[OVERVIEW]

Gourgeist-XL is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in PU, and, thanks to a useful defensive typing, it can take on many physical threats in the tier, especially Fighting-, Ground-, Rock-, and Normal-types, such as Primeape, Carracosta and Kangaskhan. Gourgeist-XL has an excellent support movepool including Leech Seed, Foul Play, and Will-O-Wisp, which can annoy, whittle down, and cripple foes. Additionally, its Ghost typing allows it to spinblock and beat every spinner in the tier. However, Gourgeist-XL's typing leaves it weak to several common types like Dark, Fire, Flying, Ice, and Ghost. Common special attackers like Pyroar and Magmortar also hamper Gourgeist-XL and come in for free due to its poor special bulk and lack of offensive presence. Gourgeist-XL is also weak to every entry hazard, which hurts its longevity.

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Will-O-Wisp
move 2: Synthesis
move 3: Foul Play
move 4: Leech Seed
item: Colbur Berry / Leftovers
ability: Frisk
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple physical attackers like Absol and Kangaskhan; it also allows Gourgeist-XL to gain residual damage on other foes. Synthesis allows Gourgeist-XL to restore its HP when low. Leech Seed is also useful for recovering health and inflicting residual damage on foes like Gurdurr, which Gourgeist-XL doesn't want to burn, since it has access to Guts. Foul Play is mandatory for punishing setup sweepers like Zangoose and Pinsir while also hitting Magmortar hard and breaking Oricorio-G's Substitute. Seed Bomb can be run over Leech Seed to hit Grass-weak Pokemon such as Gastrodon and Lanturn.

Set Details
========

Maximum HP and Defense investment with a Bold nature is used to make Gourgeist-XL as bulky as possible, allowing it to check threats like Kangaskhan and Gurdurr more easily. Frisk allows Gourgeist-XL to scout for items on the opposing team. Colbur Berry is used for taking on physical Dark-types like Absol and Liepard better and crippling them with Will-O-Wisp. Leftovers can be used to give Gourgeist-XL passive recovery; however, without Colbur Berry, Gourgeist-XL is vulnerable to Dark-types.

Usage Tips
========

Gourgeist-XL should spread Will-O-Wisp on physical attackers like Archeops to cripple them; however, it should be wary of Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar that like to switch in on its Will-O-Wisp. Additionally, it should be careful when using Will-O-Wisp on Stoutland and Kangaskhan because they may carry Facade. When Gourgeist-XL is in safely, feel free to use Leech Seed to passively damage its foes. Make sure you scout for sets when switching Gourgeist-XL in on Water-types like Floatzel and Carracosta because they can carry Ice Beam. Gourgeist-XL is easiest to bring in on Fighting- and Ground-types such as Primeape and Torterra because it walls them with ease. Gourgiest-XL should be used to spinblock due to its Ghost typing, so bring it in on spinners like Hitmonchan. Lastly, use Synthesis when Gourgeist-XL is low on health, and be wary when switching in Gourgeist-XL on Pokemon such as Lanturn because it carries Toxic.

Team Options
========

Due to Gourgeist-XL's great physical bulk and lack of offensive presence, it's usually used on bulkier teams. Pokemon like Lanturn make good partners for being able to take Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-type attacks for Gourgeist-XL. In return, Gourgeist-XL is able to take on Fighting-, Grass-, and Ground-types such as Primeape, Shiftry, and Alolan Dugtrio that Lanturn struggles against. Skuntank also makes a good partner because it is able to absorb Toxic Spikes, remove entry hazards, and Pursuit trap Psychic- and Ghost-types for Gourgeist-XL, while Gourgeist-XL takes on Fighting- and Ground-types such as Gurdurr and Golurk for it. Regirock checks Fire- and Flying-types such as Pyroar and Archeops. Pokemon like Granbull and Silvally-Fairy that are able to take on Dark-types also pair well with Gourgeist-XL. Lastly, Audino, Type: Null, and Miltank are great teammates because they act as blanket checks to the special attackers Gourgeist-XL struggles against such as Pyroar. Audino and Miltank are also able to provide Heal Bell support to rid Gourgeist-XL of crippling status. Miltank's Thick Fat, in particular, is also useful for checking Fire- and Ice-types like Magmortar and Jynx. The aforementioned Pokemon are weak to Fighting, which Gourgeist-XL can check.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Due to Gourgeist-XL's solid bulk and access to Explosion for momentum, it can be a reliable Trick Room setter for its teammates on Trick Room teams. Toxic can be used over Leech Seed to wear down bulky walls like Audino faster. A Choice Band set with Rock Slide can be used to punish Magmortar and Oricorio-G, but it is outclassed by Gourgeist-S and isn't very useful. Rocky Helmet can also be used over Leftovers and Colbur Berry to inflict chip damage on foes like Primeape that pivot out on it. Lastly, Skill Swap and Insomnia can be useful for crippling Guts users like Gurdurr, preventing Sleep Talk, removing Lurantis's Contrary, and removing Scrappy from Kangaskhan and Stoutland. Skill Swap also allows Gourgeist-XL to remove abilities such as Magic Guard and Water Veil that protect Pokemon like Clefairy and Floatzel from Will-O-Wisp.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Special Attackers**: Strong special attackers such as Drampa and Mesprit can do massive damage to Gourgeist-XL because of its mediocre Special Defense. The latter can also switch in freely on any attack from Gourgeist-XL because of its passiveness.

**Toxic**: Toxic from Pokemon like Lanturn and Gastrodon hinder Gourgeist-XL's longevity and makes it harder to check physical foes like Primeape in the long-term.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar can come in freely on Gourgeist-XL and force it out with their strong Fire-type STAB attacks; however, they have to consistently take Stealth Rock and Foul Play damage.

**Ice-types**: Ice-types like Jynx and Abomasnow can OHKO Gourgeist-XL with their STAB attacks, and in Jynx's case it can set up on it with Nasty Plot, but it can't switch in safely.

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Weezing and Qwilfish shut down Gourgeist-XL because it is very passive and relies on its support moves to function efficiently.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types such as Swanna and Oricorio-G pose a massive threat to Gourgeist-XL, as they are able to OHKO it with a Z-Move. Archeops can also 2HKO Gourgeist-XL with Acrobatics.

**Status Absorbers**: Clefairy can take any attack from Gourgeist-XL thanks to Magic Guard and set up Stealth Rock and Calm Mind on it because of its passiveness. Type: Null can set up Swords Dance freely and PP stall Gourgeist-XL.

am check
  • change to bold nature for reduced foul play damage vs you
  • i think grass types merit their own section in checks and counters, since gourg lacks good damage output against the majority of them and many of them in return can easily use it as set up fodder or break through it. pokemon like lilligant, ferroseed, abomasnow, and ludicolo are all solid examples.
  • i'd give clefairy its own section in checks and counters, magic guard lets it counter gourg uniquely in a way that gourg can't ever touch it, while clef in return can do whatever it wants
  • fire blast in oo, as with a bold nature it has a really strong change of ohkoing abomosnow after rocks and 2hkoing ferroseed, two mons that gourg really can't touch otherwise
  • shadow sneak in oo as well, for its ability to pick off things like jynx
  • when discussing leech seed's use in usage tips, make note of obvious exceptions such as grass-types and sap sipper users like drampa and how to play around them
  • talk about partners that are good at checking the grass-types that take advantage of gourgeist like magmortar and whatnot
solid write-up so far!

  • Gourgeist-XL can annoy other teams with its unique niche in Leech Seed, Foul Play and Will-O-Wisp, which whittle and cripple opposing foes.
  • Gourgeist-XL is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in PU and, paired with a useful defensive typing, it can take on many physical threats in the tier, especially Fighting-, Ground-, Water- and Normal-types, such as Carracosta, Primeape, and Kangaskhan. (okay, I know that it technically does resist water, but most of the water types have a way of muscling around it bar Kabutops and Carracosta, maybe instead change it to rock-types?)
  • Its Ghost-typing allows it to spinblock which is useful for defensive teams (it beats every spin blocker is worth noting)
  • However, its unique typing (semi unique, we have trev) also leaves it weak to several common types like Dark-, Fire-, Flying-, Ice-, and Ghost.
  • Common Special attackers like Pyroar and Magmortar hamper Gourgeist-XL and come in for free due to its poor special bulk and lack of offensive presence
  • Gourgeist-Super is also extremely slow

Moves
========
  • Will-O-Wisp is used to cripple physical attackers like Absol, and Kangaskhan. (and allows it to gain chip on more defensive mons)
  • Synthesis allows Gourgeist to restore Hp when its low on heath
  • Leech Seed is also useful for recovering heath and doing residual damage to foes like Gurdurr (mainly because it doesn't want to burn gurdurr to get residual damage)
  • Foul Play is mandatory for punishing setup sweepers like Zangoose and Carracosta

Set Details
========
  • Maximum HP and Defense investment with an Impish nature is used to make Gourgeist-XL as bulky as possible, allowing it to check threats like Kangaskan and Gurdurr easier.
  • Frisk is the only useable ability on Gourgesit-XL because its others don't have any competitive use. Frisk allows it to scout for items on the opposing team which can be beneficial.
  • Colbur Berry is used to take on Dark-types like Skuntank and Liepard better and then cripple them with Will-O-Wisp. (providing they aren't special)
  • Leftovers can be used to give Gourgeist-XL passive recovery. (i'd stress how weak this makes you to dark-types tho and that colbur is usually preferred)
Usage Tips
========
  • Gourgeist-XL should spread Will-O-Wisp on Physical attackers like Kangaskan to cripple them. However, Gourgeist-XL should be wary of Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar that like to switch in on it freely
  • When Gourgiest-XL is in safely, feel free to use Leech Seed to cripple switch ins. (it's not crippling them at all, it's just doing passive damage to them)
  • Make sure you scout for sets when switching in Gourgeist-XL on Water-types like Floatzel and Carracosta because they can have Ice beam.
  • Bring in Gourgeist-XL on threats like Kangaskan and Primeape (you've legit mentioned kanga a million times, can you use another example?)
  • Make sure to use Sythesis when Gourgeist-XL is low on heath. You should also be wary when switching in Gourgeist-XL because Pokemon like Audino and Lanturn carry Toxic. (why would you switch it in on Audino? mention something that you're more likely to actually want to switch in on)
  • Gourgiest-XL should be used to spinblock due to its Ghost-typing, so bring it in on spinners like Hitmonchan.
  • Needs to be aware of Façade from things like Stoutland

Team Options
========
  • Due to Gourgiest-XL's great physical bulk and lack of offensive presence, its usually used on bulkier builds

  • Audino is also a good teammate for Gourgesist-XL on bulkier teams because it can provide Heal Bell support and act as a blanket check to Special Attackers such as Pyroar that beat Gourgeist-XL. Milktank and Type: Null also make good teammates for Gourgesit-XL because they check a lot of special attackers that it struggles against. Milktank's Thick Fat in particular is useful for Fire-, and Ice-types like Magmortar and Jynx. The aforementioned Pokemon are also weak to Fighting, which Gourgeist checks for them
  • Regirock is a good partner for Gourgesit-XL because it checks Fire- and Flying-types such as Pyroar and Archeops.
  • Mention ways of beating dark-types

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Seed Bomb can be ran over Leech Seed but is still weak (hits things like gastro + lanturn)
  • Due to its bulk Gourgeist can be a reliable Trick Room setter for its teammates
  • Toxic can be used over Leech Seed to wear down bulky walls like Audino faster.
  • Choice Band can be used to give Gourgeist-XL an offensive presence, however it is outclassed by Gourgeist-Small and isnt very useful.
  • Skill Swap and Insomnia can be useful because it cripples Guts users like Gurdurr, prevents SleepTalk, removes Lurantis' Contrary, removes Scrappy and allows Gourgeist-XL to hard wall Kangaskhan and Stoutland. It also remove abilities such as Magic Guard, and Water veil that protect Pokemon against Will-O-Wisp

**Ice-types**: Ice-types like Jynx and Abomasnow can OHKO Gourgeist-XL with their respective STAB attacks and setup on it with moves such as Swords Dance and Nasty Plot. (I don't like the SD point, because if it's SD it's not ohkoing with Ice Shard is it?)

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Weezing shut down Gourgeist-XL because it is very passive and relies on its support moves to function efficiently.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types such as Swanna pose a massive threat to Gourgeist-XL, as its able to OHKO it with Flyinium Z.

**Grass-types**: mention things like ludicolo, ferroseed, etc

Checks and Counters
=================== order id go for here is fire types / flying types / special attackers / ice types / toxic / taunt / status absorbers. it's ordered by level of threat, and the current order certainly isn't optimal

**Special attackers**: Strong Special attackers such as Drampa and Mesprit can do massive damage to Gourgeist-XL because of its mediocre special defense. ya u could really expand on this one, i think that should be obv

**Toxic**: Toxic hinders Gourgeist-XL's logevity and makes it harder for it to check physical foes like Primeape. what uses toxic? say more

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Pyroar and Magmortar can come in freely on Gourgeist-XL and force it out with their strong Fire STAB attacks. u could expand like how they get chipped by fp and rocks or somth

**Ice-types**: Ice-types like Jynx and Abomasnow can OHKO Gourgeist-XL with their respective STAB attacks, and is Jynx's case it can setup on it with Nasty Plot. however jynx cant rly switch in, or just something to expand on this

**Taunt**: Taunt users like Weezing and qwil, no reason not to say that here shut down Gourgeist-XL because it is very passive and relies on its support moves to function efficiently.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types such as Swanna and Oricorio-G pose a massive threat to Gourgeist-XL, as its able to OHKO it with Flyinium Z. u mention 2 mons and say it, unsure if that's gp or content issue. there's also more flying types like cheops, u could certainly say more things than u have here

**Grass-types**: Grass-types like Ferroseed, Ludicolo and Liligant wall Gourgeist-XL due to its passiveness. The latter can setup on Gourgeist-XL with moves such as Rain Dance and Quiver Dance.id delete this section, it's basically special attackers that're covered earlier and ferroseed

instead id have status absorbers, clefairy and any restock thing stall u out, even type null i think pp stalls u
3/3, checks and counters looks like what id see for a 0/3 analysis though

[OVERVIEW]

Gourgeist-XL is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in PU, (AC) and, paired with a useful defensive typing, it can take on many physical threats in the tier, especially Fighting-, Ground-, Rock-, (AC) and Normal-types, such as Carracosta, Primeape, and Kangaskhan. Gourgeist-XL has an excellent support movepool including moves such as (redundant) Leech Seed, Foul Play, (AC) and Will-O-Wisp, (AC) which can annoy, whittle down, (AC) and cripples cripple opposing (redundant) foes. Additionally, Gourgeist-XL's Ghost-(RH) typing allows it to spinblock and beat every spinner in the tier. However, Gourgeist-XL's unique (trevenant?) typing leaves it weak to several common types like Dark-(RH), Fire-(RH), Flying-(RH), Ice-(RH), and Ghost. Common special attackers like Pyroar and Magmortar also hamper Gourgeist-XL and come in for free due to its poor special bulk and lack of offensive presence. Gourgeist-XL is also weak to every entry hazard, (AC) which hurts its longevity.
