Pokémon teams rely on offensive and defensive synergy to function. Despite this, cores of certain Pokémon may hold a distinct advantage over some teams, because of the nature of Pokémon teams and the multitude of threats that have to be covered. The premise of this thread is to analyze popular teams and derive cores of viable Pokémon which excel when matching up to the team. Hopefully this exercise helps you with your teambuilding process and analysis of Pokémon teams!

Procedure

  • I will post an Ubers team comprised of 6 Pokémon.
  • For 3-4 days after that post, posters will have the chance to reserve and post a core, consisting of 2 or 3 viable Pokémon, which threaten the aforementioned team.
  • When the week is up, there will be a voting period of 1-2 days in which you decide ,which core "Breaks This Team", most effectively.
  • On a side note, please don’t be insulted if your nomination doesn’t make the OP. There will be many other opportunities. Also, a hall of fame will be created to reward users who consistently contribute good nominations.

Other Rules

  • Please follow up your reservations in a timely fashion, ideally within 24 hours. If you don't finish your reservation in a timely manner, I will allow someone else to take the Pokémon you reserved. Please do not make a habit out of not following up on your reservation
  • Please post only Pokémon that are viable in Ubers. This means they should be listed on the viability rankings thread. NOTE: With this rule, I will more than exercise leniency rather than enforcing it strictly. I don't want to discourage contributions, so if someone would like to mention a Pokemon that's threatening to the core and unlisted in the Viability Rankings, that's fine as long as they provide a genuine explanation behind their choice. Of course, the majority of threats and partners posted here should still be ones viable in Ubers and listed on the Viability Rankings. However, there's no harm in having some unranked Pokemon posted every now (As long as its not Sigilyph :D).
  • When posting a core, please explain yourself. Calculations aren't necessary, but please have a coherent thought process or reasoning as to why you chose the core you did. Please also make sure to include a moveset and EV spread.
  • Please be respectful to others!

For the first round, the team chosen is Lance's stall from ORAS Ubers that was then updated to better handle the SM Metagame. This team has been used quite frequently in seasonal with success. Before posting, make sure you understand the rules and thread as a whole and gl :)

Groudon @ Red Orb
Ability: Drought
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Precipice Blades
- Roar
- Toxic

Kyurem-White @ Choice Specs
Ability: Turboblaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Draco Meteor
- Fusion Flare
- Earth Power

Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hex
- Focus Blast/Sludge Bomb
- Taunt

This core utilizes Kyurem-W's and Gengar's wall-breaking capabilities with additional support from Groudon. Groudon's Stealth Rock + Toxic are great tools to bait in its switch-ins (Arceus-Ground, Giratina, and Lugia) to potentially poison them. Moreover, Kyurem-W's sheer power effectively 2HKO's everything on the team with an appropriate move, while Gengar traps and eliminates Clefable, Tentacruel, or anything in range of a KO. Finally, since Arceus-Ground can deal good damage to this core, a mon with Ground immunity is mandatory to limit damage from it as much as possible.

Xerneas @ Fairium Z
Ability: Fairy Aura
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

- Rest
- Ingrain

Strategy is to ingrain on Clefable / Lugia / Giratina / Tentacruel, proceed to Z-Geomancy and win.

Edit: beats SM version as well

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
EVs: 160 HP / 252 SpA / 96 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Thunder

Yveltal @ Choice Specs
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Oblivion Wing
- Dark Pulse
- U-turn
- Hurricane

Gengar-Mega @ Gengarite
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Destiny Bond
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb

Taunt + D-Bond Mega Gengar, CM 3 Attacks Primal Kyogre and Specs Yveltal just take a massive dump on this team. Having U-Turn on Yveltal brings Mega Gengar in very safely so it can trap and remove Clefable, which will allow Yveltal to spam Specs-boosted Dark Pulse later on in the match. Mega Gengar can also trap and remove Lugia for Primal Kyogre so it can not have to worry about troublesome phasers and Toxic-stallers besides Giratina, which is 2HKOd by Ice Beam after Stealth Rock and is also handled by Yveltal. Lastly, Mega Gengar can remove Toxic Spikes if need be, and even then, Yveltal's immune to them. Primal Kyogre's Origin Pulse, Ice Beam and Thunder hit just about everything on this team for heavy amounts of damage, and will be even tougher to deal with when CM boosts come in to play. Origin Pulse even 2HKOs SpDef Clefable, making its Unaware ability useless against this CM set. Kyogre's also running enough speed to outpace Tentacruel so it can avoid unnecessary damage.

Thanks to this team's lack of flying resists, Oblivion Wing from Yveltal is highly spammable and will constantly be healing itself throughout the match vs a team with a plethora of HP. You'll mainly be using the first three moves with the last slot being filler, but I threw in Hurricane since it's able to 2HKO SpDef Clefable despite it being a tad bit unnecessary thanks to U-Turn bringing in Mega Gengar.

Tagging Ed, Gunner Rohan, and Vengeance417 to inform you that I posted the ORAS Version of this team accidentally instead of the SM. Seeing how its only Sunday and the deadline is Tuesday, it shouldnt be a problem to update your core accordingly. If you don't want to, that is fine and you can keep your post for likes I suppose. Sorry about the mistake the first round and ill make sure nothing of this nature happens again :)

Gyarados @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature / Jolly Nature
- Crunch
- Taunt / Substitute
- Aqua Tail / Waterfall
- Dragon Dance

sub/taunt DD mega gyarados by itself has a ridiculously strong match up against this stall team. in essence, normal gyara can DD with ease on the likes of arceus-ground [which is not hard to lure in with groudon primal and such] and then at +1 mega gyara has a free ticket to dragon dance and then nosh on everything.

notes:

- sub allows you to beat giratina 100% of the time, but you get whirlwinded out by lugia unless you have rocks up
- aqua tail has chance to miss but gives you the power needed against phys. def ho-oh to secure the OHKO without risking burn or toxic
- jolly lets you outspeed & taunt lugia, giving you another mon to set up on if you get whirlwinded out b/c all it can do is ice beam, but ada gives you the stronk hits

relevant calcs i suppose:

+1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 252 HP / 160+ Def Lugia: 314-372 (75.4 - 89.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Aqua Tail vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ho-Oh: 426-504 (102.6 - 121.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 312-368 (61.9 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Aqua Tail vs. 212 HP / 80 Def Clefable: 322-379 (83.8 - 98.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tentacruel: 348-411 (95.6 - 112.9%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Congratulations to March Fires to winning this first week of Break This Team (Ubers Edition) and OP was updated accordingly

For round two, Hack was nice enough to pass an import of his Week 1 SPL Team. As he said, the team was meant to be solid vs all archetype of Uber Teams and served as a nice, non matchup reliant way to start off SPL. Same procedures as last time, and have fun!

Posting period will be finished sometime around Wednesday 11:59 PM EST

Have fun :]

Ho-Oh @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 160 Atk / 100 Spe
Adamant/Careful Nature
- Brave Bird
- Recover
- Substitute
- Toxic

Groudon @ Red Orb
Ability: Drought
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Precipice Blades
- Toxic
- Roar

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Leech Seed
- Heavy Slam
- Toxic
- Protect

Due to the bulky nature of this team and its ability to reliably check the tier's common offensive threats and stall breakers, bulky status spam is probably the most reliable way to break it. First, I went with the Celesteela + Groudon core because they have good synergy, tank hits and spread status. Then I added Ho-Oh to provide additional tanking prowess to the core, while Sub + Toxic gives it an easier time to pressure the team's tanks with status and attacking. While attempting to break the team with status, your opponent will try to do the same, so you have to play accordingly, or run a cleric like Blissey.

Ok no one post. This is a core was for a fun team BO.

Lucario-Mega @ Lucarionite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Iron Tail
- Bullet Punch
- Swords Dance

Landorus-Therian @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Fly
- Stealth Rock
- Swords Dance

Ho-Oh @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 SpD
Impish Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Brave Bird
- Roost
- Toxic

- Jolly nature is chosen on Landorus-Therian to outspeed Xerneas and Arceus-Water, anyways Adamant can work too.

- A trapper like ttar Band or Muk-A AV should be add in this core to provides a Ghost- Psychic-Type check.

- I build around this core for fun, so have fun. >:0

Mega-Lucario SD can beat this balance by itself once get +2 on Muk-A.

Landorus-Therian puts Stealth Rocks to get in OHKO range to help Luke avoiding rolls. Fly-Z on +2 is efective against his defog user. Able to do SR or SD on Pdon, Muk-A, Xerneas locked or Arceus-Water, this just run Fire Blast.

Ho-Oh provides Toxic to weak more that balance along with Hazard especially against Arceus-Water and Lugia, also works like a pivot taking attacks of Mega-Gengar and Xerneas specs, this last can hit with Thunder, however if Xerneas is locked on that move means Landorus get a free SR or SD.

Show Mega-Lucario's cals isn't necessary, so some cals with Fly-Z Landorus-T

+2 252 Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 168+ Def Arceus-Water: 418-493 (94.1 - 111%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252 Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Lugia: 372-438 (89.4 - 105.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

+2 252 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Xerneas: 367-433 (93.3 - 110.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Lucario is the best thing against this team, but it can only set up against one pokemon, the Alolan Muk. Cue the specs Lunala partner to try and lure in Muk as the only mon that can take 2 hits from Lunala so that Lucario can set up against it after rocks have been set. This principle also works with ZHypno Lunala if you prefer using it over Specs Lunala, but this was a core on a sticky webs team I used the other day, so I just kept it as it was.
