Designed from the ground-up as a VGC Pokemon... and you know what? They actually did a good job this time. Symbiosis has always been a gimmick, but Inner Focus and Telepathy are both great VGC abilities, 90/80/110 bulk is really great, and Instruct seems like a very good move. It also can set up Trick Room while being slow itself, (and having a decent special attack of 90 so it can actually do some damage once its set up,) and Foul Play is always a good move for a bulky Pokemon to have. Did I mention it gets dual screens on top of this? I imagine the only reason it didn't get Fake Out is just so it wouldn't be on every single team.

Bye bye Girafarig in Singles. Doubles it looks pretty damn cool as well. Moon players actually got the better choice, unfortunate as I picked Sun, but still.

Other than VGC formats I dont see this pokemon very good. It is mostly outclassed by Meloetta. It has some cool moves like foul play, stored power and psychic terrain but thats about it.

How is instruct not a worse encore? Am I missing something?
Encore makes the targeted Pokemon use the same move for the next few turns as if they were holding a choice item. Instruct makes the targeted Pokemon use its most recent move immediately, even if they have already acted that turn. Its main use is in Doubles, where Oranguru can essentially give up his turn in exchange for his teammate attacking twice in one turn. It's sort of like an improved Helping Hand.

yeah, this is going to be a staple. it's not that it's particularly powerful on its own (though it looks like it'd be a solid pick for a special wall in lower tier singles play), but there's too many potential uses in taking your partner's powerful move and doubling it over, and that utility can easily cover any single offensive play imaginable.

this is probably the best competitive-first design gamefreak's ever done, i dig it

worth noting that this gets trick room, which is huge for vgc because of telepathy and instruct allowing it to enable pokemon like mudsdale/gastrodon/vikavolt to spam their earthquake/surf/discharge with impunity. it gets after you as well, which is really nice for helping faster pokemon on your side to function while trick room is up. a likely staple for next year's circuit

It could also run Inner Focus if your not massive on spread moves. A flinch immune trick room setter is quite nice.

I'm guessing Instruct doesn't work with Z-Moves, but man that move sounds good anyway. Loving the stat distribution, and it has a decent SpA with access to some cool special moves, along with Nasty Plot.

Looking forward to using this in VGC.

OK, so this is a bit gimmicky, but if you had Oranguru, Oricorio and Volcarona in Triples, could the following happen?

Volcarona used Quiver Dance!
Volcarona's Special Attack rose! Volcarona's Special Defense rose! Volcarona's Speed rose!
[Oricorio's Dancer!]

Oricorio used Quiver Dance!
Oricorio's Special Attack rose! Oricoro's Special Defense rose! Oricoro's Speed rose!

Oranguru used Instruct!

Oricorio still gets its own move too.

What about the move Quash? I'm not very familiar with VGC, but I love this pokemon so much I'll maybe get into it. Wouldn't making a target pokemon go last have some use? I only imagine it would be hard to fit it into 4MSS.

It's entirely possible. Or it could happen in doubles (somehow).
Or... what if you could instruct an Oricorio copying a dancing move through Dancer?
hm...

So, what sets would work for singles? EV Spread? Focus on being a special wall? Maybe still function as a trick room setter because of Inner Focus.

Defensive with decent Special Attack but a bit of a dead zone Speed (too slow normally, too fast for Trick Room).

Utilities first, we obviously have Instruct but there's also After You, Taunt, Quash, Nasty Plot, Calm Mind, Trick Room, dual screens, and Substitute. But it has a usable Special Attack for those moments its partner is doing something it can't Instruct them to do again (or for some reason is battling alone) so how about some attacks. STAB has reliable Psychic or Psyshock but you can go for Stored Power if your buffing a lot (it also gets Future Sight though its more of a tool to force a switch). It also gets some coverage with Thunderbolt/Thunder, Shadow Ball, Focus Blast, and Energy Ball. All its Egg Moves also have some use though I imagine most would want Psychic Terrain.

Honestly I think one thing that'll determines Oranguru's use would be if Instruct has negative priority. Now if it doesn't that's not the end, you'll just need to minimize Speed as much as possible and there will be some Pokemon who can't partner with Oranguru. Also the partner being used would determine whether its worth having them move again or would it have been better to just have another strong Pokemon using another move (whether it be another strong attack or a status move to do a set up).

Turn 1:
Oranguru used Trick Room
Wishiwashi used Protect

Turn 2:
Wishiwashi used Earthquake
Oranguru used Instruct on Wishiwashi
Wishiwashi used Earthquake

(And Telepathy protects Harambe from the spread.)

This is going to be disgusting in Doubles.

VGC 17 Trick Room

Oranguru(Sitrus Berry)
Bold
Inner Focus/Telepathy

252 HP
252 Def
4 SpAtk

Protect
Trick Room
Instruct
Psychic

Thoughts?

The fact that it's faster than most TR abusers is good. .. this has to go second to use Instruct without it failing

Quash has Neutral Priority, so it's still pretty garbage without Prankster.
