[Gen7] Victim of the Week CAP S/M (Week 12: Life Orb Syclant)

OU Standard Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip

I know, I know. Call me innovative. Sure this isn't the most unique counter to Syclant, but it is easily the most effective counters. You either force Syclant to switch out and lose momentum, switch out via U-Turn and take Iron Barbs damage, or take a hit and then OHKO in return with Gyro Ball. I don't even feel like I need to explain the usefulness of Ferrothorn outside of this, but it beats many common Fairies, MegaGross lacking Hammer Arm, common Water types, and more. It can also beat Tapu Fini, who is currently one of the most common defoggers who'd want to remove Ferro's Spikes.

0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (137 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Syclant: 374-444 (133 - 158%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 133-157 (37.7 - 44.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Air Slash
- Flamethrower

This is a Counter.

Specially Defensive Celesteela is probably one of the better SpD tanks in the meta right now, standing out from Mollux and Blissey for its great Defensive Typing (Only weak to Fire and Electric, while boasting 8 resistances and 2 immunes) and its lack of large recovery move. Overall, Celesteela covers so many options in terms of special sponging because of its typing, that there generally aren't that many special attackers that easily take it on. Specially offensive Tomohawk, a very annoying surprise, is also completely shut down by this set, and the standard defensive Tomohawk is also taken care of by the use of Air Slash to hit the weaker SpD with a super effective move. This can also handle mons like Kerfluffle and pretty much any special attacker that isn't carrying a strong super effective move.

As for specifically Syclant, Celesteela easily comes in on it, taking a max of roughly 40%. It can then Protect for Leftovers healing or just straight up ohko with Flamethrower after Syclant's next Ice Beam. There's also the option of Leech Seed stalling, since Life Orb recoil will speed the process up, but Flamethrower is generally quicker.

252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 125-148 (31.4 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 31-36 (7.7 - 9%) -- possibly the worst move ever
4 Atk Life Orb Syclant U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Celesteela: 27-32 (6.7 - 8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
-
0 SpA Celesteela Air Slash vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Syclant: 276-326 (98.2 - 116%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Celesteela Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Syclant: 440-520 (156.5 - 185%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Other Interesting Things:

0 SpA Celesteela Air Slash vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tomohawk: 204-242 (49.2 - 58.4%) -- 98.4% chance to 2HKO
-
252 SpA Life Orb Kerfluffle Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Celesteela: 168-199 (42.2 - 50%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Celesteela Air Slash vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Kerfluffle: 192-228 (62.1 - 73.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Arghonaut as a counter

Arghonaut @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 200 HP / 220 Atk / 88 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Drain Punch
- Gunk Shot
- Recover

252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Earth Power vs. 200 HP / 88 SpD Arghonaut: 107-126 (26.6 - 31.4%) -- 20.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
220+ Atk Arghonaut Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Syclant: 157-186 (55.8 - 66.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Volcarona @ Firium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Check

Volcarona can take any two hits from Syclant and use it as setup bait. Flame Body discourages Syclant from clicking U-turn. It's SR weak and can't switch in repeatedly like some of these other mons, so it's definitely more of a check, but a solid one nonetheless.

Did I mention it KOes Syclant ten times over?

252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Volcarona: 112-133 (36 - 42.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Inferno Overdrive (185 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Syclant: 2988-3516 (1063.3 - 1251.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Mega Metagross as a Check

Metagross @ Metagrossite
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Ability: Clear Body
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake / Hammer Arm
- Zen Headbutt
- Thunder Punch / Bullet Punch

Standard AoA Megagross set. This version of Syclant cant OHKO it at all, and Metagross shreds it apart. Can also easily revengekill with Bullet Punch if the need arises.

252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Metagross-Mega: 216-255 (71.7 - 84.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Tough Claws Metagross-Mega Meteor Mash vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Syclant: 558-656 (198.5 - 233.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Tough Claws Metagross-Mega Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Syclant: 248-294 (88.2 - 104.6%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

I dont think I need to say why Megagross is good, do I?

Mega Gallade as a check

Gallade @ Galladite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Zen Headbutt
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance

252 SpA Life Orb Syclant Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gallade-Mega: 153-183 (55 - 65.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Gallade-Mega Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Syclant: 313-370 (111.3 - 131.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Mega Gallade is a rather unexplored mon in the meta, but I believe it holds a niche as a Swords Dance sweeper with relatively good STABs, and access to Knock Off lets it beat Mew, which Mega Medicham can't do.
