[Balanced Hackmons] Mewtwo-Mega-Y [QC: 1/3][GP: 0/2]

morogrim

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[OVERVIEW]

. Strongest special attacker in the metagame, also has one of the highest base Speeds to go with it
. Capable of wallbreaking or sweeping depending on the set thanks to its fantastic offensive stats
. Its weaker Defense holds it back, easy to revenge kill
. Poor offensive typing, STAB moves not that useful, also poor defensive typing. Weak to common utility and pivot moves such as Knock Off and U-turn
. Very hard to Imposter-proof, almost always needs Imposter-proofing support from the team
. Suffers from 4MSS, can beat almost anything but needs correct moveset
. Outspeeds almost all relevant threats in the metagame, doesn't really need a Choice Scarf

[SET]
name: SF Wallbreaker
move 1: Moonblast
move 2: Searing Shot / Earth Power
move 3: Sludge Wave / Focus Blast / Diamond Storm
move 4: King's Shield / Seed Flare / Volt Switch
item: Life Orb
ability: Sheer Force
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

. Moonblast hits the Dark-, Dragon-, and Fighting-type Pokemon such as Yveltal, Mega Tyranitar, Mega Gyarados, Giratina, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Mewtwo X for super effective damage, OHKOes all of the aforementioned bar Giratina which is 2HKOed
. Searing Shot and Earth Power hit Steel-type walls such as Registeel and Aegislash super effectively and 2HKOes them, Searing Shot can be replaced with Blue Flare at the cost of losing a bit of accuracy but gaining power and being able to OHKO Mega Gengar (despite not having Earth Power) and also any non-Flash Fire Steel-type wall
. Sludge Wave 2HKOes Fairy-type walls such as Mega Audino and Xerneas, Focus Blast can 2HKO Fur Coat Chansey, Diamond Storm OHKOes Ho-Oh
. King's Shield allows Mega Mewtwo Y to potentially defeat -Ate users by weakening their physical priority moves such as Extreme Speed, Volt Switch is to gain momentum for the team at the cost of Life Orb recoil (can be replaced with Baton Pass for no recoil but no damage either), and Seed Flare OHKOes Water-types, mainly Kyogre (also OHKOes the uncommon Groudon). Seed Flare may be replaced with Energy Ball for more accuracy in exchange for missing out on the OHKO on Kyogre
. Ice Beam can be used on the fourth moveslot to 2HKO uncommon walls such as Lugia and Flash Fire Mega Venusaur if they are a concern, Thunderbolt could also be used to 2HKO Lugia, Kyogre, and Ho-Oh

Set Details
========

. Life Orb is chosen for the great synergy it has with Sheer Force as moves with secondary effects do not trigger Life Orb's recoil damage, along with Sheer Force Mega Mewtwo Y gets a x1.69 multiplier for all of its moves
. A Timid nature along with 252 Speed EVs are chosen to be able to outspeed all Pokemon below base 140 Speed such as Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Gengar and to Speed tie with other Mega Mewtwo Y
. The rest of the EVs are invested into Special Attack for maximum damage output

Usage Tips
========

. Mega Mewtwo Y can break any wall in the metagame with the correct move and should be used in the early and mid game to punch holes into the opponent's team to make it easier to sweep in the late game
. Do not be too concerned with predicting switches, Mega Mewtwo Y's moves usually still hit pretty hard even when resisted and can often finish off the foe on the following turn anyway, not revealing the coverage move immediately also serves as a surprise factor which can result in some free KOs
. Try to pick Mega Mewtwo Y's moves in a way that best suits your team's needs: if your team has no way of breaking a specific wall, use the corresponding coverage move on Mega Mewtwo Y to break that wall
. Try to bring Mega Mewtwo Y in safely on a slow pivot to keep it as healthy as possible, this also has the benefit of making the opponent think you have Focus Sash and would make them think twice before trying to revenge kill Mega Mewtwo Y at full health. It is for this reason that having Volt Switch is the least preferred option for the final moveslot as using this move will reveal Life Orb to the opponent
. Use King's Shield to weaken physical priority moves from revenge killers such as Mega Rayquaza and Mega Diancie and proceed to OHKO them with the appropriate coverage moves
. It is very important to keep Mega Mewtwo Y above 60% HP as -Ate boosted Extreme Speeds can finish off Mega Mewtwo Y even if they are weakened by King's Shield at that range

Team Options
========

. Steel-type walls such as Registeel and Aegislash pair well with Mega Mewtwo Y as they can take the -Ate boosted priority moves which would otherwise be able to pick off Mega Mewtwo Y
. Mega Mewtwo Y requires Imposter-proofing support which is also dependent on the chosen set. Flash Fire Registeel can be used if Focus Blast and Earth Power are not chosen for example.
. Physical sweepers such as Mega Tyranitar and Mega Gyarados can clean up after Mega Mewtwo Y has weakened the walls
. Mega Mewtwo Y appreciates Mold Breaker support from users such as Mega Tyranitar, Giratina, and Mega Gengar as it cannot defeat Shedinja by itself, physical Mold Breakers also help deal with Fur Coat Chansey if Focus Blast is not carried
. Hazard removal is also greatly appreciated since hazards limit the amount of times that Mega Mewtwo Y can come into the field

[SET]
name: 'Murican Sniper
move 1: Focus Energy
move 2: Psycho Boost
move 3: Moonblast
move 4: Magma Storm / Earth Power / King's Shield
item: Scope Lens
ability: Sniper
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

. Focus Energy raises Mega Mewtwo Y's critical hit rating by 2 stages, enabling it to critically hit 100% of the time with the help of Scope Lens
. Psycho Boost is the main STAB move of Mega Mewtwo Y which will ignore all of Mega Mewtwo Y's negative stat changes while also ignoring all of the opponent's positive stat changes thanks to the 100% critical hit rating obtained from using Focus Energy
. Moonblast hits the Dark-types that are immune to Psycho Boost, such as Mega Tyranitar and Yveltal
. Magma Storm is used for coverage to hit the Steel-types that would otherwise wall Mega Mewtwo Y and also defeats Shedinja, can be replaced with Earth Power if dealing with Flash Fire users is a concern (at the expense of not being able to defeat Shedinja). King's Shield can also be used to be able to defeat -Ate users

Set Details
========

. Scope Lens allows Mega Mewtwo Y to reach the third stage of critical hit rating after using Focus Energy which means that all of its moves will be critical hits
. Sniper enables Mega Mewtwo Y to hit for an extra x1.5 for critical strikes, effectively giving it a +1 boost for all attacks after reaching the third critical hit rating stage
. A Timid nature along with 252 Speed EVs are chosen to outspeed all Pokemon below base 140 Speed such as Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Gengar and to Speed tie with other Mega Mewtwo Y
. The rest of the EVs are invested into Special Attack for maximum damage output

Usage Tips
========

. Mega Mewtwo Y should be used in the late game to sweep the opponent team, it could be used earlier however to quickly nuke a threat with a strong Psycho Boost however
. It is crucial for Mega Mewtwo Y not to lose its Scope Lens; for this reason it is a good idea to completely scout for Knock Off users in the opponent team before bringing Mega Mewtwo Y preferably on a slow pivot

========

. Wallbreakers such as Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo X, and Mega Garchomp can help weaken the opponent walls and allow Mega Mewtwo Y to sweep
. Mega Mewtwo Y needs Mold Breaker support to be able to deal with Shedinja (if Magma Storm is not being used) and greatly appreciates support from the likes of Giratina, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Gengar
. Steel-type walls such as Registeel and Aegislash pair well with Mega Mewtwo Y as they can take the -Ate boosted priority moves which would otherwise be able to pick off Mega Mewtwo Y
. Hazard removal is also greatly appreciated since hazards limit the amount of times that Mega Mewtwo Y can come into the field
. Mega Mewtwo Y is Imposter-resistant as Imposters will only have a 50% critical hit chance since they do not carry Scope Lens (bar Lucky Punch Imposter Chansey which is uncommon). It is however still a good idea to include a teammate to completely Imposter-proof Mega Mewtwo Y as 50% critical hit chance is still a pretty good value. Steel-type Walls such as Flash Fire or Levitate Registeel or Aegislash are able to completely wall Imposters and prevent the team from being potentially counter-swept

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

. A pivoting move such as Baton Pass or Parting Shot may be used on the Sheer Force set so that Life Orb is not revealed but at the expense of not dealing damage
. Freeze Dry is another option for the Sheer Force set which hits both Water-types such as Kyogre and Flying-types such as Lugia that can be used
. Moves such as Infestation or Leech Seed may be used for the fourth moveslot for either set to be able to defeat Shedinja but at the cost of losing potentially important coverage or being able to defeat -Ate users or pivoting
. No Guard is another viable ability that can be run on Mega Mewtwo Y, a spread of 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe with a Timid nature is recommended along with a moveset consisting of Sing, Inferno, Zap Cannon, and either Focus Blast or Dynamic Punch.
. Sets such as Contrary and Tinted Lens can be run to fulfill the wallbreaking role of the Sheer Force set, however both sets do use STAB moves as the main damaging move which is not ideal since Psychic typing is not too good of an offensive type

Checks and Counters
===================

**-Ate Users**: Mega Rayquaza and Mega Diancie can threaten Mega Mewtwo Y with their -Ate boosted priority moves and force it out

**Super Effective Priority Moves**: such as Sucker Punch and Shadow Sneak coming from strong physical attackers such as Mega Tyranitar and Mega Mewtwo X can revenge kill Mega Mewtwo Y as it has a low Defense stat

**Gale Wings Users**: such as Mega Rayquaza can revenge kill Mega Mewtwo Y with moves such as Dragon Ascent and Oblivion Wing

**Priority Sleep**: Prankster users such as Registeel and Mega Rayquaza can put Mega Mewtwo Y to sleep with moves such as Spore and Dark Void and then either phaze it or set up on it

**Faster Threats**: such as Mega Aerodactyl and Deoxys-A can outspeed Mega Mewtwo Y and threaten it

**Specially Defensive Walls**: such as Fur Coat Chansey, Kyogre, and Ho-Oh can wall Mega Mewtwo Y depending on its coverage moves but are at risk if Mega Mewtwo Y is carrying the appropriate coverage move

**Shedinja**: Shedinja does wall Mega Mewtwo Y but having Shedinja on a team requires a lot of team support and also it will no longer be able to switch into Mega Mewtwo Y if hazards are on the field or if Mega Mewtwo Y pivots or doubles into a Mold Breaker user on the Shedinja switch

A few notes for QC:
1. I'm not sure if I should even include the Sniper set as its not really that good imo. What do you think?

A contrary set with leaf storm, overheat, psychoboost and substitute is an option, taking advantage of MMY's super high special attack stat. Use sub on a predicted switch then fire off whatever move hits it hardest to deal huge damage. You can replace leaf storm with v-create to outspeed the metagame at +1 also.

Was considering contrary, but tbh it's outclassed by mega ray since he's a better contrary user in general (great mixed stats etc)

Blue flare>searing shot, 95% of the time. Don't list searing shot except maybe in OO.
Steam Eruption is basically inferior to psystrike- the latter takes on Ho-Oh, Chansey, Kyogre, FF Venasaur, and is highly spammable, while steam eruption hits Ho-Oh and... TTar, which is also hit by moonblast/EP/FB, and, well, Groudon, I guess. Sure the lack of LO recoil is nice, but it ain't enough.
Volt switch should come before Seed Flare, if seed flare even gets listed (imo remove it)
Also list each move in its own spot.

Bunch of grammar here, but that's more Gp. Just be sure to look it over in write up.
List how 252 EVs is important for other MMYs as well, as otherwise you should run just enough to outrun MMX.
Say nearly any wall, as there are probably some specialized sets, especially considering how many mon's have similar Improofing.
List mold breaker pursuit, not just mold breaker. It should be obvious, but without pursuit mold breaker is much less useful.
Mention how FF Aegislash in particular is great team support, for utility and Improofing. Imo it deserves its own spot, but I'd be fine with it just being specifically mentioned.

Magma Storm is a legitimate option, better than even Overheat IMO. It deserves at least a mention, probably a main set spot.
Mention tying MMY again

Have pivot in a different column from scouting.
Again, mention mold breaker pursuit
OO should mention magma storm if for whatever reason you don't mention it above.
OO should also include Secret Sword, No Guard, and Taunt, as well as some mention of sleep moves.

1. I'm not sure if I should even include the Sniper set as its not really that good imo. What do you think?
2. I also don't really know of that many other viable sets used on mmy currently as Moody and Protean are banned, any ideas?
Mention how FF/Levitate Steels, especially Aegislash, do a good job
Mention Chansey
Talk about shedinja, as it walls all listed, or if you include magma storm list it as hard walling for you don't choose to run it.
Talk about faster Pokemon like Maero

Do, definitally include sniper.
In my experience, choice specs tinted lens is also highly effective. A sample set would look something like volt switch/Psystrike/Moonblast/Secret Sword, with slashes for magma storm and trick in OO. You could probably also mention boosting moves for TL, but latios tends to do those better.

Right. AM QC coming through.

.
Few comments:

- Searing Shot > Blue Flare, it also was mentioned in the moves section that it could be used if accuracy isn't a concern, the only notable advantage it gains is being able to OHKO Mega Gengar at the cost of losing crucial accuracy.
- Psystrike does not benefit from SF, reveals LO, and does around the same damage to Ho-Oh compared to Steam Eruption depending on Ho-Oh's SpD investment, Steam Eruption can do anywhere from 70% to an OHKO while Psystrike does ~76-90% (might wanna calc these things before commenting), can use Focus Blast if Chansey is a concern for a 2HKO which was also mentioned (Psystrike has a small chance to 3HKO Chansey)
- We are still in the bullet points phase, not even close to GP yet so the grammar comment is irrelevant
- I mentioned "given the right moveset" so any wall is beatable, even specialized walls can go down if mmy has the correct move (4mss)
- Mold Breaker support implies both Pursuit and hazards, both of which defeat Shedinja
- Chansey isn't a check or a counter as it gets 2HKOed by both the SF (if carrying Focus Blast) and the Sniper set

Things added:

- Magma Storm
- No Guard (how did I forget this)
- Faster threats (Deo-A and Maero) in C&C
- Actually thought about it a bit more and decided to replace Steam Eruption with Diamond Storm (Psystrike still sucks) as it OHKOes Ho-Oh even with the Timid nature and also benefits from SF

Thanks for the feedback

Pardon? Blue flare ohkos Registeel/aegislash, is harder to switch into, beats MGar as you said, is the strongest (and thus most spammable) attack on the set, and just generically forces opponents to stay more healthy than they do vs searing shot.
Your only stated reason for steam eruption is Ho-Oh. Psystrike does that just as well, while also letting you not run focus blast/not risk miss and being a better move to spam. Diamond storm is a viable alternative, but I would still think that the other utility is superior.
It's not true, though. There are Chansey sets, if not the most viable ones, that can't. There are Lugia sets that can't. There are even a few like Yveltal that it can't break 1v1 due to Koff. Saying this is just inaccurate.
Not all mold breakers run hazards, so saying that is just manifestly wrong. Meanwhile, there are mold breakers like sleep deoxys speed that run neither, so I don't know where you are coming from.
Chansey does beat some sets, and has decent odds vs even the SF with Fblast due to misses. You list it if it checks any set, and it checks multiple/all depensing on the set it runs.

Also, why isn't seed flare gone, and shouldn't there be more in OO?

I honestly wouldn't like this thread to go offtopic because of an irrelevant debate, please reread what I wrote and take any further comments to PMs and let the QC members do the QCing instead. Thanks!

- Searing Shot and Blue Flare both are 2HKOs on Steel walls if they are SpDef, which is the most common. Searing Shot also has perfect accuracy (as opposed to 85% on BF), I also have mentioned BF could be used over Searing Shot so I'm not really sure what the fuss is about.
- Once again, this is a wallbreaker set so yes each move is targetted towards specific walls outside of the Fairy / Fire (or Ground) coverage. Once again please check your calcs (I know I have and I've posted them but you seem to not pay attention), Steam Eruption and Psystrike are both 2HKOs on Ho-Oh while Steam Eruption actually has a chance to OHKO if the Ho-Oh is not running max SpD while Psystrike does not do this.
- FC Chansey either runs the standard 252 Def / 252 SpD or 252 HP / 252 Def spread, both of which get 2HKOed by Focus Blast and neither get 2HKOed by Psystrike (Psystrike doesnt even 3HKO which means that Psystrike is also a dedicated move for Ho-Oh since it really doesn't hit anything else in addition to the drawbacks it already has which I have mentioned such as not benefiting from Sheer Force, revealing LO, etc). Saying that something like max SpDef Chansey walls this Mmy is true but at the same time it would make it seem that you're just trying to make an irrelevant point here since nobody, and I mean nobody, runs it (and even then it's still a shaky switchin since it has a chance of getting 2HKOed after rocks).
- There are no Yveltal spreads that wall this mmy, even max SpD (which once again, nobody runs) gets OHKOed after rocks. Sucker Punch is listed in the C&C as it can KO Mmy (even from an uninvested Yveltal probably) but being able to switch into the Mmy and wall it is a whole other story which is what we are talking about. Once again, AV Yveltal is irrelevant.
- Ice Beam has been mentioned for Lugia and once again, no Lugia spread can switch into an Ice Beam as it gets 2HKOed.
- Seed Flare (once again, as mentioned in the OP) is for Kyogre which can take the other hits. I suggest maybe reading the OP as well before commenting.
- I feel like these past few comments are repetitive as they are all a result of you seemingly not knowing what you're talking about (or not checking calcs before talking which in that case basically ends the discussion right here).

I really do not want to continue this pointless conversation as it seems like your comments are not aimed towards constructive feedback. If you have further comments about the OP please PM me about them and we could talk about it. Otherwise, let's see what the QC team thinks.

We had a talk about this in PMs and even so this person decides to pollute my analysis thread again...
So, posting here so it gets read.

Stuff that still absolutely needs to be changed:
-Chansey to checks and counters. Just about every set checks thanks to metal burst, and a few sets (Prankster, multiscale without rocks, Specdef without rocks/with rocks 78% of the time) make a decent go at countering- certainly better than anything else.
Why don't you say some of the stuff you PM'd me in terms of "Chansey counters?"

A semi comprehensive list, of all varying oh niche sets
Specialized Chanseys that switch in, in order of viability:
Prankster, Multiscale, specially defensive, Filter, Solid rock, bulletproof, Color Change, sturdy (fear)- first two are good, others do work

Chanseys that win 1v1, in order of viability:
Standard Metal Burst, Chanseys with skill swap, Mirror Coat, regenerator+parting shot, specially Defensive, Worry seed, all of the above, sets with special defense boosting, sets with spa lowering, sets with Koff, sets with conversion, drought/desoland with synthesis/moonlight/morning sun, Chanseys with disable, Chanseys with torment
2 viable, 3 somewhat viable, and several niche answers. Note that two of the most common, best sets win 1v1- and there only needs to be one for your statement to be incorrect, so even if you rightly ignore most of the possibilities your statement is still wrong

Hello
Mewtwo Mega Y
I am only going to do the first set. I do not think Sniper is good enough to have an analysis on its own. I would rate Contrary, No Guard and even Tinted before it. Do not delete its QC though, and ask other QC for their opinion. If it is kept, I can add another post to QC that portion of it.

Overview
  • "Easy to revenge kill" [especially with Espeed and other priority being so common]
  • Poor defensive typing [combined with low defense (Knock Off and Uturn hefty damage from even things like Aegi and Audino)]

Set Wallbreaker
  • I feel like this should be named SF Wallbreaker instead of just Wallbreaker but can confirm with peeps who run QC baconbagon etc

Set
  • Personally I don't think Focus Blast merits being here. Moonblast and Earth Power are the mandatory ones for me and having Focus purely for Chans which has low reliability anyway is not worth it to me. Review with future QCers on their opinions

Moves
  • Volt Switch will cost recoil
  • Energy Ball can also work for more PP more reliability (can add in OO instead if you wish)
  • Freeze Dry can be an inbetween hit on Ogre and Latios without having to choose, albeit slightly weaker to run (can add to OO instead if you wish)

Set Details
  • [G/P Related]Line on LO seems unnecessarily long; can just say "LO with SF greatly powers its moves"

Usage Tips
  • "Used in early and mid game [to unleash massive damage/punch holes into teams to make it easier to clean]"
  • Your first point is on selecting moves so points 4 and 3 should follow it imo. The 2nd and last points work together to talk about longetivity and makes the analysis flow better
  • Most expect MoonPower coverage, so it can be advantageous to keep the coverage move in question saved for a surprise attack (re: me vs IT11 etc)

Team Options
  • First and foremost should be the walls to take on revenge killing -ate users and then anything else
  • Second should be imposter proof mon
  • Any kind of sweeper can be used to clean up after Mewtwo has had its fill; Physical sweepers are helpful to take on special walls that try and spong up Mewtwo's hits
  • Since I mentioned to remove Focus, some kind of answer to remove FC chans
  • Answer for Shed in hazards or otherwise

OO
  • Contrary to brute force holes in a similar manner as SF and abuse its STAB
  • Tinted also can make better use of its limited STAB for more power
  • Here you mention Sniper

Checks and Counters
  • Special tanks including FC Chans, and maybe some Prankster and AV regen steels to a limited extent. Even Kyogre can do a decent job. Basically depends on the moveset since its checks are unfortauntely versatile enough to be decently common on many teams
  • Shedinja can be a halfway decent check to most SF Mewtwos since they can't afford to run coverage for it most of the time; mention the upkeep involved in having one and how it's not the most reliable check etc

I'd go 'Sheer Force' or 'Sheer Force Wallbreaker' for sure, as the other set is also capable of breaking bulky Pokemon with ease

Overview
  • I would say that it's "easy to revenge kill" with -ate priority because generally non-priority won't work
  • The first and last lines are repetitive with regard to its speed
Set 1
  • This is pretty cluttered tbh. I can't really see why certain things are part of the third slash and others are part of the fourth. Some suggestions to clean the whole thing up: Diamond Storm can go only in Moves and doesn't need to be slashed on the set because it's situational imo and hits a single Pokemon, separate the different slashed moves into their own bullet points, and move any other moves that you don't think are as important to OO.
  • In Usage Tips, when you say "Try to pick Mega Mewtwo Y's moves in a way that best suits your team's needs: if your team has no way of breaking a specific wall, use the corresponding coverage move on Mega Mewtwo Y to break that wall," I would also mention that Imposter proofing this set should be done in the same fashion.
  • Say specifically which -ate Extreme Speeds KO from below 60%.
  • In Team Options, provide an example of a hazard remover.
Set 2
  • In Moves, I feel it's a bit of a stretch to say that King's Shield allows you to "defeat" -ate users.
  • When you write this up, try to avoid using the exact wording for certain things that you did in Set 1.
OO
  • I feel it's worth mentioning that Parting Shot can be problematic if the opponent switches in a Magic Bouncer
  • I'm not sold on Freeze Dry. I know Flint mentioned it, but it's so unfathomably weak and doesn't get a boost from Sheer Force. I guess you can keep it but I'd give deletion some consideration.
  • If you want, you can add a mention of Mold Breaker here. It helps defeat Fur Coat and Flash Fire users, as well as Shedinja, and allows for hazard setup.
C&C
  • Does Mega Mewtwo X really use Shadow Sneak enough to make it worthy of a mention here?
  • I'd just get rid of Shedinja here, honestly. You made a big deal in the analysis of adding Shedinja counters.
