UU Mega Pidgeot

[OVERVIEW]

Mega Pidgeot's great Speed tier, amazing Flying offensive typing, and solid Special Attack make it a threatening attacker. No Guard gives Mega Pidgeot a 100% accurate Hurricane, which gives it something many special attacking Flying-types lack: a reliable, strong STAB move. Flying as an offensive typing is great, as few types resist it, although the types it hits super effectively are not very common. Mega Pidgeot also has solid coverage in Heat Wave, pivoting abilities in U-turn, and reliable recovery in Roost, giving it decent longevity and allowing it to fit on VoltTurn teams. Mega Pidgeot's flaws lie in its mediocre defensive typing, giving it very few useful resistances and a crippling weakness to Stealth Rock; its bulk is good enough to survive most neutral attacks, but not with Stealth Rock up, making entry hazard removal a priority on Mega Pidgeot teams. The high usage of Electric-types such as Rotom-W and Mega Manectric does Mega Pidgeot no favors either, as they resist its STAB attack and deal heavy damage in return with Volt Switch or OHKO with Thunderbolt. While No Guard gives Mega Pidgeot an accurate Hurricane, it also makes every inaccurate move hit Mega Pidgeot itself, which means it cannot dodge moves such as Fire Blast, Toxic, and Icicle Crash. It also faces indirect competition from other Mega Evolutions, such as Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Sharpedo, which are often faster and stronger than Mega Pidgeot.

Moves
========

Hurricane is Mega Pidgeot's main STAB move, dealing good damage to neutral targets and having a good chance to confuse the foe. Heat Wave hits Steel-types such as Mega Aggron and Scizor, 2HKOing the former and OHKOing the latter. U-turn keeps up momentum on Mega Pidgeot's defensive checks, like Rotom-W and Nihilego. Roost gives Mega Pidgeot some form of recovery to heal off Stealth Rock damage.

Set Details
========

A standard offensive spread of maximum Speed and Special Attack investment with a Timid nature allows Mega Pidgeot to hit as hard and as fast as possible. Mega Pidgeot's pre-Mega abilities are useless. Pidgeotite allows Pidgeot to Mega Evolve.

Usage Tips
========

Hurricane is the move you want to use the most because of the lack of Pokemon resisting it and its high Base Power. Don't attempt to switch Mega Pidgeot in on hits unless it absolutely has to, because it will fall to most decently powerful neutral hits with entry hazards up, when it would otherwise survive them. Instead, bring it in when a Pokemon faints or on a Volt Switch or U-turn. Use U-turn on Mega Pidgeot switch-ins, such as Nihilego, Blissey, and Rotom-W. Mega Pidgeot can survive some neutral hits, such as Cobalion's Close Combat and Mega Beedrill's Poison Jab, so try to keep Mega Pidgeot healthy enough to take these hits if necessary. Make sure that all entry hazards are removed from the field before sending Mega Pidgeot in, since it despises being worn down, which will prevent it from being able to take neutral hits.

Team Options
========

Mega Pidgeot fits best on offensive teams, as its Speed tier and strong STAB attack makes it effective against opposing offensive teams, although it is lacking in the stall matchup because of Blissey. Entry hazard setters such as Swampert, Klefki, and Tentacruel make for good teammates, since they can lay down Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes to wear down Mega Pidgeot's defensive answers. Electric-type checks such as Amoonguss, Seismitoad, and Mamoswine make for good teammates, as Mega Pidgeot appreciates their ability to sponge attacks from the likes of Rotom-W and Mega Manectric. Amoonguss's Spore is able to incapacitate foes to give Mega Pidgeot free turns as well, while Seismitoad is great at completely shutting down Rotom-W because of Water Absorb. Rock-type checks such as Scizor, Cobalion, and Swampert are also appreciated as teammates because they can switch in on Rock-types such as Nihilego, Mega Aerodactyl, and Terrakion, which Mega Pidgeot struggles against; Cobalion is also good at dealing with Blissey, Snorlax, and Porygon2. Entry hazard removers such as Starmie and Latias fit well on the types of teams that Mega Pidgeot finds itself on; these Pokemon can ensure that Mega Pidgeot is not worn down by Stealth Rock. Dragon-types such as Latias and Hydreigon can switch in on Electric-type moves from the likes of Mega Manectric and Rotom-W, as well as lure in Blissey and remove it with moves such as Psyshock and Superpower, respectively. They also appreciate Mega Pidgeot's ability to wear down Steel-types such as Mega Aggron and Mega Steelix. Volt Switch and U-turn users such as Rotom-W, Scizor, and Hydreigon can also form a VoltTurn core with Mega Pidgeot to give each other momentum and wear down defensive Pokemon.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Hyper Beam can surprise Rotom-W with an OHKO, but it makes Mega Pidgeot huge setup fodder afterwards. Hidden Power Ground can hit Nihilego, Magneton, and Empoleon, but that's about it. An alternative take to on Mega Pidgeot could be in the form of a Work Up + Refresh set with Roost, as it's capable of setting up on defensive Pokemon and avoiding status, but there are often more convenient and capable stallbreakers out there, like Gliscor and Crawdaunt.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-types**: Electric-types such as Mega Manectric, Choice Scarf Magneton, and Rotom-W can switch into Mega Pidgeot and gain momentum on it with Volt Switch or OHKO it with Thunderbolt.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Nihilego and Mega Aerodactyl can survive at least one hit from Mega Pidgeot and OHKO it in return with a super effective STAB attack or set up Stealth Rock on it.

**Priority**: Priority users such as Mamoswine, Scizor, and Klefki can either OHKO, heavily damage, or paralyze Mega Pidgeot before it can retaliate with Hurricane or Heat Wave.

**Special Walls**: Special walls such as Blissey, Empoleon, Porygon2, and Alolan Muk can easily survive repeated hits from Mega Pidgeot and set up entry hazards, cripple it with Toxic, or trap it with Pursuit.

**Choice Scarf Users and Faster Attackers**: Faster attackers such as Choice Scarf Infernape, Choice Scarf Hydreigon, Mega Beedrill, Mega Sceptile, and +1 Mega Sharpedo outspeed and can OHKO or heavily damage Mega Pidgeot with a strong STAB move, although most are incapable of OHKOing it without Stealth Rock or a small amount of chip damage.

--overview--

specify special flying types, because many physical flying types have brave bird which is reliable and strong

"circumvent some checks" - be more specific/give examples

Mega pidge isn't really THAT frail, its bulk is ok for an offensive pokemon, so i'd rephrase the "it will often be OHKOd in return" part to reflect that it can at least take some neutral hits

--moves--

mention work up refresh in OO rather than here

--team options--

name the playstyles that mpidge generally fits on as a first point (Considering you have hippowdon as an example, i'd assume you're going to put balance here. If you don't think it fits well on balance remove the hippo mentions.)

definitely add seismitoad if you're talking rotom-w checks

add scizor as a rock-type check, probably over hippo

--other options--

work up refresh here

HP ground also hits empoleon super effectively i guess.

--checks and counters--

specify choice scarf mangeton in the elecs section

terrakion is kinda ehh, just maero and nihilego are probably fine here since those are the rocks that actually resist flying

put empoleon in special walls

add mbee/mscept in faster attackers, as they can revenge kill a weakened pidge easily

Overview:

Reword the bullet point about its defensive typing. The reason it's susceptible to priority (other than Mamoswine's Ice Shard) isn't because of its defensive typing, it's because its average bulk and Stealth Rock weakness means it isn't hard to bring it into revenge killing range.

Mention how good Flying is as an offensive type.

Special Attacker:

Hazard removers deserve a bullet point in Team Options, as do Dragon-types like Latias and Hydreigon, which can switch in on Electric-type attacks for Mega Pidgeot and remove Blissey with the appropriate, though somewhat niche, move (Psyshock in Latias's case, Superpower in Hydreigon's).

Other Options

Refresh + Work Up deserves its own set.

Edit: The QC team has discussed the situation and come to the consensus that Work Up + Refresh should remain in Other Options. QC 2/3 once the rest of the check is implemented.

This looks good, just mention that with dragons in team options that they appreciate bird beating down steel-types (and vice versa kinda, but like klefki doesnt like switching in risking heat wave). 3/3
