Golbat (ADV NU Analysis)

Disaster Area

formerly Piexplode
[Overview]
- Its double Fighting resistance automatically grants it some sort of a niche. It is immune to Ground, which is also very helpful, although it's weak to Rock. Similar Pokemon that can do similar things include Chimecho, Arbok, and Swalot. Golbat's quirky typing, exceptional Base 90 speed, and a couple of peculiar but useful moves such as Curse and Whirlwind ultimately let it be a little bit of a wildcard, as a suprising and rare sight.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move 1: Sludge Bomb
move 2: Shadow Ball
move 3: Hidden Power Ground
move 4: Aerial Ace / Whirlwind / SLeep Talk
item: Choice Band
nature: Jolly / Adamant
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- Sludge Bomb is your primary STAB, and is reasonably effective when coming off of Choice Band Base 80 Attack, although by no means game-breaking, as so much resists it.
- Shadow Ball and Hidden Power Ground give somewhat complementary coverage, meaning that no Pokemon other than Sableye can come in absolutely for free.
- Aerial Ace is an option for a secondary STAB, but is quite weak. It's the most effective move versus Bug types, however they're somewhat rare. Whirlwind is a very interesting move. Although it's Choice-locked, it allows you to scout the opponents team, and see how strong their initial switch is versus Golbat. Combine it with Spikes support and it can begin to wear down its checks and such.
- Sleep Talk is a consideration since it's also a solid check to Sunnybeamers, with its handy 4x resistance to grass, as well as a decent Venomoth switch-in (Psychic notwithstanding), so it has plenty of opportunities to absorb sleep if your team requires it.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- Jolly allows it to tie with notably Vigoroth and Venomoth, as well as outspeed base 80s (Glalie and Arbok mainly) and Seadra, whilst Adamant can be run for extra power, letting it still outspeed Hitmonchan and anything slower.
- Quick Attack could be used for EndRev/Flailers, but is an awful choice of a move to be Choice-locked into.
- Spikes support is near-mandatory if you're running Whirlwind.

[Other Options]
- A Curse set sounds viable on paper, but it has issue fitting it alongside good enough coverage, as well as appropriate utility moves. It also is a little bit of a waste of its good Speed.
- Taunt is probably an excellent move if not abusing a Choice Band, but its utility is not particularly worth the loss in power. Haze is similar.

[Checks and Counters]
- Ghosts such as Sableye and Haunter handle it very nicely. Haunter only fears Shadow Ball (and it mayb be EV'd to survive it, primarily in preparation for Hitmonchan), whilst Sableye can stall it with Recover, and Haunter can hit it with Psychic or the rare Will-o-Wisp.
- Ground and Rock types both resist Golbat's Poison STAB, and the Ground types typically fear nothing, making in particular Whiscash and Piloswine great answers, but also Graveler, Sudowoodo, and Relicanth. Golbat's base 65 Special makes Giga Drain not particularly scary.
- Steel types, namely Mawile and Metang, are immune to its Poison STAB, and take fairly low damage from HP Ground.
- Chimecho, although it don't resist Sludge Bomb, and is weak to Shadow Ball, can hurt it and force it out early-game.
- Poison types of your own can resist Golbat's STAB Sludge Bomb and return with an appropriate attack.
