Week 2: Assault Vest Tangrowth

Tangrowth @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power Ice
- Earthquake
For week 2 we have standard Assault Vest Tangrowth! When equipped with an Assault Vest, Tangrowth is easily able to take power special attacks from the likes of Mega Alakazam, Latios, Magearna, and Tapu Koko, while still being able to take on other threats such as Landorus-T and Excadrill. Thanks to its Regenerator ability, this set is also an excellent pivot, being able to easily switch in and out numerous times throughout the course of the match and making it a defensive threat to be reckoned with. You have 4 days to post your nominations.

Reserving Dragonium Z Zygarde.

Dragonium Z Zygarde

Zygarde @ Dragonium Z
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant/Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Thousand Arrows
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed

Usually, Tangrowth is one of the best check to DD Zygarde; it can only be 2HKO'd by a +1 Outrage, and it can 2HKO Zygarde with HP Ice. Furthermore, if it gets too weakened, Tangrowth can pivot out to get Regenerator recovery, allowing it to stay healthy for longer to prevent Zygarde from sweeping. However, when holding the Dragonium Z, Zygarde can actually OHKO (most of the time) Tangrowth after Stealth Rock with a +1 Devastating Drake, allowing Zygarde to sometimes sweep, considering a lot of teams rely on Tangrowth to check Zygarde. With an Adamant nature, Zygarde has better odds of OHKOing Tangrowth, but a Jolly nature can be used to not 100% lose to Scarf Tapu Lele, although the odds of OHKOing Tangrowth are much lower.

+1 252+ Atk Zygarde Devastating Drake (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 349-412 (86.3 - 101.9%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 Atk Zygarde Devastating Drake (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 319-376 (78.9 - 93%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Got sniped LOL. I'll take Grassium Z SD Tapu Bulu.

Tapu Bulu @ Grassium Z
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Wood Hammer
- Horn Leech
- Superpower

Normally, AV Tang can take hits from Bulu relatively easily. But with SD + Grassium Z boosted Wood Hammer it OHKO's AV Tang. Normally, Tang can take a +2 Horn Leech or even a +2 All-Out Pummeling, but it cannot take a +2 Bloom Doom. Tang can run (or bluff) sludge bomb on this set as well, so the Tang user may thing they force us out, and then you hit it with a Bloom Doom to kill it. This is a set that craing ;_; made (i believe), and its my personal favorite Bulu set atm. The link to a full post about it is here. Not the most orthodox lure, but it works because people like to leave in Tang vs. Bulu, even after an SD.

252+ Atk Tapu Bulu All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 187-221 (46.2 - 54.7%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth in Grassy Terrain: 210-248 (51.9 - 61.3%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery (does more than AoP)

+2 252+ Atk Tapu Bulu All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 374-440 (92.5 - 108.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO (has a chance to not kill)

+2 252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth in Grassy Terrain: 420-495 (103.9 - 122.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO (guarentees the kill)

Thundurus @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Fly
- Wild Charge
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Knock Off / Superpower

Although the set is known, it still might catch some Tangrowth by surprise with Supersonic Skystrike.

Max Attack to power up Supersonic Skystrike and its other physical moves, Defiant can help pressuring defoggers such as Tapu Fini. Wild Charge is a more spammable STAB move, HP ice to hit Landorus-T, Zygarde and Garchomp and the last move can be either Knock Off, which is mainly used to hit Psychic types harder and can remove items from a Pokemon that might switch in on it, like Chansey. Superpower can be used to hit Chansey, Ferrothorn and Excadrill harder.

252 Atk Thundurus Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 432-510 (106.9 - 126.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Electric]

The best Manaphy set for real, the idea is simple, +3 on the opponent's switch into Tangrowth, then hit them up with Subzero Slammer. Even Ice Beam into Subzero Slammer can take it out with some prior damage. Of course this set has a lot more applications in taking out Mega Venu and Ferrothorn, but this is the main use for it.

+3 252 SpA Manaphy Subzero Slammer (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 572-674 (141.5 - 166.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Manaphy Subzero Slammer (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 230-272 (56.9 - 67.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Manaphy Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 120-142 (29.7 - 35.1%) -- 16.6% chance to 3HKO

+3 252 SpA Manaphy Subzero Slammer (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 302-356 (85.7 - 101.1%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock (Just to show the set off lol)

Tangrowth can normally switch in freely into Garchomp, who cannot really harm it while unboosted. Swords Dance allows Garchomp to double its Atk, allowing Garchomp to turn the table on its switch-ins. Inferno Overdrive allows Garchomp to take out Tangrowth, Celesteela and Skarmory while Devastating Drake allows Garchomp to take out Zapdos and Tangrowth.

Flyinium Z Landorus-T

Landorus-Therian @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 28 SpD / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock/Toxic
- Earthquake
- Fly
- U-turn

0 Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 426-504 (105.4 - 124.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 232 HP / 180+ Def Venusaur: 452-534 (125.9 - 148.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 248 HP / 44 Def Amoonguss: 656-774 (152.2 - 179.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 160 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 462-546 (143.9 - 170%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Using Flyinium Z + Fly is also an option to surprise Tangrowth, Mega Venusaur, Tapu Bulu, Mega-Heracross and so on, which generally don't expect it from a more passive set.
In general, Flyinium Z has the advantage to punish Ground and Bug resists that carelessly switch into defensive Landorus-T. Nobody expects a Flying move from Landorus-T that, in general, has Ground+Rock+HP as coverage moves.

Toxic is slashed over SR if you already have a SR setter and want to use Toxic stall (with the aid of regular Fly) strategy towards some not-Poison bulky monsters.

Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Hydro Pump
- Secret Sword
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power [Electric] / Icy Wind

Normally a healthy AV Tang can take on Keldeo reasonably efficiently, taking advantage of the fact that they all run Scarf atm. Specs Keldeo takes advantage of this to consistently blast through AV Tangrowth, with Secret Sword doing 2HKOing after SR and Focus Blast 2HKOing regardless of prior damage. Beyond this, Keldeo is capable of singlehandedly shutting down the remarkably common TangTran cores which are running around all over the place, being able to come in on Tran, fearing little from it, and being able to click its choice of Fighting-type STAB without really facing much in the way of repercussions, taking advantage of the EZ Tran abuse combined with people's tendency to switch Growth into Keld.

Magearna @ Icium Z
Ability: Soul Heart
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Fire
- Trick Room

This set is really cool because Tangrowth walls Magearna pretty easily since it can sponge Twinkle Tackle and Corkscrew Crash, its two most common Z Moves then pivot out into a safer check since Magearna's Z-Crystal was revealed and regain health. With Icium Z though you blow Tangrowth nearly all the way back, having a 12.5% chance to KO it after rocks from full which means a small bit of prior damage should pretty much guarantee it. Gucci set overall but the Z Move itself is more or less situational, luring Tangrowth being the most prominent.

252+ SpA Magearna Subzero Slammer (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 304-358 (75.2 - 88.6%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Excadrill @ Buginium Z
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Att / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance/Rapid Spin
- Iron Head
- Earthquake
- X Scissor

Yo trust me this set is heat and has legit merit. On top of being able to comfortable 1v1 Tangrowth, who even with assault vest is one of its better switch ins, it also beats the plethora of bulky psychic types who are creeping into the tier and pose a major defensive threat to Excadrill. Savage Spin-Out is a totally unexpected coverage option on Driller but can do severe damage, while SD makes it easier, it is actually not necessary for the 2HKO, even when using Iron Head first - thus making it an even better lure, bluffing a scarf set. Min rolls = literally 100.1%

252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 111-132 (27.4 - 32.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 Atk Mold Breaker Excadrill Savage Spin-Out (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tangrowth: 294-348 (72.7 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Thundurus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice
- Sludge Wave

This set can come very handy for teams that don't have much trouble against Steel-types, but need pesky Fairy- and Grass-types like Koko (on the switch), Lele, Clefable, Bulu and this weak's threat, AV Tangrowth, out of the way. At +2, Thundurus actually OHKOes AV Tangrowth most of the time at full HP, only needing less than 6% of prior damage to guarantee the KO:

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Thundurus Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth: 380-447 (94 - 110.6%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

What's more is that NP Thundurus already deals with AV Tangrowth's usual teammates including but not limited to Heatran, Landorus-T, Toxapex and Garchomp, thusly showing its effectiveness and utility as an AV Tangrowth lure.
