. Fairly straightforward core that's able to check a significant portion of the tier.
Standard Defensive Vibrava

Vibrava @ Eviolite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD or 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Earthquake
- U-Turn

So Vibrava is a nice switch-in to mons that would threaten defensive Mawile such as Golem, Stunfisk, Camerupt, Monferno (or other fires like Rapidash or Ninetales). In turn, Mawile checks wallbreakers that beat Vibrava like Band Leaf or Band Stout as 5gen mentioned above. What this core has is the ability to gain momentum: Mawile can Baton Pass, while Vibrava can U-Turn. As a result the combination of these two mons won't be costing momentum anytime soon.

Of course this core doesn't really check waters or electrics too well, but of course you'd have teammates to deal with them. The nice thing about Vibrava is that it can be customized to be PhysDef or SpDef even though the SpDef has fallen out of popularity lately. So, depending on the team, Vibrava can be EVed to deal with certain threats. (Just a thought that popped into my mind, Mawile+Vibrava+Chinchou seems like it has perfect synergy typing wise; looks kinda interesting)

Stoutland @ Choice Band
Ability: Scrappy
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Frustration
- Facade
- Superpower
- Crunch

Stout is a great pairing with SD pass Mawile. +2 Stoutland is stupidly powerful and impossible to switch in to. The core gives decent role compression as well as it provides a normal resist, rocks setter, and a stallbreaker. This set can also be used with a Choice Scarf to clean but I prefer this core on some kind of normal spam team with a Scarf Dodrio as Stoutland will break most normal resists and makes Dodrio's job very easy.

Grumpig @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psyshock
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Focus Blast

Sub Calm Mind Grumpig is a great partner for Mawile as it can lure in or just set up on Probopass which Mawile fears getting trapped from, it can also lure Pokemon like Pawniard and Cacturne who Mawile also struggles with. Grumpig can check Fire Types that Mawile hates like SD Monferno or Simisear. Vice versa Mawile helps out Grumpig a lot by setting up Stealth Rock to weaken Grumpig's checks and Toxicing Pokemon to allow for easier Set-up. On top of this Mawile switches in on a lot of Grumpig's checks like Stoutland, Leafeon and Dodrio.
Defensive Prinplup

Prinplup @ Eviolite
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Defog
- Toxic
- Yawn/Signal Beam/Stealth Rock
Prinplup was the chosen partner as Mawile typically struggles switching into ground types and fire types. Prinplup helps by switching in to non-wild charge Rapidash variants/Golem/Monferno/Etc. Mawile also alleviates pressure of Prinplup by switching into Stoutland and if Mawile runs Stealth Rocks then it free's up a moveslot for Prinplup. This core basically allows for a lot of useful role compression.

Altaria @ Yache Berry
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 64 HP / 252 Atk / 192 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Roost

Altaria and Mawile have great defensive synergy and Mawile can help remove troublesome fairies with Iron Head. Mawile can also pass SDs to Altaria, which gets really scary with just one Dragon Dance (at +3 attack.) Altaria can also stomach attacks from Electric types that scare Mawile.

Pelipper @ Leftovers
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn

Pelipper and Mawile both have great defensive synergy with each other. On one hand, Pelipper is a great check to common Fire, Steel and Ground types such as Monferno, no WC Rapidash, Camerupt, Pawniard, Vibrava, etc. On another hand, Mawile is able to switch on powerful wallbreakers such as Stoutland, Leafeon, and Dodrio effectively and potetially get a free Knock Off on an incoming switch, which alleviates pressure from Pelipper. This core also provides momentum for the rest of the team through U-Turn and Baton Pass.

This core still struggles against Electric types, specifically Stunfisk since it checks both Mawile and Pelipper. Rock types like Golem and Probopass can pose a threat too since Pelipper cannot OHKO them and they threaten both mons with STAB or coverage moves. But that's why it's a team of 6 and not 2~

Politoed @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 SpA
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Encore

And with that, Slowbroth wins again (stop being so good broth lol). The runner up is EnemyJurist! Congrats to both you nerds... again.

This week, we're back to offense with a mon that has been very good in this meta.

Monferno @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Flare Blitz
- Mach Punch

A great wallbreaker in the current metagame, Swords Dance Monferno checks many common threats, such as Cacturne and Leafeon. It has powerful priority and almost-unresisted, very powerful STAB. Despite it being slow and lacking power without an Adamant nature, it continues to thrive in a metagame where it is the only Fighting-type. What will you pair with Swords Dance Monferno?

The deadline for submissions is Thursday.

Take Azelfie

More flags more fun

Lumineon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
- Defog
- Scald
- U-turn
- Toxic

Lumineon likes Monferno checking Leafeon and other Grass-types and Lumineon can check stuff like offensive water types that outspeed it. Lumineon also provides a momentum to check Monferno in on stuff like Leafeon or Cacturne so it can SD and sweep. It also weakens Stunfisk a little bit if that counts.

Arbok @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 76 HP / 252 Atk / 180 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Sucker Punch
- Earthquake
- Coil

Shuca Arbok lures and weakens common checks to Monferno, ie; Stunfisk, Grumpig, Pelipper, Swanna, and Mr. Mime. The ev spread lets it outpace fast colbur Grumpig letting you kill it with Gunk shot. Arbok helps Monferno set up easier and have a better chance at cleaning late game due to the fact that they both share similar checks.

Rotom-Frost @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Trick
- Blizzard
- Thunderbolt

Rotom-F is a great partner for Monferno as it can weaken or threaten most of its checks and counters. For example, Rotom can Volt Switch repeatedly on Grumpig and Scarf allows it to outspeeds Floatzel. Rotom threatens Defensive Waters like Pelipper and Lumineon who like to switch in on Monferno but also Rotom threatens ground types like Stunfisk and Hippo who are good counters as well. Not only this but Rotom pivots on pokemon like Audino allowing for a good opportunity to SD for Monferno.

Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Calm Nature
- Moonblast
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Knock Off

Clefairy is a great partner for Monferno because it can come in and wall/cripple a vast majority of Monferno's checks. Hippopotas, Stunfisk, Lumineon, Prinplup, Vibrava, Gabite, Pelipper, and even Dusknoir and Duosion to an extent have trouble getting past Clefairy thanks to its sizable bulk and amazing ability in Magic Guard. Clefairy also has a plethora of options as it's last two moveslots depending on your teams needs. Thunder Wave can cripple switch ins and make Monferno's job of sweeping easier. Stealth Rock can be used so that your normal resist is free to run a set without rocks(i.e. CB Golem or RestTalk Metang). Knock Off takes items off Specs or LO users making it easier for Clef to wall them or knocks Eviolite off of switch ins like Metang or Roselia. Encore is a bit of a niche option but let's it check CM Duosion for Monferno. CM Clefairy also makes a great partner for Monferno but I chose Spdef simply because it provides more utility to help Monferno sweep.

Sorry this is late. Yesterday was very stressful. Vote for your one favorite partner to SD Monferno!!!!
