As we all impatiently wait for Gen7 PU to finally arrive, why not pass the time by visiting the unexplored metagame that is Gen4 PU?

During the month of October 2016, the Ruins of Alph held a special ladder for Gen4 NU. From this ladder, it is possible to obtain usage stats and base a PU tier from that. Tournament Rules:
  • All matches will be best of three, played in Gen4 UU specifically.
  • Single Elimination.
  • All pairings will be assigned at random.
  • Replays are REQUIRED. Any matches that are not recorded and posted will be treated as if they did not happen. This is required to help with the cultivation of the metagame and record-keeping.
  • If your opponent uses an illegal mon, then your opponent forfeited that particular game by doing so. Since the mons list is available in 2 different formats, there is a list of Illegal NFEs in the resource post, and there are sample teams provided, there is no adequate excuse for using an illegal mon.
  • Extensions will be provided, but only if there is a stated time in the request. These requests for extensions cannot extend past 1 week however. Activity wins will also be given upon request and investigation, however if both players showed equal effort in scheduling (or lack thereof) then the match will be decided via virtual coinflip.
  • Remember to have fun!
  • For more specific rules regarding ghosting, scheduling, etc., or if you simply need more detail, click here.

Battle Clauses:
  • Baton Pass Clause. A team cannot have more than one Pokemon with the move Baton Pass. The Pokemon that does have Baton Pass cannot pass a combination of Speed + another stat.
  • Sleep Clause. A player cannot put two or more different opposing Pokémon to sleep using attacks that induce sleep to opposing Pokémon.
  • Evasion Clause. A player cannot increase their pokémon's evasion stat with a move that specifically increases evasion. Items or indirect boosts do not break this clause.
  • OHKO Clause. Players cannot use moves that have a chance of instantly KO opposing Pokémon. For example, Horn Drill is an illegal move to have on a Pokémon's move set.
  • Species Clause. You cannot use the same Pokemon twice on the same team. For example, you cannot use two Rhydon.

Resources can be found in the post below!

Here we have a fairly easy to use balance team utilizing the legendary gastrodon. The team functions by weakening bulky grass/steel types and offensive dark types so that in the end, scarf modest kadabra can come in and sweep. First, lead taunt misdreavus was chosen to prevent entry hazards as that’s a big problem to deal with while playing balance or a similarly slow playstyle. From here the team was built in such a way that mixed bulk gastrodon can check a good portion of the tier including LO Kadabra, Rhydon, Rapidash, Sneasel, Poliwrath, and Metang as well as a lot of other huge threats. Probopass and Golbat work to mitigate gastrodon’s grass weakness as both of them can check Victribell, Cacturne, and Bellosum with Probo also checking ghosts. Monferno serves as a breaker to add pressure onto steel types, cacturne, and bulky waters. Lastly, Kadabra is used as a scarfer/late game sweeper with a moveset that allows it to hit any mon in the tier at least neutrally while giving it the ability to trick walls if your opp is running a slower playstyle.

This team consists of wearing down the opponent with entry hazards and strong wallbreakers and finishing with a Rhydon or Misdreavus sweep. Machoke is chosen as the lead as it is one of the best antileads in the tier with plenty of bulk, priority, and a strong Dynamicpunch to pressure the opponent from Turn 1. Rhydon is added for Stealth Rock and as a wallbreaker with Rock Polish as an alternate wincon, and with Shuca Berry as the item letting Rhydon beat other Rhydon 1v1 with the added bonus of having more opportunities to set up. Poliwrath is added as strong glue for the team, taking Water, Rock, and Fire hits for the rest of the team while providing plenty of power and priority on its own. Cacturne stacks Spikes and is one of the strongest wallbreakers in the tier with even more priority. Golbat is then added as glue to work as a Victreebel and Poliwrath switchin while also providing support through Super Fang and U-turn. The last mon chosen is Misdreavus as the revenge killer, spinblocker, and alternative wincon, as it provides plenty of defensive synergy with great speed and support and the optional Trick to hinder any switchins Misdreavus might have. Overall a good team with plenty of offensive pressure and defensive synergy that made it all the way to the finals.

Standard sun. Onix is chosen as the lead to set up Stealth Rock, Sunny Day, and explode out of the way while occasionally taunting opposing leads. Purugly is the backup Sunny Day setter as it has the speed to almost always get the sun out, while also providing a U-turn option and a Sucker Punch option for scarfers. The offensive core for the team is Victreebel and Rapidash, who together can wallbreak and sweep most of the tier alone with the sun up. Tangela is used as the backup Chlorophyll sweeper with enough speed EVed to outspeed Sneasel and +2 Jolly Rhydon in sun with the rest into bulk. Metang is chosen as the last mon as glue, as it reliably switches in on Muk and can beat common threats to Sun such as Probopass, Specially Defensive Flareon (with the shown EVs), or the stated Muk. Very straightforward team overall, but it is possible to customize by doing things such as adding Sleep Powder to Tangela, adding Stone Edge over Taunt on Onix, replacing Metang with a Kadabra for a more offensive wallbreaker and answer to Muk, or running Solarbeam on Rapidash for a lure.

This team is balance more or less built around CroMuk. Purugly is a lead that provides speed control via Sucker Punch and Fake Out as well as providing momentum with Uturn. Silk Scarf, while weaker than Life Orb, preserves Purugly's health longer throughout the match ensure it can still revenge kill late game. Muk is the special wall and wincon that can comfortably switch in on common threats such as Poliwrath, Victreebel, and Bellossom. Defensive Resttalk Poliwrath is the dedicated switchin for a plethora of mons that force Muk out such as Rhydon, Metang, Armaldo, and Gabite. Psychic is used to hit opposing Poliwrath, Golbat, and Victreebel on the switch for solid damage. 88 speed creeps max speed jolly Rhydon. Spdef Salbeye is the dedicated stop to Psychic threats like Kadabra and Mr. Mime that threaten Muk. The combination of taunt and Seismic Toss also allows Sableye to check bulkier mons that want to spam recovery such as opposing Muk, Quagsire, Kecleon, and, Flareon. 8 Speed for creeping other base 50s like Muk and and Metang. Armaldo provides great role compression as a Normal check, rock setter, and hazard remover. Earthquake ensures you can switch in and threaten Muk. Double Dance Rhydon serves as yet another normal check as well as the teams wallbreaker/setup sweeper.

This is a bulky offense team with so much defensive synergy that it almost plays like stall. Poliwrath is chosen as the lead as it has a lot of good matchups in the lead metagame, such as against Monferno and Purugly, and has enough bulk to be useful throughout the match as an Edgequake, Fire, Water, and Steel answer. Sableye is the Psychic/Normal and backup Rhydon check that can taunt other, slower walls to stall those out. Muk is the blanket specially-defensive tank of the team primarily there for taking Grass and the common Ghost attackers. Mr. Mime is the revenge killer of the team, which boasts a Choice Scarf to outspeed the tier and also has the option of Healing Wish to heal a teammate. Lickilicky is the second blanket special wall that can pass Wish to teammates, and has Power Whip to lure in Rhydon and Misdreavus. Rhydon is the last member, and is the wallbreaker of the team that also provides the all-important Stealth Rock.

All mons are ranked in order of viability, not alphabetical! However, all mons in a rank are considered to be “largely similar”. NOTE: MODERN BATON PASS CLAUSE IS IN EFFECT. DRIFBLIM, ROSELIA, AND LINOONE ARE ALL BANNED.

Nasty Plot: Chatot / Misdreavus / Mr. Mime / Raichu / Togetic
Other Sweepers: Muk / Munchlax / Poliwrath / Yanma

Broken Mons:
Rhydon: Rhydon

  • You lead with the mon that's in the first slot of the teambuilder. There is no team preview, so you cannot pick your lead beyond placing a mon in the first slot of the teambuilder beforehand.
  • Defog does not get rid of hazards.
  • Magic Coat does not block hazards.
  • Critical hits double damage this gen, instead of the 1.5x current multiplier.
  • Focus Sash cannot be broken with just multi-hit moves. If you use Bonemerang for example and hit a mon from 100% to sash with the first hit, the second hit will do 0 damage.
  • Sturdy is not a free Focus Sash. It only blocks moves like Fissure. That is why my Sun Sample has an Onix with Focus Sash.
  • No hidden abilities. So no, Golduck does not get Swift Swim.
  • Taunt works for 2-4 turns. Encore works for 3-7 turns. SEVEN.
  • Sound moves do not go through Substitute, but they are still blocked by Soundproof.
  • Steel resists Dark and Ghost.
  • Fairy does not exist.
  • Giga Drain is only base 60 power. Use Energy Ball if you can.
  • Grass types are not immune to "spore moves", so your Victreebel can be put to sleep by Sleep Powder.
  • Will-O-Wisp has 75 accuracy, instead of the current 85.
