[OVERVIEW]

Hydreigon's amazing offensive typing and great Special Attack stat make it very difficult to switch into. Additionally, its good defensive typing lets it resist moves from common Pokemon, such as Heatran, Hoopa-U, and Charizard, which makes it a great offensive Tailwind setter. However, its base 98 Speed, while not bad, is pretty slow. In addition, despite its solid set of resistances and good coverage, Hydreigon is incredibly susceptible to Fairy-types, which is especially unfortunate with the introduction of the island guardians. Mega Salamence being legal and the popularity of Zygarde also give Hydreigon heavy competition as a Dragon-type on a team. Despite this, Hydreigon's unique typing combined with its power and access to Tailwind makes it a great Pokemon on bulkier offense teams.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Draco Meteor and Dark Pulse are Hydreigon's two STAB moves and hit a lot of common Pokemon in the tier, such as Salamence and Aegislash, super effectively. However, keep in mind that Draco Meteor drops Hydreigon's Special Attack by two stages, and as such, Hydreigon will need to switch out afterwards. Tailwind is used to double Hydreigon and its teammates' Speed. Earth Power allows Hydreigon to hit Heatran and Tapu Koko super effectively. Protect shields Hydreigon from a super effective hit and can allow its partner to deal with the opposing Pokemon.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack EVs are needed so that Hydreigon can hit as hard as possible. Maximum Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Hydreigon to outrun unboosted Landorus-T and Timid Tapu Lele. Life Orb is the preferred item, as it allows Hydreigon to hit as hard as possible with its two STAB moves.

Usage Tips
========

Hydreigon does pretty well against Trick Room teams due to it being able to either threaten or wall common setters, such as Bronzong and Hoopa-U. Hydreigon works best mid- or late-game when the opponent's Pokemon are weakened. Try to preserve Hydreigon's health as much as possible so that it can punch more holes in the opponent's team, since it will get worn down easily with Life Orb recoil. If you have to switch Hydreigon in, switch it into weak, resisted hits, such as Heatran's Heat Wave or Milotic's Scald. Despite Draco Meteor's drawbacks, don't worry about the Special Attack drop, since Hydreigon's role is to punch holes. Hydreigon has a good typing, which lets it set Tailwind on common Pokemon, such as Heatran, Mega Charizard Y, and Hoopa-U. However, there isn't a need to always have Tailwind up, so only use it either when you need Hydreigon or one of its teammates to outrun an opponent's Pokemon or when it's late-game and your opponent's Pokemon are weakened. Don't get up Tailwind just for the sake of having Tailwind; sometimes it is better to just go for the attack.

Team Options
========

Steel-types, such as Heatran and Aegislash, can threaten common Fairy-types. Both Heatran and Aegislash also benefit greatly from Hydreigon's Tailwind. Genesect has access to U-turn, which allows it to pivot into Hydreigon. Hydreigon, in turn, beats Steel-types that Genesect has trouble with, such as Aegislash and Heatran, while Genesect can threaten Fairy-types such as the island guardians and KO Mega Salamence with Ice Beam. Mega Gengar threatens the island guardians, and Shadow Tag can trap opposing Pokemon that are weak to Hydreigon's attacks. Fairy-types, such as Tapu Lele and Tapu Bulu, appreciate Hydreigon's ability to break through Pokemon that threaten them, such as Gengar and Aegislash. Tapu Bulu additionally helps Hydreigon with Tapu Fini, whereas Tapu Lele can threaten common Dragon-types, such as Mega Salamence. Pokemon that struggle against Steel-types, such as Tapu Lele, Mega Metagross, and Deoxys-A are also great partners for Hydreigon.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Fire Blast allows Hydreigon to hit Ferrothorn and Celesteela for major damage. A bulkier set with Roost is an option if you need Hydreigon's power but don't necessarily need Tailwind. Dragonium Z gives Hydreigon a stronger Dragon-type STAB attack that doesn't have the drawbacks of Draco Meteor. Darkinium Z gives Hydreigon a much more powerful Dark-type STAB attack that lets it eliminate Pokemon such as Aegislash that would otherwise tank a Dark Pulse. Taunt is an option if Tailwind isn't needed.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-type Pokemon**: Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini, and Tapu Bulu can switch into Hydreigon's STAB attacks very easily and threaten it out with either a Fairy-type attack or Superpower in the latter's case. Azumarill can set up on Hydreigon and force it out with Play Rough.

**Dragon-type Pokemon**: Mega Salamence and Kingdra can force Hydreigon out with Draco Meteor.

**Fighting-type Pokemon**: While not as prominent as before, Fighting-types, such as Terrakion, are still used and can force out Hydreigon.

**Faster Pokemon**: Hydreigon's mediocre Speed leaves it susceptible to faster threats with super effective coverage, such as Deoxys-A, Mega Metagross, and Choice Scarf Landorus-T.

I've talked with QC and the set should be:

name: Special Attacker
move 1: Draco Meteor
move 2: Dark Pulse
move 3: Tailwind / Earth Power
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Levitate
nature: Timid / Modest
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Please make the appropriate corrections in the rest of the analysis to reflect these changes.

Other stuff:
  • In the first bullet of the Overview remove "unless resists" cause it's fluff
  • Change the fourth bullet in the Overview to something like "Despite its solid set of resistances and good coverage, it is incredibly susceptible to Fairy-types, which is especially unfortunate with the introduction of the Tapus"
  • Add a bullet in the Overview summing up the main reasons to use Hydreigon (i.e. the combination of a unique defensive typing, access to Twind, and high SpA)
  • You really need to beef up the Usage Tips section, if you need ideas go check out the Doubles C&C Guide
  • Add a bullet in Moves mentioning Draco Meteor's nasty side effect of dropping Hydreigon's SpA
  • Add a bullet in Team Options for attackers that struggle versus Steel-types, such as Mega Metagross and Sylveon
  • Move Dragonium Z to OO and also add Darkinium Z, which allows Hydreigon to pick up reliable OHKOs on the likes of Aegislash and Jirachi
This is kind of a lot, so implement these changes then tag me so I can go over it another time :toast:

super late, but I finally made all the changes. sorry about that man :(

  • [OVERVIEW] Move the last bullet so it's the first
  • [OVERVIEW] "Hydreigon's unique typing combined with its power and access to Tailwind"..... does what?
  • [OVERVIEW] In general, make sure to beef up the overview in your write up, it's a little lacking as is
  • [MOVES] The first bullet should be split into two, mentioning the uses of Draco Meteor and Dark Pulse separatly
  • [MOVES] Remove the mention of Jirachi in the first bullet
  • [MOVES] The second bullet's wording is more akin to Usage Tips. Just state that it cuts Hydreigon's Special Attack instead of saying "so keep that in mind..."
  • [SET DETAILS] Add a bullet for the EV spread
  • [USAGE TIPS] Your first bullet seems to contradict the rest of the section, where you say Hydreigon is used to punch holes in teams. Hydreigon works best early to mid game, so edit the section as appropriate.
  • [USAGE TIPS] Since Dragonium Z is now in OO, remove all mentions/bullets relating to it here.
  • [USAGE TIPS] You need to mention that Hydreigon will likely be forced out after using a Draco Meteor, since the SpA drop makes it super weak.
  • [TEAM OPTIONS] Steel-types such as Aegislash and Heatran also benefit from Hydreigon's defensive synergy with them, so note that
  • [OTHER OPTIONS] Elaborate on all these moves/sets/items in your write up
  • [CHECKS AND COUNTERS] Add a **Misty Terrain** tag, since it weakens Hydreigon's primary STAB
1/2, go ahead and write this up :toast:

  • [Set] Remove Modest, you should always use Timid for Lele/non-Scarf Lando-T/Kyu-B
  • [Set Details/Usage Tips] Take out mentions of Dragonium Z, Life Orb is pretty crucial imo
  • [Set Details] Take out Modest mention to reflect set change
  • [Other Options] Make Fire Blast first sentence, it's the best thing in OO
  • [Other Options] Remove Choice Specs, if you want more power running a Z-Crystal is better to retain the ability to switch moves and use Protect
Good stuff, QC 2/2 and send this off to GP
