Monotype Viability Rankings

Hello and welcome to Monotype Theorymon! The idea of this project is to see your ideas and how creative you can be about giving Pokemon something they don't have and how that would help itself or the type more better or more viable. Anyone can participate. Discussions and feedback and encouraged and you can contribute to these without submitting your own ideas.

Every five days, I will choose a type and your goal is to pick a Pokemon of that type that's C Rank or below (can be Unranked) and give it a typing, an ability or moves that it doesn't normally get and explain how it would help out the Pokemon and/or the typing. The reason the Pokemon has to be ranked C or below is because the higher ranked Pokemon already have things going for it and usually don't need much improvement. Sometimes there will be exceptions though if the idea is really cool and would do a lot for the Pokemon and the type itself. Try not to go above B Rank though as it won't be much fun to make those Pokemon even better. After five days there will be a voting period that will last a few days. You will be able to vote for up to two ideas and the winner will be featured in the Hall of Fame which will be included below. After the voting period a new cycle will start where we do the same thing for another type.

Rules and tips:
  • Don't submit ideas for Pokemon that are already pretty viable in the current metagame. This project wants to focus mostly on ideas that would improve Pokemon who are underused, outclassed and don't have much going for it.
  • Make sure your ideas don't include extreme buffs such as Huge Power Slaking, Boomburst Meloetta etc.
  • When making changes to a Pokemon, don't focus only on improving what the Pokemon already does. You could make it work differently by changing it's moves, ability, typing and let it do more than it normally does.
  • When submitting an idea, don't just list four moves and an ability you would put on it. Make sure you list it like it's in your teambuilder, with the stats, name, item and all of that.
  • Give a description on how the changes you made help the Pokemon and the typing that the specific cycle focuses on.
  • Don't insult other people for their ideas even if you think it's bad. Let the voting period decide that.
  • Editing your idea is allowed as long as it's not during the voting period.
  • The same Pokemon can be posted more than once by different people as long as the sets aren't the same.
  • You can only give Pokemon a boost in it's stats as long as it's something minor like a small boost in speed, HP etc. This is because any Pokemon can become viable with a huge boost in stats. If you're changing stats tho make sure you mention what the Pokemon's stat would be after the changes you made.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me on PS! or here on Smogon.

Cycle 1: Water

Water is the most diverse type in the game and it has so many options. It's gonna be interesting to see what people come up with for the underused and less viable Pokemon. Check out the Monotype Viability Rankings on the top of the first post to get a clue of what Pokemon to submit your ideas for.

Looking forward to seeing some cool ideas.

You have until Friday 27/05/2016.

(changes in bold)
Qwilfish @ Focus Sash
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes / Toxic Spikes
- Explosion
- Taunt
Stat Changes: +5 Base speed (Base 90)
With 5 more speed and access to the best hazard, Qwilfish becomes a much better suicide lead. If this was to happen, then Hyper Offense water might become more popular because their hazard setter wouldn't ruin the momentum. Keldeo loves hazards, so it would be a good partner for Qwilfish. Base 90 speed would allow it to outspeed more mons, and not just set 1 layer of spikes or stealth rock and then die.

Defiant Floatzel

Floatzel @ Life Orb
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Ice Punch

Defog is one of the most common moves nowadays, especially on types like Flying that are weak to Stealth Rock and have no decent access to Rapid Spin. Water teams have access to every kind of hazard, but due to Defog's popularity, they have very few ways of ensuring their hazards stay on the field. Bisharp has found a very prominent niche on Steel and Dark teams by punishing the opponent with a free boost to its attack whenever Defog is used on it. Currently the only Water type pokemon with that same ability, Defiant, is Empoleon, which is far better suited to using special attacks anyway. If a pokemon like Floatzel had Defiant, it would provide Water teams with a parallel to Bisharp and a fairly reliable way of dealing with the metagame's best defoggers. In addition, Floatzel's speed tier is outstanding (base 115), allowing it to outspeed almost all unboosted threats and giving it opportunities to sweep if it can get to +2 attack. Of course Floatzel would benefit as well by gaining an effective way of boosting its attack, which it normally can't do.

A few calcs to show how Floatzel could deal with prominent defoggers:

+2 252 Atk Life Orb Floatzel Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Zapdos: 421-497 (109.6 - 129.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Floatzel Crunch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Mew: 390-460 (96.5 - 113.8%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Floatzel Crunch vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Latias: 426-502 (117 - 137.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Floatzel Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 165-196 (49.4 - 58.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Water / Dragon Milotic

Bulky Mixed Wall
Milotic @ Leftovers / Safety Goggles (helps check Breloom)
Ability: Marvel Scale
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Scald
- Dragon Tail / Haze
- Mirror Coat / Toxic
- Recover
Probably the best set out of the three here, this would fit well on balanced to stall Water teams. Not a whole lot like taking it on I think, and it has the luxury of reliable recovery unlike Lanturn, and Mirror Coat is always appreciated. Lots of Defense + Safety Goggles help Milotic counter Jolly Sash Breloom, or at least deal with it if need be.

252 Atk Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (3 hits) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Milotic: 153-183 (38.9 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Mega Venusaur Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Milotic: 106-126 (26.9 - 32%) -- 43% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Milotic: 153-181 (38.9 - 46%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Competitive Special Attacker
Milotic @ Leftovers / Life Orb
Ability: Competitive
EVs: 88 HP / 252 SpA / 168 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald / Hydro Pump
- Dragon Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Recover / Magic Coat
Kinda cool, beats Zapdos and Skarmory and a bunch of other random stuff I guess. Magic Coat is a neato hazard deterrent as well. EV spread outspeeds Breloom by 2 points.

Coil Setup
Milotic @ Leftovers
Ability: Marvel Scale
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Impish Nature
- Coil
- Dragon Tail
- Scald / Rest
- Recover / Sleep Talk
Needs hazards and stuff to work well, but seems like it wouldn't be terrible. Monoattacking with DTail is kinda sketchy since Fairies stand in its way though, so Scald + Recover can be used if you don't like RestTalk, which does use Marvel Scale.

Milotic kinda sucks in the metagame just because there's so much competition between Water-types, but with a secondary Dragon typing, it can help check both Water- and Grass-types in one slot pretty well, since it has nice defenses and reliable recovery. I think it can beat Mega Venusaur 1v1, along with Thundurus-I and other threats. Compressing the Grass and Electric check into one mon does open up team building, even if it doesn't have immunities like Lanturn or Sap Sipper Azumarill. Alternatively, you could also make use of Competitive and use it as a way to help deter Defog, using a fun offensive set.

Sucker Punch Crawdaunt

Crawdaunt @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Aqua Jet
- Swords Dance
- Crabhammer/Knock Off

Helps out with fast Psychic types as well as counters Mega Gardevoir. Also provides double priority (STAB) and can potentially late game sweep many teams. This set would appreciate a hazard setter to make its job a bit easier. Other then that the reasoning is pretty straight forward.

252 Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Victini: 432-510 (126.6 - 149.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 361-426 (119.9 - 141.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Gardevoir: 307-361 (110.8 - 130.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Latios: 515-608 (172.2 - 203.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Medicham: 247-291 (94.6 - 111.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Magic Guard Vaporeon

Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 64 Def / 196 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Wish
- Acid Armor / Protect / Haze
- Baton Pass / Heal Bell / Toxic
(Other option: Substitute and Work Up)

Vaporeon @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Grass / Wish
- Protect

Introduction
Let's face it, Vaporeon is pretty bad. It's slow, Defense stat isn't all that great either, prone to residual damage, which makes it utilize Wish less effectively. But what if we give Vaporeon Magic Guard?

Why use Magic Guard?

With Magic Guard, Vaporeon can only take damage from direct attacks. This means that Vaporeon isn't affected by status ailments such as poison and burns. Additionally, it's unaffected by Leech Seed from the likes of Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Whimsicott. Most importantly, Vaporeon won't be bothered by entry hazards such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, and Toxic Spikes. This can really make Vaporeon an excellent status absorber for Water-type teams, as teammates really appreciate avoiding any status ailments that hinder their longevity, making it an excellent switch-in (with the exception of entry hazards).

Explain moveset?

Scald is always a nice move for Vaporeon to make use of with having a possible chance to burn the foe and crippling physical attackers. Always a good thing. Wish provides both Vaporeon and its teammates a reliable means a replenishing their health. With Vaporeon's impressive HP stat, Wish allows it to pass on bigger Wishes to its teammates to recover more than half of their health. Acid Armor is a great way for for Vaporeon to take hits from physical attackers more effectively. Vaporeon can freely set up Acid Armor without worrying about any status wearing it down. Protect gives Vaporeon a way to scout the foe's move for it to switch out into a more reasonable counter and a little more recovery from Leftovers. Haze, excellent way in removing any kind of stat boost from the opponent. Things like Swords Dance Mega Gallade, Mega Scizor, and Bisharp, Calm Mind Pokemon like Meloetta, Keldeo, Mega Gardevoir, Slowbro, and the Latitwins, Quiver Dance Volcarona, etc. Baton Pass, really nice for gaining momentum. Since Vaporeon is slow, and you use Wish before Baton Pass, your teammates can come in unharmed at no cost. Pretty nice for passing Acid Armor boosts, especially to sweepers. Heal Bell, makes Vaporeon a good cleric for its team. Toxic good for wearing down bulky Pokemon.

Substitute can be used with Baton Pass or even Work Up boosts to benefit your sweepers.

Life Orb set?

With Magic Guard as Vaporeon's ability, it does not take Life Orb damage. With a base 110 Special Attack, it can be used as a bulky offensive Pokemon. With a power increase from Life Orb, Vaporeon can also become a threat. All of its moves get a boost but Vaporeon doesn't take damage from Scald and Ice Beam. Hidden Power Grass be good coverage against Gastrodon, Seismitoad, and Water-types. There's Wish if you prefer recovery. Protect to waste a turn to get a Wish. It helps it check Dragonite, physical defensive variants of Zapdos, Thundurus, Mega Scizor, and more.

Calculations:

(Not doing the above set for Acid Armor because Vaporeon can pretty much tank a lot of attacks given that it's at +2. That's why the rest of the EVs go into Special Defense to also make it more specially bulky).

252 SpA Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 196 SpD Vaporeon: 178-210 (38.4 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Meloetta Hyper Voice vs. 248 HP / 196 SpD Vaporeon: 205-243 (44.2 - 52.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Venusaur Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 196 SpD Vaporeon: 194-230 (41.9 - 49.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Life Orb
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Victini: 330-393 (96.7 - 115.2%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 222-263 (81.9 - 97%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Thundurus: 302-356 (101 - 119%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Serperior: 260-307 (89.3 - 105.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Scald vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 437-515 (104 - 122.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Terrakion: 361-429 (111.7 - 132.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory: 220-261 (65.8 - 78.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Vaporeon Hidden Power Grass vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Swampert: 364-432 (90 - 106.9%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Downsides:
  • Vaporeon suffers from 4 moveslot syndrome, which means it can't utilize all the moves to its making.
  • Despite being immune to non attacking moves, paralysis can still affect it.
  • Vaporeon is vulnerable to Taunt users.
  • Some Pokemon such as specially defensive Zapdos and Mega Charizard Y can breakthrough it along with Electric-types.
  • Depending on whether or not you have Haze some Pokemon can set up on it such as Calm Mind users.

Cycle 2: Fighting

Fighting is the second most used type based on the usage stats so that's gonna be the type for this week. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Check out the Monotype Viability Rankings to get a clue of what Pokemon you should submit your ideas for.
You have until Friday 03/06/2016.

Pangoro @ Choice Band
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Drain Punch / Superpower
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Punch / Parting Shot / Basically any decent move because this thing has a damn good movepool
~~didnt steal this from aaa~~
Tough Claws Pangoro would make its wallbreaking capabilities even better. It also has a surprisingly good movepool (Edgequake, Ice Punch, etc.) and it'd be hard for your opponent to predict what it has outside of STAB. It also has a decent chance to OHKO Clefable which is amazing for fighting.

MY SUGGESTION HERE

Mienshaou (Ice/Fighting) @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator / Reckless
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Hi Jump Kick
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash
- Swords Dance / Knock off

Mienshaou already has a good BST, a good movepool, and excellent abilities. But it's let down by the lack of a secondary typing to abuse. Ice seems like a nice fit. It would let it lead and break mons it normally struggles with (Gliscor, Garchomp) while breaking mons like Hippo, phys defense zapdos, and other mons without risking misses or with HJK or Stone Edge. It gives fighting an edge against rough matchups against dragon and ground.

Ice shard or icicle crash make Mienshao much like SD Weavile, except with a wayyyyy scarier primary STAB to abuse (Reckless HJK > Knock off).

Edit: and are we able to do stat boosts? If so might as well give Mienshao 10 speed, let it outspeed the valuable 110 tier :P

65/90/115/45/115/70
Scrafty (Scrafty) @ Leftovers / Chople Berry
Ability: Shed Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD or 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Careful Nature / Jolly Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Bulk Up / Dragon Dance
- Drain Punch
- Iron Head / Poison Jab / Ice Punch

If Scrafty gets Sucker Punch, it would make fightings match up against Psychic way easier, as it can cripple or 2HKO Pokemon such as Victini, Hoopa Unbound and Gengar. With 70 Base Speed, Scrafty can outspeed Clefable, and Sylveon, aswell as Mega Gardevoir after one Dragon Dance. (Note: You wouldnt set up on Gardevoir, you'd set up against bulky mons such as Mew, Klefki and Deoxys-D).

252 Atk Scrafty Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Victini: 204-242 (59.8 - 70.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Scrafty Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Hoopa Unbound: 171-202 (56.8 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Scrafty Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 308-366 (118.9 - 141.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Scrafty Poison Jab vs. 16 HP / 8 Def Mega Gardevoir: 286-338 (101.7 - 120.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

have u ever picked up fighting and thought "wow! i should use something to beat fairy!" then picked up toxicroak, then realized that its hot garbage, even against fairy? ofc you have!
83/106/65/86/65/100
Toxicroak @ Life Orb/Focus Sash
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch / Bullet Punch

its frustrating that this is so fucking slow for an sd sweper (relies on sucker against even vaguely fast teams), as well as not even being that powerful compared to fighting's other options for sd sweepers. its also frustrating that you have literally 0 good fighting stab moves because its best moves are drain punch and cross chop. theres no reason it shouldnt get close combat. also it gets limber now partially because fuck twave and partially because it seems like its pretty nimble on its feet. it may because im drunk and its 2 am but i think that fighting frog seems pretty limber.

also here are some calcs
252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 424-502 (107.6 - 127.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 Atk Life Orb Toxicroak Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Klefki through Reflect: 184-217 (57.8 - 68.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 0- Atk Klefki Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Toxicroak: 138-163 (44.9 - 53%) -- 32% chance to 2HKO (i.e. croak kills it faster than it kills croak if you get close combat)

Edit: atk boost removed on request
